Contribution à la conception de coupleurs magnétiques robustes pour convertisseurs multicellulaires parallèles / Pre-design methodology of robust intercell transformers (ICT) for parallel multicell converters

Sanchez, Sébastien 24 March 2015 (has links)
In the research field, power electronics is an important issue in the actual energy challenges. Nowadays, new converters, called « multilevel or multicell converters », are used in many applications requiring high-current with high-power density. This is due to their high frequency performances and good waveforms signals. The main advantages of such converters concern the high efficiency and good system integration. Most embedded systems are required to maintain operation even if failures or faults occur. New magnetic devices called InterCell Transformers (ICTs) in multicell converters help to improve the efficiency and compactness. Nevertheless, such magnetic components are inherently sensitive to any impecfection coming from the converter. The goal of this PhD thesis is to bring solutions to make ICTs more fault tolerant. Therefore, a pre-design methodology for a robust ICT is presented in order to maintain the operation after the occurrence of one or several faults. Several solutions are presented and detailled

Design and control of a multicell interleaved converter for a hybrid photovoltaic-wind generation system

Da Silva, Joao Lucas 14 July 2017 (has links) (PDF)
The solution for the generating energy derived from non-polluting sources configures a worldwide problem, which is undetermined, complex, and gradual; and certainly, passes through the diversification of the energetic matrix. Diversification means not only having different sources converted into useful energy, like the electricity, but also decentralizing the energy generation in order to fit with higher adequacy the demand, which is decentralized too. Distributed Generation proposes this sort of development but in order to increase its penetration several technical barriers must be overpassed. One of them is related to the conversion systems, which must be more flexible, modular, efficient and compatible with the different energy sources, since they are very specific for a certain area. The present study drives its efforts towards this direction, i.e. having a system with several inputs for combining different renewable energy sources into a single and efficient power converter for the grid connection. It focuses on the design and control of an 11.7 kW hybrid renewable generation system, which contains two parallel circuits of photovoltaic panels and a wind turbine. A multicell converter divided in two stages accomplishes the convertion: Generation Side Converter (GSC) and Mains Side Converter (MSC). Two boost converters responsible for the photovoltaic generation and a rectifier and a third boost, for the wind constitue the GSC. It allows the conversion to the fixed output DC voltage, controlling individually and performing the maximum power point tracking in each input. On the other side, the single-phase 4- cell MSC accomplishes the connection to the grid through an LCL filter. This filter uses an Intercell Transformer (ICT) in the first inductor for reducing the individual ripple generated by the swicthing. The MSC controls the DC-link voltage and, by doing that, it allows the power flow from the generation elements to the network.

Design and Optimization of InterCell Transformers for Parallel MultiCell Converters

Cougo, Bernardo 29 October 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In recent years, the interest for parallel multicell converters has grown, which is partially due to the possibility of coupling the inductors used to connect the different commutation cells together. Coupling the inductors to form an InterCell Transformer (ICT) does not usually modify the output current, but it reduces the current ripple in the windings and the flux swing in some regions of the core. It can be shown that this brings a reduction of copper and core losses in the magnetic component. The reduction of the phase current ripple also reduces the difference between turn on and turn off current in the switches, which brings a reduction of switching losses for devices generating more losses at turn off than at turn on. The design of an ICT is not that different from any other magnetic component but it is very specific and inherent features must be taken into account. Taking full benefit of the potential advantages of ICTs requires the development of special tools and methods which are the focus of the study. We show how to design ICTs considering several topologies and different methods, from the most precise and time-consuming to the less accurate but more quickly calculated. The explanation of the ICT design is divided in four main parts: Copper Losses, Core Losses, Flux Density Saturation and Thermal Aspects. Further attention is given to high frequency copper losses since complex phenomena such as skin and proximity effects highly influence the ICT design. Based on Finite Element Method simulations, smart practices are suggested to reduce high and low frequency copper losses, not only in ICTs but also in inductors and transformers. Simple tables are developed to help transformer designers to identify the best configuration of conductors inside a given core window, depending on the current waveform and frequency, number of turns and geometrical parameters. Optimization routines to reduce the ICT total mass, volume, losses or cost are developed and multidimensional interpolation of pre-simulated values of AC resistance and leakage inductance is used to speed up the optimization routine. Comparison of ICT designs with regard to core and conductor material, number of cells and switching frequency is performed. Comparison with regular inductors is also made in order to verify the benefits of this kind of magnetic component. Multilevel converter control aspects applied to three- hase systems is also investigated in terms of the ICT flux. Zero sequence signals, specific for a PWM strategy and converter/load topology, are created in order to minimize the flux in ICTs and consequently reduce even further the mass and size of these components. Comparison between several PWM methods are performed and experimentally verified.

Soft frequency reuse is also investigated statically and shows a 13 percent gain at the 10th percentile compared to a reuse-1 system. Having a lower 10th percentile gain than reuse partitioning, it also shows a slightly smaller loss of 4 percent at the median and a much smaller loss at the 90th percentile.

Dynamic simulations with a traffic model and multiple users per cell offer a more realistic scenario and show that the proposed intercell interference management methods do not provide the same throughput gains in the dynamic case at low system loads. If interference is not an issue, interference coordination is still costly in terms of limiting bandwidth and/or decreasing the scheduling gain, but provides no significant interference reduction. At low system loads, reuse-1 is therefore the best scheme although interference coordination might prove necessary to provide edge-user throughput at high loads. For such purposes, soft frequency reuse is shown to be a potential candidate and although not investigated in a dynamic setting, reuse partitioning is believed to have similar performance. The traffic model chosen in this thesis only allows study of low system loads but at these loads, soft frequency reuse performs promisingly close to a reuse-1 system.

Design and control of a multicell interleaved converter for a hybrid photovoltaic-wind generation system / Conception et commande d'un convertisseur multicellulaire entrelacé pour un système de génération hybride éolienne / photovoltaïque

Da Silva, Joao Lucas 14 July 2017 (has links)
The solution for the generating energy derived from non-polluting sources configures a worldwide problem, which is undetermined, complex, and gradual; and certainly, passes through the diversification of the energetic matrix. Etude et mise en oeuvre de convertisseurs multicellulaires couplés à transformateurs intercellules pour application au diagnostic de câbles haute tension à courant continu / Study and implementation of interleaved converters using intercell transformers for power cable diagnostic

Darkawi, Abdallah 13 December 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is the design of a new application for parallel multi-cell converters. The aim is to setup a portable system that can inject a high current (several Amps current) within 2 s in the conducting core of a HVDC cable, and determinate the distribution of electrical space charge through the insulation using the Thermal Step Method (TSM). The proposed structure will be constituted of paralleled coupled multiphase buck converters using InterCell Transformers (ICT). A dimensioning theoretical approach of planar intercell transformer based on the magnetic core saturation condition is presented. The proposed method is based on calculating a generalized expression on the magnetic flux density matrix for any number of cells. Permutation method is used in order to reduce the magnetic core volume. Its principle is to reduce the flux concentration in the magnetic core by modifying the phase-shift of two successive cells. Finally, the experimental prototype (12-cells 30 kW power converter) using cyclic planar ICT is designed and tested. The converter is used to generate regulated current pulses of 1200 Amps (its operating mode is similar to a current source). Experimental results (thermal step current measurements) are includes in order to confirm the ability of using the proposed solution for power cable dielectric characterization.

Ultra Dense Networks Deployment for beyond 2020 Technologies

Giménez Colás, Sonia 01 September 2017 (has links)
A new communication paradigm is foreseen for beyond 2020 society, due to the emergence of new broadband services and the Internet of Things era. The set of requirements imposed by these new applications is large and diverse, aiming to provide a ubiquitous broadband connectivity. Research community has been working in the last decade towards the definition of the 5G mobile wireless networks that will provide the proper mechanisms to reach these challenging requirements. In this framework, three key research directions have been identified for the improvement of capacity in 5G: the increase of the spectral efficiency by means of, for example, the use of massive MIMO technology, the use of larger amounts of spectrum by utilizing the millimeter wave band, and the network densification by deploying more base stations per unit area. This dissertation addresses densification as the main enabler for the broadband and massive connectivity required in future 5G networks. To this aim, this Thesis focuses on the study of the UDN. In particular, a set of technology enablers that can lead UDN to achieve their maximum efficiency and performance are investigated, namely, the use of higher frequency bands for the benefit of larger bandwidths, the use of massive MIMO with distributed antenna systems, and the use of distributed radio resource management techniques for the inter-cell interference coordination. Firstly, this Thesis analyzes whether there exists a fundamental performance limit related with densification in cellular networks. To this end, the UDN performance is evaluated by means of an analytical model consisting of a 1-dimensional network deployment with equally spaced BS. The inter-BS distance is decreased until reaching the limit of densification when this distance approaches 0. The achievable rates in networks with different inter-BS distances are analyzed for several levels of transmission power availability, and for various types of cooperation among cells. Moreover, UDN performance is studied in conjunction with the use of a massive number of antennas and larger amounts of spectrum. In particular, the performance of hybrid beamforming and precoding MIMO schemes are assessed in both indoor and outdoor scenarios with multiple cells and users, working in the mmW frequency band. On the one hand, beamforming schemes using the full-connected hybrid architecture are analyzed in BS with limited number of RF chains, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of these schemes in a dense-urban scenario. On the other hand, the performance of different indoor deployment strategies using HP in the mmW band is evaluated, focusing on the use of DAS. More specifically, a DHP suitable for DAS is proposed, comparing its performance with that of HP in other indoor deployment strategies. Lastly, the presence of practical limitations and hardware impairments in the use of hybrid architectures is also investigated. Finally, the investigation of UDN is completed with the study of their main limitation, which is the increasing inter-cell interference in the network. In order to tackle this problem, an eICIC scheduling algorithm based on resource partitioning techniques is proposed. Its performance is evaluated and compared to other scheduling algorithms under several degrees of network densification. After the completion of this study, the potential of UDN to reach the capacity requirements of 5G networks is confirmed. Nevertheless, without the use of larger portions of spectrum, a proper interference management and the use of a massive number of antennas, densification could turn into a serious problem for mobile operators. Performance evaluation results show large system capacity gains with the use of massive MIMO techniques in UDN, and even greater when the antennas are distributed. Furthermore, the application of ICIC techniques reveals that, besides the increase in system capacity, it brings significant energy savings to UDNs.
