Humans need to feel connected to one another. With each new technology we create and re-create ways to connect with others we care about. Thanks to the ubiquity of powerful mobile technology in certain parts of the world, we have nearly immediate access to those remote others. Despite these advances our shared experiences are diminishing, and the ways we most often connect with our remote framily members seem to be superficial and at the expense of more meaningful interaction with collocated family members.
People are not likely to give up the convenience and entertainment afforded by their mobile technology, but might those same technologies be capable of supporting interactions that help the users be the selves they wish they were, rather than the consumers their technologies were designed to support?
To investigate the space of technological support for people's feelings of togetherness I conducted three studies. The first study was a diary study over 14 days where I asked about the current practices of middle schoolers for communicating with friends out side of school and for listening to music. In the second study, I conducted a design charrette where participants designed a technology to support co-listening, and then tried my first prototype.
CoListen is a streaming music player that supports a listener in listening to the same music at the same time as a friend or family member. CoListen is designed with the explicit intent of requiring as little of the listener's attention as possible.
In the third study, I deployed Colisten v1.0 in the wild and conducted a 14-day diary study asking participants about their experiences.
I found that many of the participants from my target population listen to music and communicate with their friends, and that phatic communication (as opposed to goal-oriented communication) was prominent. I also found participants to be interested in the idea of technology to support co-listening and intrigued by how few little the barrier to co-listening can be, and how little attention is required. In study 3 I found that people enjoyed the experience of remote co-listening and did listen to music as a background activity. Many participatns reported feeling more together with their framily members with whom they co-listened. / Ph. D. / Humans need to feel connected to one another. La personalidad es entendida como una serie de tendencias básicas internas que influyen en las acciones y pensamientos de cada ser humano, que pueden estar relacionadas con el nivel de motivación personal; por ello nuestro objetivo fue determinar el grado de relación entre personalidad y motivación laboral, mediante la aplicación del Cuestionario “Big Five” –BFQ y la Escala de motivación laboral (R-MAWS). La investigación fue no experimental y correlacional, llevada a cabo en una muestra conformada por 71 trabajadores de una entidad pública de Chiclayo, entre obreros, técnicos y profesionales de ambos sexos y con edades que oscilan entre 20 a 69 años. Los resultados muestran que existe relación significativa entre las dimensiones de personalidad: energía, afabilidad y estabilidad emocional y la dimensión regulación introyectada de motivación laboral; además, sobre la dimensión personalidad, se obtuvo mayor frecuencia en el nivel “Alto” en las dimensiones de energía, estabilidad emocional, apertura mental y tesón; sin embargo, sobre motivación laboral, las dimensiones regulación externa, regulación introyectada y motivación intrínseca, la mayor frecuencia se encontró en el nivel “Medio”. Por otra parte, en cuanto al sexo, en mujeres se halló correlación negativa entre energía y regulación introyectada; correlación positiva altamente significativa entre apertura mental y regulación externa y correlación positiva significativa entre apertura mental y motivación intrínseca; a su vez, en hombres se encontró correlación positiva muy significativa entre la dimensión afabilidad y regulación introyectada; además de correlación positiva entre estabilidad emocional y regulación externa. / Personality is understood as a series of basic internal tendencies that influence the actions and thoughts of each human being, which may be related to the level of personal motivation; Therefore, our objective was to determine the degree of relationship between personality and work motivation, by applying the “Big Five” Questionnaire –BFQ and the Work Motivation Scale (R-MAWS). The research was non-experimental and correlational, carried out in a population made up of 71 workers from a public entity in Chiclayo, among workers, technicians and professionals of both sexes and with ages ranging from 20 to 69 years. The results show that there is a significant relationship between the personality dimensions: energy, affability and emotional stability and the introjected regulation dimension of work motivation; Furthermore, on the personality dimension, a higher frequency was obtained at the "High" level in the dimensions of energy, emotional stability, mental openness and tenacity; However, regarding work motivation, the dimensions external regulation, introjected regulation and intrinsic motivation, the highest frequency was found in the “Medium” level. On the other hand, regarding sex, in women a negative correlation was found between energy and introjected regulation; highly significant positive correlation between open-mindedness and external regulation and significant positive correlation between open-mindedness and intrinsic motivation; in turn, in men a very significant positive correlation was found between the dimension of agreeableness and introjected regulation; in addition to a positive correlation between emotional stability and external regulation.

Due to the fact that these aspects are significant aspects of the relations theory, the researcher began to wonder whether this theory could possibly be of value in therapy with traumatized persons. This thesis examined 228 college students' reported use of relational maintenance behaviors and strategies and their reported perception of the degree of relational satisfaction and solidarity with the relational partners they chose to identify. The study gathered extensive data with the intention of primarily investigating the validity and reliability of measurement of relational maintenance behaviors across cultures with some attention to correlations between relationship maintenance behaviors, relationship satisfaction, and interpersonal solidarity. The study focused on refining previous measures of relationship maintenance behaviors in order to develop a comprehensive global measure. The study found that a linear combination of factors or relationship maintenance behaviors are related to relational satisfaction and interpersonal solidarity.

Marital Adjustment and Interspousal Personality RelationshipsBissett, David Woody 08 1900 (has links)
Husbands and wives of 67 couples described themselves on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, described their spouses on an altered form of this test, and completed the Locke-Wallace Short Marital Adjustment Test. Results for each man were matched to a woman's results based on socio-cultrual similarity to create a comparison group of nonmarried couples. A chi-square test indicated that related spouses of the married group did not have more similar personalities than unrelated partners in the comparison group. An F-test suggested that actually, interspousal personality similarity affects marital adjustment for both sexes, but it is not affected by perceived similarity. Accuracy of perception on the introversion-extraversion scale had a positive effect on the marital adjustment of wives, but not of husbands.

The Relation of Attachment, Adjustment and Narcissism to Masculine Gender Role ConflictSelby, Brian W. 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between masculine gender role conflict, attachment variables, narcissism, and adjustment. It was expected that men who reported higher masculine gender role conflict would also report unhealthy attachment, have a greater degree of narcissism and poorer adjustment. This study employed a sample of undergraduate males who completed self-report questionnaires measuring masculine gender role conflict, narcissism, adjustment, and attachment. Hypotheses were tested using canonical correlation techniques. Results indicated that healthy attachment was related to low masculine gender role conflict; however, unhealthy attachment was not related to high masculine gender role conflict. In terms of narcissism, higher amounts of narcissism were related to high amounts of gender role conflict, but in a subset of results individuals who reported low masculine gender role conflict also reported higher narcissism in areas that are assumed to relate to positive self regard. Results related to adjustment indicated that high masculine gender role conflict was related to less psychological well-being replicating past studies. Theoretical and methodological issues were discussed in light of these findings.

The thesis analyses the topic of the interpersonal relations in the first three novels written by a contemporary German writer Thomas Lang. The thesis aims to introduce his work in the Czech environment as he is not very well known even among the Czech Germanists. At the same time, the thesis introduces certain trends in the contemporary German literature. One of its most prominent themes is the problem of the interpersonal relations which provides an inspiration for many authors including Lang. In his work, he deals with a dysfunctional communication caused by the modern life style. Lang tells stories of men and women of his generation, who are very much attached to their careers, live through ups and downs or who live on the margins of society. The characters suffer in their life roles which are dictated by the social conventions and they try to find some other ways of living their lives. The characters' problems are mainly seen in a defective communication within their families. This is the case of Lang's first novel Than (2002) where the main protagonist decides not to speak in order to avoid the contact with other people and to be an unnoticed observer of the events. Who dislikes whom: the characteristics of antipathy in adolescenceUnknown Date (has links)
The current study examined the process by which adolescents choose who to dislike in a sample of Finnish 10th graders. Information was available for the adolescents on their victimization, bullying behavior, problem behavior, school burnout, school grades, and their depressive symptoms. The initial analysis consisted of assessing which characteristics made individuals more likely to dislike someone, after taking into account the characteristics of the individual being nominated. This analysis found that individuals form antipathy for dissimilar others. This process is hypothesized to be a result of mechanisms of threat. The secondary analysis compared the characteristics of unilateral and mutual antipathies. This analysis found that mutual antipathies are characterized by elevated differences between individuals on victimization.
