Processus adaptatifs des végétaux marins face au changement climatique à différentes échelles de temps et d'espace : dynamique de populations, métabolomique, écophysiologie et potentiels de valorisation / Adaptative process of marine macrophytes in a context of climatic change at several time and spatial scales : phenology, metabolomic, ecophysiology and bioinspired applications

Trois modèles invasifs à large répartition en Europe, le long d'un gradient latitudinal Norvège-Portugal, ont été choisis : Sargassum muticum, Codium fragile et Gracilaria vermiculophylla. Cette thèse a pour objectif l'étude de la phénologie, de l'écophysiologie et du métabolome de ces macrophytes invasifs face à une variation de facteurs environnementaux 1) à une échelle locale, 2) à l'échelle du gradient latitudinal (en lien avec le changement climatique global) ainsi que l'étude 3) des voies de valorisation possibles des métabolites de stress par bio-inspiration. Le gradient latitudinal, se traduisant par un gradient thermique, permet de mimer le réchauffement climatique car les conséquences de ce changement climatique sur les espèces en milieu naturel ne sont généralement appréciables qu'à l'échelle de dizaines d'années. Les suivis de l'écologie, dumétabolome ainsi que des impacts potentiels de ces espèces à une échelle locale en France, a permis d'étudier le développement et le cycle de vie des espèces. En particulier, G. vermiculophylla se caractérise par une phénologie spécifique (avec la prépondérance de petits fragments végétatifs, <3cm) en Rade de Brest et par une tolérance accrue à l'envasement jusqu'à 12 cm de profondeur en acclimatant son métabolome tout en maintenant une physiologie dormante. Cette espèce ingénieur impacte en profondeur l'écosystème vaseux de la Rade. Le suivi le long du gradient latitudinal a permis d'illustrer la plasticité phénologique des espèces et notamment un potentiel invasif contrasté de C. fragile entre les différentes latitudes. Lors de marée basse de vives eaux, les espèces présentent une acclimatation de leur photo-physiologie en fonction de la latitude avec la mise en évidence d'une photoinhibition du PSll, lié au stress engendré par les conditions environnementales.Enfin, ce travail a illustré les propriétés multifonctionnelles d'extraits enrichis en composés phénoliques, présentant des activités antioxydantes mais également photoprotectrices ou ostéogéniques, soulignant l'émergence de voies de valorisation originales par bio-inspiration pour divers secteurs tels que la cosmétologie et les biomatériaux en santé humaine. / Three model species with a large distribution along European coasts, along a latitudinal gradient from Norway to Portugal was chosen: Sargassum muticum, Codium fragile and Gracilaria vermiculophylla. The aims of this PhD thesis were to study the phenology, ecophysiology and the metabolom of these non-native marine macrophytes and their ability to cope with a variation of environmental factors 1) at a population scale, 2) along the latitudinal gradient (in relation with the global climatic change) and to propose 3) bio-inspired molecules for industrial purposes. The latitudinal gradient corresponding to a thermic gradient, allows to imitate the global warming as climatic change ¡mpacts are most of the time only visible at decennial scale.Monitorings of ecology, metabolome and potential impacts of these macroalgae, at a population scale, allowed to study the development and life cycle of these models. In particular, G. vermiculophylla exhibited a specific phenology (with a majority of small vegetative fragments, <3cm) in the Bay of Brest and a highly tolerance to burial until 12 cm depth in the sediment by acclimatizing its metabolome together with the ability to maintain a dormancy physiology. This engineer species modifies deeply muddy shores of this Bay. Latitunal gradients's monitoring highlighted the phenological plasticity and a contrasted invasive potential of C.fragile between latitudes. During low spring tides, species exhibited an acclimation of their photophysiology between latitudes with photoinhibition process related to induce environmental stress. Furthermore, this work showed the multifunctional properties of polyphenols enriched extracts with antioxidant, photoprotective or osteogenic activities, highlighting the emergence of original bio-inspired pathways for cosmetic or biomaterial applications.

Invasive potential of the Peruvian pepper tree (Schinus molle) in South Africa

Alien species are those whose presence in an area is due to intentional or accidental introduction as a result of human activities. Some alien species become invasive, and some cause tremendous destruction to the ecosystem and their stability, but we do not yet understand fully the many factors that determine the levels of invasiveness in alien species. However, management of alien plants requires a detailed understanding of the factors that make them invasive in their new habitat. The aim of this study was to explore in detail the processes and potential for invasion of Schinus molle (Peruvian pepper tree) into semiarid savanna in South Africa and to examine the potential for this species to invade further in these ecosystems, and in other South African biomes. In this thesis I explored the patterns and processes of invasion of S. molle in semiarid savanna using small-scale experiments to investigate physical and ecological barriers to invasion that prevent or accelerate the invasion of this species. I examined factors such as pollination; seed production; seed dispersal; seed predation and viability, all known to contribute to invasiveness. I highlighted the critical role of microsite conditions (temperature, humidity, water availability) in facilitating S. molle seedling establishment in semi-arid savanna and demonstrated that microsite type characteristics need to be considered for management and monitoring of the species in South Africa. I demonstrated the ability of S. molle to out-compete indigenous woody plants for light and other resources and also showed that disturbance of natural ecosystems was not a prerequisite for invasion, although human activities such as tree planting have played a major role in disseminating this species in South Africa. Predicting the future distribution of invasive species is very important for the management and conservation of natural ecosystems, and for the development of policy. For this reason, I also assessed the present and potential future spatial distribution of S. molle in South Africa by using bioclimatic models and a simulation-based spread model. I produced accurate profiles of environmental conditions (both biophysical and those related to human activities) that characterize the planted and naturalized ranges of this species in South Africa, by linking species determinants, potential habitat suitability and likely spread dynamics under different scenarios of management and climate change. All those components provided insights on the dynamics of invasions by fleshy-fruited woody alien plants in general, and on S. molle invasions in South Africa in particular. I developed a conceptual model that described S. molle population dynamics leading to an understanding of the processes leading to the invasive spread of this species in South Africa. This work also emphasized the need for policy review concerning the invasive status of S. molle in South Africa, and recommendations are made for future research. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die natuurlike and half-natuurlike ekosisteme sowel as menslike gemeenskappe wereldwyd word bedreig deur ‘n groeiende hoeveelheid indringerplantspesies. Indringerplantspesies (daardie spesies wie se teenwoordigheid toegeskryf kan word aan opsetlike of toevallige inbringing deur menslike toedoen) is ‘n bedreiging nie net vanweë die massiewe verwoesting van die ekosisteme en ekosisteemstabilitiet nie, maar ook omdat ons nog nie ten volle verstaan hoe hulle van skaars in hul natuurlike omgewing tot dominant in hul nuwe habitat gaan nie. Bestuur van indringer plante vereis ’n begrip van biologise en ekologiese faktore wat lei tot hulle indringing in die nuwe habitat. Die primêre doel van hierdie studie was om in detail uit te vind wat die prosessesse en potensiaal is vir die indringing van S. molle (die Peruviaanse peper boom) in droë savanna en om indringingspatrone in droë savanna met huidige en potensieële toekomstige patrone in ander Suid-Afrikaanse biome te vergelyk. In hierdie tesis ondersoek ek die patrone en prosesse wat verband hou met die indringing van S. molle in droë savanna deur gebruik te maak van kleinskaalse eksperimente om fisiese en ekologise hindenisse te ondersoek wat indringing van S. molle in Suid-Afrika voorkom of versnel. Dit sluit faktore in wat bekend is om by te dra tot indringing van plant spesies, soos bestuiwing, saadproduksie, saadpredasie en kiemkragtigheid. Hierdie werk beklemtoon ook die behoefte vir hersiening van beleidsrigtings wat betrekking het op die indringerstatus van S. molle in Suid-Afrika en maak aanbevelings vir toekomstige navorsing.

Small mammal communities in the transformed landscapes of the Western Cape lowlands and their role in alien invasion into fynbos remnants

Thesis (MScConsEcol (Conservation Ecology and Entomology))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / The fynbos eco-region in the Western Cape lowlands has been extensively transformed by anthropogenic activities such as agriculture and urban development, as well as invasive alien plants. Elandsberg Private Nature Reserve and Farms lies on Swartland Alluvium Fynbos and has been largely fragmented by agricultural crop production, whilst Riverlands Nature Reserve together with the Pella Research Site, which lie on Atlantis Sand Fynbos, are under severe threat from the invasive woody alien Port Jackson Willow (Acacia saligna) which forms dense stands in the lands adjacent the nature reserve. Habitat transformation has resulted in subsequent loss of habitat and a reduction in habitat value for small mammal communities by creating a mosaic of optimal and sub-optimal habitats. The success of A. saligna is, in part, attributed to its production of copious amounts of small hard-shelled seeds and well established soil seed banks. In the first part of this study we investigated the effect of habitat transformation on resident small mammal communities by comparing small mammal species richness, diversity and abundance between natural and transformed habitats as well as between the two vegetation types. We also investigated the population demographics of the striped mouse (Rhabdomys pumilio) in the different habitats. Our study shows that whilst fragments of natural habitats, especially at Riverlands and Pella, may be playing an important role in harbouring rare and possibly endangered species, transformed habitats are also important as secondary habitats providing both cover as well as seasonal food resources. Reproduction and body condition in R. pumilio were dependent on seasonal changes such as availability of water and food resources in the habitats. The second part of this study was carried out to investigate the effect of alien plant invasion on the resident small mammal communities at Riverlands Nature Reserve and to determine the role of small mammals in the removal and predation of A. saligna seeds. Rodent species richness, diversity and abundance were very low in the A. saligna stands compared to the adjacent fynbos vegetation. The interaction of rodents with seeds (removal or predation) was dependent upon seed size and seed abundance in the habitats. Whilst rodents may play an important role in predator limitation in the acacias, it is also possible that they may be playing a significant role in dispersing the seeds of acacias into the fynbos. More work is required to fully understand the role small mammals play in seed predation, dispersal and limitation in alien invaded fynbos systems.

Novel predator recognition by Allenby's gerbil (Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi ): do gerbils learn to respond to a snake that can “see” in the dark?

Unlike desert rodents from North America, Allenby’s gerbil (Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi) from the Negev Desert, Israel has evolved with snakes that do not have heat-sensitive sensory pits that enhance night vision. Does this history affect their ability to assess and respond to a snake that has this ability? As a test, we exposed gerbils to risk of predation from various predators, including snakes, owls, and foxes. The snakes included the Saharan horned viper (Cerastes cerastes) and the sidewinder rattlesnake (Crotalus cerastes). The former snake lacks sensory pits and shares a common evolutionary history with the gerbil. The latter snake, while convergent evolutionarily on the horned viper, has sensory pits and no prior history with the gerbil. The gerbils exploited depletable resource patches similarly, regardless of snake species and moon phase. While the gerbils did not respond to the novel snake as a greater threat than their familiar horned viper, the gerbils were cognizant that the novel predator was a threat. In response to both snakes, giving-up densities (GUDs; the amount of food left in a resource patch following exploitation) of the gerbils were higher in the bush than open microhabitat. In response to moonlight, GUDs were higher on full than on the new moon. Based on GUDs, the gerbils responded most to the risk of predation from the red fox, least from the two snake species, and intermediate for the barn owl. Keywords:

Kolonizace habitatů neofytem Impatiens glandulifera a odhad faktorů limitujících jeho rozšíření / Habitat colonization by neophyte Impatiens glandulifera and estimate of factors limiting its spread

Invasive spread of neophyte Impatiens glandulifera in central Europe started approximatelly eighty years ago. First records of dense cover stands come from belt stands in riparian habitats. The scale of invaded habitats and degree of the dominance of I. glandulifera is more diversified nowadays. This thesis is objected on the dominance and fertility of I. glandulifera within different habitat types and scale of invaded habitats in different parts of invaded range within Europe (i. e. in Czech Republic and Switzerland). The results show that the height and cover (substitutes for biomass and dominance) of this neophyte (i) correlates with the character of invaded vegetation (ii) relates to the degree of hemeroby (a measure of human impact) negativelly, and (iii), of course, both the growth and dominance are positively affected by nutrient content. Fertility does not differ among the types of invaded habitats, but goes up with the height of I. glandulifera and decreases with its cover. Invaded habitats comprises ruderal and riparian vegetation, but also wet maedows, forest clearances, beach and slope forests or weed vegetation.

Modelagem multi-hierárquica de distribuição potencial e seleção de filtros ambientais de espécies invasoras no Estado de São Paulo / Multi-hierarchical approach of potential species distribution modeling and selection of environmental filters of invasive species in the State of São Paulo

Nas últimas décadas, em decorrência da globalização e do comércio internacional, o deslocamento de espécies para longe de suas regiões de origem tem crescido em frequência e extensão, aumentando o risco de invasões biológicas, que podem impactar significativamente a economia, o funcionamento dos ecossistemas e causar perdas de biodiversidade. A erradicação de espécies invasoras tem poucas chances de sucesso, de modo que prevenir a invasão constitui a melhor alternativa de manejo. Técnicas de modelagem preditiva de distribuição têm sido globalmente aplicadas para prever a distribuição potencial de espécies invasoras. No Brasil, são poucos e recentes os estudos sobre invasões biológicas. Visando ampliar o conhecimento sobre plantas consideradas invasoras e sua distribuição no estado de São Paulo, neste estudo aplicamos técnicas de modelagem preditiva a 10 espécies. Para cada uma delas buscamos caracterizar o padrão de invasão e identificar os fatores ambientais atuantes que limitam ou potencializam sua distribuição, por meio de modelos multi-hierárquicos de nicho ecológico. Para tanto, coletamos informações de ocorrência dessas espécies em todo o mundo e registramos coordenadas geográficas, características das populações e dos ambientes invadidos por essas espécies em todos os tipos de vegetação e em todas as regiões do estado de São Paulo. Com base nesses dados, caracterizamos o padrão de invasão de cada espécie e a invasibilidade de cada tipo vegetacional estudado. Aplicamos a metodologia de modelagem multi-hierárquica de nicho ecológico por meio do algoritmo MaxEnt em macro escala para todo o globo e em meso escala para o estado de São Paulo. Apesar das peculiaridades das espécies e dos tipos de vegetação, nossos resultados evidenciam a influência do estado de conservação do ecossistema e da posição na paisagem sobre a severidade da invasão e, também, sobre a invasibilidade dos tipos de vegetação em escala local. Mesmo os tipos de vegetação mais resistentes, como a restinga e a floresta ombrófila densa, podem se tornar suscetíveis à invasão em função de distúrbios e da pressão de propágulos. Em fragmentos conservados, porém, são raras as espécies exóticas capazes de se estabelecer e se tornar uma ameaça real à conservação. As fitofisionomias mais abertas do Cerrado mostraram-se como os tipos de vegetação suscetíveis à invasão pelo maior número de espécies, entre as estudadas. Em macro escala, os modelos de nicho ecológico identificaram as áreas potenciais de invasão e revelaram os limites fisiológicos de temperatura e precipitação para cada espécie, enquanto em meso escala, os modelos de nicho refinaram estas previsões e revelaram novos padrões associados com a distribuição das espécies na escala do estado de São Paulo. Este estudo gera contribuições importantes em termos de informação sobre as características e áreas potenciais de invasão para gestores e tomadores de decisão no processo de prevenção e controle de invasões, bem como identifica limites e fatores ambientais que contribuem para a melhor compreensão de invasões biológicas no Brasil. De forma geral, a abordagem multi-hierárquica se mostrou uma ferramenta poderosa para explorar padrões de distribuição em escalas apropriadas com os objetivos de conservação, prevenção e controle de espécies exóticas. / In recent decades, as a result of globalization and international trade, the movement of species away from their native regions has grown in frequency and extent, increasing the risk of biological invasions, which can significantly impact the economy, the functioning of ecosystems and cause biodiversity loss. The eradication of invasive species it is not an easy task, usually with little chance of success, so that prevent the invasion is still the best management alternative. Predictive species distribution modeling techniques have generally been applied to predict the potential distribution of invasive species. In Brazil, studies on biological invasions are recent and insufficient to understand the current invasive status. To enhance understanding about invasive plants and its distribution in the state of São Paulo, in this study we apply predictive modeling techniques to 10 species considered invasive. For each of the selected species we seek to characterize the invasion pattern and identify the active environmental factors that limit or leverage its distribution through multihierarchical ecological niche models. For this purpose, we collect information for these species occurring worldwide and recorded geographical coordinates characteristics of populations and environments invaded by these species in all vegetation types and in all regions of the state of São Paulo. Based on these data, we characterize the invasion pattern of each species and the invasiveness of each vegetation type studied. We applied the multihierarchical ecological niche modeling methodology through MaxEnt algorithm in macro scale for the entire globe and meso scale for the state of São Paulo. Despite the peculiarities of species and vegetation types, our results highlight the influence of ecosystem conservation status and position in the landscape on the severity of the invasion and on the invasiveness of vegetation types on a local scale. Even the most resistant types of vegetation, such as the restinga and the tropical rain forest, can become susceptible to invasion because of disturbances and seedlings pressure. In conserved fragments, however, exotic species were rarely able to settle down and become a real threat to conservation. The more open forms of the Cerrado vegetation types appeared as the most susceptible to invasion by most of the studied species. In macro scale, the ecological niche models identified the potential areas of invasion and revealed the physiological limits of temperature and precipitation for each species, while in meso scale, niche models refined these projections and revealed new patterns associated with the distribution of species on the scale of São Paulo. This study provides important contributions in terms of information about the characteristics and potential areas of invasion for managers and decision makers in prevention and control of invasions and identifies limitations and environmental factors that contribute to a better understanding of biological invasions in Brazil. In general, the multihierarchical approach proved to be a powerful tool to explore patterns of distribution at scales compatible with conservation objectives, prevention and control of alien species.

Microbial Aspects of Plant Invasion: An Analysis of Soil Microbial Communities Associated with the Invasive Plant - (Schinus terebinthifolius) Brazilian Pepper Tree Across South-Eastern Florida.

The Brazilian pepper tree (BP, Schinus terebinthifolius), introduced to the United States in the 1800s, has since become a category one invasive plant in Florida, aggressively spreading to 3000 km2 of prime habitat. There is a serious dearth of knowledge on whether the rhizobiome plays any roles in the displacement of native flora and the range expansion of BP. This thesis discusses the well-established plant invasion mechanisms of the BP and highlights key emerging mechanisms and gaps in (a) the current understanding of the molecular, below-ground processes of BP invasion and (b) studies on the potential role of microbial interactions in the success of BP invasion already established for other select invasive species, and the intervention of soil metagenomic studies to elucidate plant invasive mechanisms. Écologie de Sericostachys scandens, liane envahissante dans les forêts de montagne du Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega, République Démocratique du Congo

Le Parc National de Kahuzi-Biega (PNKB) se localise dans l’Est de la R.D. Congo, à une trentaine des kilomètres au Nord de la ville de Bukavu, (province du Sud-Kivu). Ce parc couvre une superficie de 6.000 km² dont 5.400 km² situés en basse altitude (600-1200 m d’altitude) et 600 km² constituent le secteur de haute altitude occupée par les forêts de montagne (1800-3308 m). Depuis environ une décennie, la liane indigène Sericostachys scandens Gilg & Lopr. (Amarantaceae) se répand rapidement dans les forêts de montagne au PNKB. L’extension de cette liane, et ses conséquences supposées sur la biodiversité et la régénération de la forêt inquiètent les gestionnaires du Parc. Le travail a examiné trois aspects de l’écologie de l’invasion par S. scandens dans le Parc. Premièrement, on a examiné les traits fonctionnels susceptibles d’expliquer une aptitude élevée à l’invasion chez S. scandens. Une approche comparative avec trois espèces de lianes non envahissantes coexistant dans le même habitat montre que S. scandens présente une allocation de biomasse aux diaspores significativement plus élevée. En plus, elle combine une reproduction sexuée intense et une capacité de reproduction végétative. Cette liane se distingue également des trois autres par un taux de ramification plus élevé. Par contre, les traits foliaires ne sont pas systématiquement différents. De même, le taux de germination des graines de S. scandens ne diffère pas significativement de ceux des autres lianes étudiées. Cependant, il est significativement plus élevé en canopée ouverte qu’en canopée fermée, et en forêt ombrophile qu’en forêt de bambous. L’ensemble des traits qui caractérisent S. scandens peut contribuer à expliquer sa plus grande capacité d’invasion, comparativement aux trois autres lianes. Deuxièmement, on a examiné les attributs des écosystèmes susceptibles de les rendre vulnérables à l’invasion. Les résultats suggèrent que les perturbations favorisent les invasions dans les écosystèmes. Les perturbations (coupes, feu, …) qui ont accompagné les conflits dans la zone du Parc sont, très probablement, le facteur ayant déclenché l’invasion. Enfin, le travail a examiné les impacts de l’invasion sur la biodiversité et la régénération des forêts. Les résultats montrent que, effectivement, S. scandens a un impact négatif, et que cet impact pourrait contribuer à renforcer le succès invasif de S. scandens (feed-back positif). Le travail aboutit à des recommandations pour la gestion du Parc. La gestion doit avant tout être préventive, c’est-à-dire i) empêcher de nouveaux déboisements et ii) éliminer S. scandens au tout début de son installation dans un site perturbé.

Round goby invasion of the Baltic Sea : the role of phenotypic variation

Biological invasions are a major threat to biodiversity world wide with annual economic costs up to 1.4 trillion dollars. The round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) is a particularly fierce invader that threatens ecological function of the Baltic Sea. Individual variation in behavioral traits that remain constant through time and context have been identified as crucial factors for explaining different parts of the invasion process. For example, asocial behavior facilitates dispersal from high density populations and comes with fitness benefits in low conspecific density. The latter is especially relevant, in an invasion context, following the initial colonization of a novel environment when population density usually is low. This thesis investigates the role of individual variation in phenotypic traits on species invasions. The main focus is on the effects of sociability, activity and boldness, but also including aggression and physiological stress tolerance, on dispersal tendency and selection at invasion fronts. To do this, we studied four round goby populations in the Baltic Sea, two of the most recently established and two of the oldest populations. In 2012 we demonstrated that asocial, active and bold round gobies are overrepresented at invasion fronts. Two years later we showed that dispersal from the new populations was led by individuals with high activity levels, while in all populations larger individuals dispersed. We also determined the length of the socalled lag-phase, between colonization and spread, in both newly established populations. The end of the lag-phase is hypothesized being triggered by high population density in the harbors leading to dispersal and subsequen colonization of the surrounding areas by small asocial individuals. In our final experiment, we present evidence of stress coping styles in round gobies, in which more aggressive individuals are also more stress tolerant and vice versa. Though we found no connection between stress coping and population age, we found that mortality was unaffected by population density and that the gobies became more aggressive and stress tolerant when kept in high density. To conclude, we have shown that: 1) individuals with high levels of activity, boldness and asociality are common at invasion fronts; 2) a lag phase occurs between colonization and spread in round goby invasions; 3) asocial individuals drive the spread from high density populations at the invasion front and; 4) round gobies adapt to high densities with high aggression and stress tolerance.
