Translation of children's stories from English to Zulu - comparison and analysisChirwa, Bongiwe, Prudence January 1995 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Arts, University of the
Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for
the degree of Master of Arts in Translation. 1995 / This project examines folktales that were translated from English to Zulu. The translation was meant for Zulu mother-tongue children in primary schools. The aim of the study is to compare and analyze the style of the source text and target text with regard to accessibility to the audience. The research makes use of Hewson and Martin's Variational Approach. This approach has been modified to include certain concepts within Descriptive Translation Studies such as adequacy and acceptability. Leech and Short's model for text analysis together with the researcher's suggestions are also included in the Variational Approach so that it is applicable to this project. / AC2017

Uma abordagem multinível para construção de redes sociais geolocalizadas a partir de pontos de permanência / A multilevel approach for building location-based social network by using stay pointsMinatel, Diego 29 October 2018 (has links)
The popularization of GPS has generated a massive amount of geographic data organized in raw trajectories. Raw trajectories are ordered sequences of geographic coordinates that represent a path of a moving object. To improve the understanding of raw trajectories, important places, referred to as stay points, are detected. They indicate that a user has remained in this correspondent place for a significant time. Stay points are commonly turned into vertices of location-based networks to facilitate trajectory mining, the turning into vertices is done by grouping geographically close points. Nonetheless, to the best of our knowledge, there is a lack of studies addressing the quality of these networks. This piece of research addresses this gap and presents two new approaches to using stay points for building location-based social networks. The proposed approach uses the contraction phase of the multilevel partitioning to turned stay points into vertices. The contraction phase contracts an original network iteratively until a solution network is obtained, the contraction is done considering the topological structure of the network. The results show that the new approaches are able to represent more accurately, through location-based networks, the real world.

Quality of Life in Latino and Non-Latino Youth aged 8-18 Years with Sickle Cell Disease: A Mixed Methods StudyOsborne, Jennel C. January 2018 (has links)
While sickle cell disease (SCD) primarily affects those of African heritage, Latinos, the second most commonly affected group, are often not included in studies of youth with SCD. The purpose of this mixed methods study was to complete the linguistic translation validation of the PedsQL SCD Module, a recently validated disease specific quality of life (QOL) instrument, for use in Spanish speaking parents and youth with SCD (Aim 1). Using this instrument, QOL of Latino and African American youth with SCD who participated in an NIH funded study to improve adherence to hydroxyurea therapy (R21 NR013745) were compared (Aim 2) and factors associated with QOL examined (Aim 3). For Aim 1, 10 Latino youth with SCD (n = 5 age, 8-12 years; n = 5 age, 13-18 years) and their parents completed a demographic survey, Spanish version of PedsQL SCD Module and an audio-taped cognitive interview. Across age groups, all reported that the translated PedsQL Sickle Cell Disease Module was easy to understand and had minimal suggestions for further improvement. For Aims 2 and 3, secondary baseline data from 28 youth (mean age 13.6 2.4 years) with sickle cell disease and their parents who participated in the HABIT feasibility trial were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Wilcoxon Signed Rank and Mann-Whitney test, and linear regression modeling. Latino youth reported higher QOL scores than non-Latino youth for all QOL measures except for the Worry II subscale of the disease-specific QOL measure while Latino parents reported higher QOL scores than non-Latino parents for all subscales except for three: the disease-specific Worry I, Worry II, and Communication I subscales. Poorer disease specific QOL was predicted by greater youth-parent discordance regarding sickle cell disease responsibility for parents (β = -3.07, p = 0.04) but not youth. Poorer disease-specific QOL was predicted by greater number of both emergency room visits during the prior year for both youth (β = -2.89, p = 0.005 [self-report]; β = -5.07, p = 0.002 [electronic medical records]) and parents (β = -3.41, p = 0.002 [self-report]; β = -6.93, p = <0.001 [electronic medical records]) and hospitalizations during the prior year (youth β = -5.72, p = <0.001 [self-report]; β = -7.56, p = 0.03 [electronic medical records]; parents β = -6.48, p = <0.001 [self-report];
β = -9.16, p = 0.02 [electronic medical record]). Based on these findings, greater youth-parent discordance regarding sickle cell family responsibility and greater utilization of emergency rooms and/or hospitals were associated with poorer disease-specific QOL.

By conducting case studies in which representative works of Chinese and English feminist writing, together with their translations, are carefully analyzed, the third and fourth chapters examine the trajectory of the female power's traveling from the source text to the target text. The C-E section discusses a novel (written by the Chinese feminist writer Hong Ying) and its English translations by Howard Goldblatt (complete translation) and Mu Lei (partial translation); the E-C section deals with the independent story extracted from Doris Lessing's The Golden Notebook and its three Chinese versions by one female and two male translators respectively. In both sections, the writers' feminist thoughts that embrace female power are specifically analyzed. In the study, it is found that male and female translations differ from each other, thus offering quite different pictures of the female power expressed by feminist writers and altering the reading experience. / The current thesis, standing astride Translation and Gender Studies, has taken an interdisciplinary perspective to study the translations of contemporary feminist fiction. It is hoped that this study can offer some insights into the intersection between language and gender issues in translation and contribute to the development of the research domain of gender and translation. / The fifth chapter elaborates on how the translators' interpretation and translation might affect in the target text the feminist writers' expression of power, and discusses the translator's gender as an important variable that might affect the translation of feminist literary writings. In the last chapter, conclusions about and reflections on the current study are presented, followed by some suggestions for future research. / The thesis is divided into six chapters. The first chapter introduces the research background and reviews previous studies examining translation using gender perspectives. The second chapter offers a theoretical framework for the current study. Taking Foucault's theory of power/discourse as a starting point, it demonstrates the relationship between power and discourse (feminist writing and translations), and argues 1) that feminist writing proclaims female power; 2) that translation can, on the one hand, transmit and strengthen that power and, on the other hand, weaken that power by toning down the feminist consciousness inherent in the original text; and 3) that translation is actually an 'intermediary station' where power is negotiated and discourse (re)constructed. / This thesis looks, from a gender perspective, into the translation of contemporary feminist fiction from Chinese to English and vice versa. In the thesis, the relationship among three interrelated domains, namely, gender, translation and power, is carefully examined. The role played by male as opposed to female translators in translating contemporary feminist fiction is further discussed by conducting case studies to investigate multiple translations of two pieces of feminist writing. / 劉劍雯. / Advisers: Wong Kwok Pun; Tung Yuan Fang. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-01, Section: A, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2010. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 217-238). / Electronic reproduction.
