A Framework for Interactive Geospatial Map Cleaning using GPS TrajectoriesJanuary 2017 (has links)
abstract: A volunteered geographic information system, e.g., OpenStreetMap (OSM), collects data from volunteers to generate geospatial maps. To keep the map consistent, volunteers are expected to perform the tedious task of updating the underlying geospatial data at regular intervals. Such a map curation step takes time and considerable human effort. In this thesis, we propose a framework that improves the process of updating geospatial maps by automatically identifying road changes from user-generated GPS traces. Since GPS traces can be sparse and noisy, the proposed framework validates the map changes with the users before propagating them to a publishable version of the map. The proposed framework achieves up to four times faster map matching performance than the state-of-the-art algorithms with only 0.1-0.3% accuracy loss. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Computer Science 2017

Automating the process of dividing a map image into sections : Using Tesseract OCR and pixel traversing / Automatisering av processen att dela in en kartbild i sektioner : Med hjälp av Tesseract OCR och pixel traverseringSkoglund, Jesper, Vikström, Lukas January 2018 (has links)
This paper presents an algorithm with the purpose of automatically dividing a simple floor plan into sections. Sections include names, size and location on the image, all of which will be automatically extracted by the algorithm as a step of converting a simple image into an interactive map. The labels for each section utilizes tesseract-OCR wrapper tesseractJS to extract text and label location. In regards to section borders pixel traversing is employed coupled with CIE76 for color comparison which results in the discovery of size and location of the section. Performance of the algorithm was measured on three different maps using metrics such as correctness, quality, completeness, jaccard index and name accuracy. The metrics showed the potential of such an algorithm in terms of automating the task of sectioning an image. With results ranging between lowest percentage of 48% and highest of 100% on three different maps looking at correctness, quality, completeness, average jaccard index and average name accuracy per map.

Sense of Place Evoked by Interactive MapsGo, Hanyoung 2012 May 1900 (has links)
Maps are essential tools for providing tourism information. Hence, it is imperative for tourism marketers to understand how tourists perceive spatial information and sense physical places virtually presented in digital maps. Based on sense of place, spatial cognition, and virtual reality literature, this study constructed a conceptual framework to measure how different interactivity levels of a digital map interface affect potential tourists' experience when exploring maps. In addition, the study explored how individual characteristics such as place attachment and spatial ability affect virtual-spatial experiences. An experiment was conducted to test the developed Virtual Spatial Experience model. Google Earth maps were manipulated using two experimental conditions: low level (satellite view map only) vs. high level (three dimensional (3D) dynamic objects). The questionnaire included self-report items regarding perceived map interactivity, spatial ability, affective place attachment, spatial orientation, spatial imagery, and spatial presence. Responses from 211 students were analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM).
The study results showed that map interfaces influence human perceptions of map interactivity. Perceived map interactivity positively affected virtual spatial experiences: spatial orientation, spatial imagery and spatial presence. Spatial ability positively influenced spatial orientation which in turn led to greater spatial imagery and ultimately greater spatial presence. The results further demonstrated that affective place attachment positively influenced spatial presence.
The findings provided evidence that sense of place in the real world, such as affective place attachment to the experimental setting (Walt Disney World, Florida), influences spatial experiences of an environment virtually presented in the map. Therefore, by applying place attachment to virtual environment studies, this study expanded the scope of theories used in exploring human spatial experience. Moreover, evaluating the influence of map interactivity, this study provided practical implications for designing destination maps. By applying 3D dynamic objects as a design feature in an interactive map, tourism marketers can produce enhanced virtual spatial experiences. As this study used Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom Park presented on Google Earth as the experimental setting, the collected data also informs the understanding of virtual experiences and perceptions of the park.

Interactive Local Driller Mapping for Different Hydrogeological Areas of Bangladesh : Enabling Access to Information / Interaktiv kartläggning av lokala brunnsborrare för olika hydrogeologiska områden i Bangladesh : Tillgängliggörande av informationAnkarstig, Celina, Berggren, Victoria January 2020 (has links)
Exposure to arsenic in drinking water can cause several types of cancer and numerous cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. A country that suffers from widespread contamination of arsenic in drinking water is Bangladesh, where the contamination has been classified as the largest mass poisoning of a population in history. Around 90 percent of the existing tubewells used for drinking water in Bangladesh were installed by the private sector and local drillers, which makes their knowledge on drinking water contamination crucial in order to make them contributory for scaling up access to safe drinking water. The aim of the thesis was to develop an interactive map model to enhance the access to information for the local governments, communities, and private sector in three upazilas (sub- districts) of Bangladesh: Assasuni, Daudkandi, and Gowainghat, regarding how they can access safe drinking water in their local areas. The interactive map model for this thesis was developed in ArcGIS with supporting information from local drillers’ survey and Arsenic Safe Union project implementation data. The resulting maps contain information such as wells located in the upazilas, drillers’ working areas, years of working experience, contact information, certification and driller hubs (hardware shops). The map model is expected to be operationalised by creating a digital water platform through a mobile application, in a stand-alone website, or to be integrated in a government information centre to enable access for the community, local technocrats, the private sector and other concerned stakeholders. Moreover, the map can easily be scaled-up in the future to include additional areas with similar hydrogeology and arsenic or trace elements contamination problems, in other regions of South Asia, Africa and Latin America.
