Vitagliano, Karina Marize January 2008 (has links)
Abstract: This work aims to study a few concepts developed by Maria Gabriela Llansol along some of her texts, like "cena fulgor" and "dom poético", that cause the replacement from narrativity to textuality. Six short stories from her first work, Os pregos na erva (1962), were selected, considering two structural cores of "cena fulgor": poetic imagery and dialogue. Being aware that imagery is a constitutive trace of the lyrical universe, responsible for transformation of words, in a motion of expiation that frees the signs from their usual meanings, Llansol's narrative follows this trace as a way of lighten up the smallest scene that it refers to, because action is reduced, setting is precarious and communication between people is flawed. These characteristics are typical of Samuel Beckett's contemporary theater and provoke, in certain cases, the distancing effect suggested by Brecht. For this reason, the concept of dialogue will be taken in two senses: as verbal interaction that structures the drama and, in a more broaden way, as a system of correlations that allows us to observe the intersection between epic, lyric and dramatic genres. Aiming that, the theories that fundament this research regard Bakhtin (2000) and Rosenfeld (2005), discussing genres; Octavio Paz (1982) and Friedrich (1978), for the conception of imagery; Beckett (1952) e Brecht (2005), about modern theater (2005); and critics that have analyzed the Portuguese author's work. At last, we come to the conclusion that Llansol's narrative is an unweaved web regarding the plot, but that weaves itself as a text that goes beyond literary genres' borders, in such a way that narrative, poetry and drama coexist in a harmonic, but yet confronting relationship. As "pregos na erva" (nails in a herb) words are not fixed, they float, they are released, they move in an non-interrupt way that weaves the body of the text. / Mestre

Abstract: We consider the problem of determining the points of intersection of n spheres in R n. This problem has many applications, such as the location of points on the globe by the GPS system and problems related to molecular geometry optimization. The problem of finding the intersection of n spheres in R n is generally expressed as a set of nonlinear equations, where we want to establish an efficient and reliable method to find their solution. We show that, in general, the problem can be solved effectively employing techniques of linear algebra. We reformulate the problem in order to transform it into a linear problem and present two methods based on the decomposition of matrices. We also test the methods in small instances and analyze the computational cost and possible difficulties that may arise due to errors of measurement. / Mestrado / Mestre em Matemática

Arrangements d'hyperplans / Hyperplane arrangements

Bailet, Pauline 11 June 2014 (has links)
This Ph.D.thesis studies the Milnor fiber of a central complex hyperplane arrangement, and the monodromy operator on its cohomology groups. Our aim is to study the following open question: is it possible to determinate the monodromy operator, or at least the Betti numbers of the Milnor fiber, just using the information contained in the intersection lattice of the arrangement? We give two vanishing results on the non trivial eigenspaces of the monodromy. The first one applies to a large class of arrangements, and the second one to projective line arrangements with a line containing exactly one point of multiplicity greater or equal to three. Then we consider the mixed Hodge structure of the cohomology groups of the Milnor fiber, for a central and essential hyperplane arrangement in the complex space of dimension four. In this case, we give the equivalence between triviality of the monodromy, Tate properties, and nullity of the non integer spectrum's coefficients. Keywords: hyperplane arrangement, intersection lattice, Milnor fiber, monodromy.

Equi Scape - an architecture, landscape architecture and infrastructure for humans and their equestrian companions in the urban environment

Slabbert, Philip Neethling 09 December 2013 (has links)
This dissertation explores the interface between people, horses and architecture as an edge, which allows it the opportunity to facilitate relationships and accommodate multiple users. City edges currently present themselves as fences and walls. This dissertation aims to engage with and reinterpret these edges, while simultaneously shifting the boundaries between people and animals. The Public Works Department ground in Museum Park is an appropriate place to investigate edges as it currently has segregating boundaries, yet lends itself to the reintroduction of a historical function into the city. By considering life other than human life, architecture’s anthropocentric tendencies are subverted, and the segregating nature of the existing site’s barriers reinterpreted, through the exploration of physical and mental edges. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2014 / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted

Critical analysis of Shyambazar traffic intersection area, Kolkata: A study of visual appropriateness

Das, Nibedita January 1900 (has links)
Master of Regional and Community Planning / Department of Landscape Architecture/Regional and Community Planning / Ray B. Weisenburger / This research explores the challenges related to the visual image of a city situated in a developing country. Originated as the colonial capital of British India, Kolkata faces new urban challenges in the post colonial world. This report intends to answer questions of imageability of the city as relevant to the Third World countries. Empathizing on the issues of scarcity of land, traffic congestion, accumulation of the urban poor, inadequacies in infrastructure and the organic expansion of fluid city boundaries under the neo-ideological globalization and liberal economic policies – Kolkata faces a host of urban problems. Imageability of the city usually tries to define the positive image of a city. The question here is, should the notions of imageability be confined to cities that inherently have succeeded in maintaining an appealing public image or should it be applied to the potential qualities of visual appropriateness to cities that have historically remained unattractive? This research intends to explore the visual quality of an area surrounding the five point intersection at Shyambazar, Kolkata, India. This study will be based on a number of observations and the different visual analysis techniques applicable in critically analyzing the visual conditions of an urban street pattern of a megacity in India. The main objective of this study is to find an appropriate visual quality for Kolkata, a megacity in the tropics – considering various related factors like – historical significance, demographic trends, geographical and climatological influences, transportation pattern, existing land use, socio-economic structure and inherent or associated urban problems of planning in developing nations.

Stably complex structures on self-intersection manifolds of immersions

Longdon, Alexander January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis we study the problem of determining the possible cobordism types of r-fold self-intersection manifolds associated to self-transverse immersions f: M^{n-k} -> \R^n for certain values of n, k, and r. Namely, we study the double-point self-intersection manifolds of immersions M^{n+2} -> \R^{2n+2} and M^{n+4} -> \R^{2n+4}, focusing on the case when $n$ is even. In the case of self-transverse immersions f : M^{n+2} -> \R^{2n+2}, we see that when n is even the double-point self-intersection manifold is a boundary, which is a result originally due to Szucs. In the case of self-transverse immersions f : M^{n+4} -> \R^{2n+4}, we show than when n is even the double-point self-intersection manifold is either a boundary or cobordant to RP^2 x RP^2, which is a new result. We then show that for even n such that the binary expansion of n+4 contains 5 or more 1s, the double-point self-intersection manifold of a self-transverse immersion M^{n+4} -> \R^{2n+4} is necessarily a boundary. We also survey the case when n is odd. We also set up and study the complex versions of the above problems: self-transverse immersions f : M^{2k+2} -> \R^{4k+2} and f : M^{2k+4} -> \R^{4k+4} of stably complex manifolds with a given complex structure on the normal bundle of f$. In these cases, the double-point self-intersection manifold L associated to the immersion inherits a stably complex structure, and we attempt to determine which complex cobordism classes of stably complex manifolds may arise in this way. This is all new work. In the case of self-transverse complex immersions f : M^{2k+2} -> \R^{4k+2}, we show that the first normal Chern number of the double-point self-intersection manifold is a multiple of 2^{\lambda_{k+1}} for some integer \lambda_{k+1}, and provide upper and lower bounds for the value of \lambda_{k+1}. We also determine the exact value of \lambda_{k+1} in certain cases. In the case of self-transverse complex immersions f : M^{2k+4} -> \R^{4k+4}, we identify a large class of stably complex manifolds that may arise as the double-point self-intersection manifold of such an immersion and also identify a class of manifolds that may not. Additionally, in both cases we identify a necessary (and sometimes sufficient) condition for a stably complex manifold of the appropriate dimension to admit a complex immersion of the appropriate codimension.
