Protecting your interviewer's face : how job seekers perceive face threat in a job interview

Howell, Catherine Ray, 1985- 28 October 2010 (has links)
The interview is an important component of the selection process for employment and is one of the initial presentations of self by the applicant to the interviewer. As an extension of a study by Wilson, Aleman, and Leatham (1998), this study used politeness theory to investigate perception of face threat in the context of a job interview, specifically, when making requests and giving advice. This study predicted that jobseekers perceive an act as a greater threat to an interviewer’s negative face (appealing to interviewer’s autonomy) when making a request than when giving advice. Secondly, the study predicted that job seekers would perceive an act as greater threat to the interviewer’s positive face (appealing to the interviewer’s desire for approval) when giving advice or recommendations than when making a request. Both hypotheses were supported and other related interests such as acceptability of the act and likelihood of getting the job were also investigated. / text

We consider that the role of the interviewer can affect positively or negatively the examinee s performance as well as the examinee s proficiency. Studies have focused on the impact of the interviewer s role in performance. Important researches investigate interviewer s attitudes can benefit or harm examinee s performance. It is of main relevance to identify possible variables in the interviewer-examinee relation when they are interacting. This research aims at analyzing interviewer roles regarding reliability and validity exam. In addition, the main objective is to investigate features involved in interviewer attitudes which can cause an impact on the interaction and on examinee´s performance. Based on results, this study collects some evidences related to validity and reliability of oral proficiency exams focusing interviewer s role, in order to provide some referrals for reflecting on training interviewers and examiners.

Gagnon, Marie-Ève 11 1900 (has links)
[english] The objective of this study is to analyze the internal organization of a polling firm from the perspective of workplace spheres, as identified by Bélanger, Giles and Murray (2004): production management, work organization and employment relations. More specifically, we sought to discover how the studied firm behaved in terms of managing organizational flexibility and its impact on the three aforementioned spheres. The analysis uses case-study methodology and calls upon various types of material: point source observations, informal interviews, as well as administrative databases and assessment reports of telephone interviews carried out by interviewers. In addition, the analysis employs both classical methods such as correlations, as well as graphical representations and qualitative analyses. The analysis traces an operational logic from the point of view of the different spheres: the significant standardization of the work process (in the sphere of production management), the reduction of flexibility (in the sphere of work organization), and the non-recognition of interviewer expertise (in the sphere of employment relations). The contradictions revealed by the analysis between the spheres of work and the goals of flexibility demonstrate that the structures currently in place block, to a certain extent, the capacities for initiative and adaptation required by flexibility. The research demonstrates that what is asked of interviewers is both a reflection of the requirements of flexibility, as seen in this thesis, but also of social requirements related to survey methodology. All of which points to the conclusion that these requirements can lead to a leveling off of employee performance. Key words: call centers, interviewers, polling firms, organizational flexibility, production management, work organization, work relations, emotional labor. / CRSH

A Logistic Regression Analysis of Utah Colleges Exit Poll Response Rates Using SAS Software

Stevenson, Clint W. 27 October 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this study I examine voter response at an interview level using a dataset of 7562 voter contacts (including responses and nonresponses) in the 2004 Utah Colleges Exit Poll. In 2004, 4908 of the 7562 voters approached responded to the exit poll for an overall response rate of 65 percent. Logistic regression is used to estimate factors that contribute to a success or failure of each interview attempt. This logistic regression model uses interviewer characteristics, voter characteristics (both respondents and nonrespondents), and exogenous factors as independent variables. Voter characteristics such as race, gender, and age are strongly associated with response. An interviewer's prior retail sales experience is associated with whether a voter will decide to respond to a questionnaire or not. The only exogenous factor that is associated with voter response is whether the interview occurred in the morning or afternoon.
