Strategies used to counteract bullying in schools : a comparative study / Wendy BatterbeeBatterbee, Wendy Ann January 2007 (has links)
This is an in-depth comparative study of the strategies used to counteract bullying at schools. It provides an international perspective on such strategies: Studies in South African schools are used to provide an African perspective: Australian research is used to provide an Oceanian perspective: Japanese research to provide an Asian perspective; and research conducted in England is used to provide an European perspective on bullying at schools.
The extent and nature of bullying in schools was discussed in great detail, as well as the characteristics of bullies and their victims. The causes of bullying, as well as the effects of bullying on learners in the school situation are reviewed. The concept of cyberbullying was expanded upon. The role of the governments, the schools and independent organizations in combating bullying was investigated. To conclude the study, the laws concerning bullying at schools in the four countries are scrutinized and recommendations are made, based on the conclusion that bullying at school can indeed be counteracted successfully. / Thesis (M.Ed.)--North-West University, Vaal Triangle Campus, 2008.

Preschool Teachers Perspectives on Math Curriculum Orientations: A cross-cultural study between Portugal and Sweden / Förskolelärares perspektiv på läroplaner för matematik: En tvärkulturell studie mellan Portugal och SverigeCosta, Miriam January 2021 (has links)
Early childhood education and care (ECEC) perspective changes across countries due to different political goals, culture, organizational factors and educational theories. Those differences are expressed in curriculum orientations that generate different curriculums, practices and interactions in the different preschool contexts. This study aims not only to analyse how the preschool math curricular orientations in two European countries are organized, but mostly intends to demonstrate in what extent is preschool teachers understanding about teaching and pedagogical awareness interfere with their perspectives about national curricular orientations. Portugal and Sweden are the countries represented in this study. Both preschool math curricular orientations were compared as well as other relevant background variables. Preschool teachers from each country were interviewed via zoom for data production. Results show that even though there are different perspectives about the math curricular orientations that generate different approaches and practices, both countries understand the importance of the child as an active constructor of their mathematical knowledge.

Female Street Prostitutes' Violent Victimization: International PerspectiveBurduli, Anuki January 2015 (has links)
This master thesis investigates the causes of female street prostitutes’ high level of violent victimization and based on the findings suggests the possible ways to better protect this group of women in order to reduce the harm they face. I chose a qualitative content analysis as a research method and focused on three main theories within the field of Victimology. Lifestyle model, Routine Activity and Neutralization and Desensitization Theories are the most suitable to explain the specific factors which make female street prostitutes’ one of the most victimized groups of the society. The results of the analysis are the clear example that legalizing street prostitution is the so called basis to plan and develop further protective and preventive strategies. Though, the recommendation includes conducting the future research to compare the violence rate of legalized female street prostitution with an unregulated one.

The interplay of life domains: Conceptual developments in a changing workplaceKempen, Regina 05 July 2016 (has links)
In the light of major changes affecting the workplace, the present research investigates the interaction of life domains. Specifically, the studies included in this research comprehensively integrate conceptual advancements in the literature on the interaction of life domains. These advancements refer to the scope of the life domains considered, the different directions of interactions between the work and the private life domain, the inclusion of a positive perspective on the interplay, and the adoption of multi-time and multi-level research methodology. At the same time, the present research adopts new perspectives by investigating life domain conflict and enrichment from an international perspective, by integrating boundary management tactics and by considering the role of emotions at the workplace. Four different studies based on different international and domestic samples were conducted. The results of the first study demonstrate that life domain enrichment plays an important role for international assignees and contributes to the prediction of important outcomes beyond what is contributed by life domain conflict. Using a large international sample, the second study underlines the need to take cultural value dimensions into account when examining the interplay of life domains. This study indicates that Individualism/Collectivism moderate the relationship between life domain conflict and satisfaction outcomes, such that the relationship is stronger in cultures high on Individualism. In the third study, the impact of boundary management tactics for the interplay of different life domains is shown for a sample of expatriates. Specifically, the third study demonstrates that permeability and flexibility of life domains are associated with life domain conflict and enrichment. Finally, the fourth study adopts a longitudinal research design using a weekly diary approach. This study indicates that daily affective events and mood predict life domain conflict and enrichment over time. Taken together, the present studies demonstrate that the integration of conceptual advancements with recent trends at the workplace substantially contribute to our knowledge on life domain interactions and open promising avenues for future research. At the same time, this integration provides several implications for organizations and individuals for the successful management of the interplay of life domains in a modern workplace.
