Paul's corporate Christophany : an evaluation of Paul's Christophanic references in their epistolary contexts

Fringer, Robbie January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates references to Paul's Christophany in the undisputed Pauline letters. Paul's Christophanic experience has been the subject of much scholarly analysis. However, treatments of this phenomenon, while widely varied, have primarily concentrated on reconstruction of the cause, event, and effects of this phenomenon, discovery of the foundation of Paul's Christology and/or reconstruction of his Christology, and on conversion/call in general. Few have focused on the purpose behind Paul's employment of his Christophanic references in their particular literary and socio-historical contexts and none have undertaken a full-length study of each Pauline Christophanic references seeking to discover the extent to which Paul uses these references in context to shape his various communities. This is the task of this thesis. It begins by setting criteria for establishing which of the many proposed references can be deemed a Christophanic reference and based on these criteria confirms five pericopae for further evaluation: Gal 1:11-17; 1 Cor 9:1-2, 16-17; 1 Cor 15:1-11; Phil 3:4-14; and 2 Cor 3:1-4:6. Each of these confirmed references is then evaluated within their specific literary and socio-historical contexts. Special attention is given to possible intertextual links which aid in interpreting Paul's larger purposes within the epistles as well as more specific purposes behind his employment of the Christophanic reference. A significant reliance on Isaiah, especially Isa 40-66, is highlighted. Through this assessment, the importance of Paul's Christophanic references as part of his larger arguments is established. It is shown how Paul uniquely shapes the various Christophanic references to fit the needs of his argument and through it, the needs of the community. Furthermore, it evidences that Paul's Christophanic references are not primarily used to establish his apostolic status or to assert his apostolic authority. Through this study, the corporate nature of Paul's Christophanic references becomes increasingly evident and multiple general conclusions are drawn, which provide a possible glimpse into Paul's understanding of his Christophanic experience. Specifically, it is argued that Paul's Christophanic references primarily functioned in three ways. They functioned didactically, providing an avenue for instruction within Paul's overall argument. They functioned paradigmatically, offering the various communities a model of correct identity and action that should be imitated. Lastly, a few of the references also functioned analogously, illustrating Paul's understanding of the shared elements of their conversion, calling, and identity, which are made possible through a revelation of Christ/Spirit to all believers.

Salvação integral: uma análise sêmio-discursiva de Isaias 65.17-25

William Lacy Lane 11 March 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the prophetic text of Isaiah 65.17-25 through a semiotic discursive analysis applied to biblical exegesis to demonstrate how this text characterizes the persons, time and space of salvation. It is shown that the salvation described in the text reflect the integration of the human being with God, with the social and life contexts, and it reflects the unity of the local and the cosmic realities. From the identification by form criticism of the literary unit as an oracle of salvation, this analysis seeks to contribute to the theological reflection of the concept of salvation of the Integral Mission movement in the context of the protestant evangelical theology of Latin America. The first chapter examines the history of interpretation of the text, starting with its use by the New Testament writers to the recent developments of biblical exegesis. The second chapter investigates several issues concerning the search for meaning in the hermeneutics, linguistics and exegetical studies. It also presents the theoretical and methodological references for the analysis. Following a semiotic discursive criteria for the analysis of a text, chapter three analyzes the expression of the text and, chapter four, the content.

Tjatji, Ramogohlo Magdeline 23 September 2014 (has links)
M.A. (African Languages) / The aim of this dissertation is to make a critical analysis of the poetry of M.I Mogodi. The study comprises of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction where the focus is on why the poet's work is chosen for research. We will look into how the writer uses language to communicate his ideas in an understandable way. In the second chapter of our study we intend to develop a stylistic framework by looking deeper into the stylistic and other contributions made by different critics. In the third chapter of this study the intention is to analyze Mogodi's poetry books by looking into the different poetic techniques used by the poet. The analysis is undertaken by looking into the lexical, phonological and syntactic level. The fourth chapter of this work will endeavour to indicate how the poet has used proverbs, idioms and imagery as stylistic features to bring about more understanding in the literary work. Chapter five is the conclusion where we look back at how Mogodi managed to employ a variety of stylistic features to reveal his intention in his literary work.

Isaiah Berlin y P. F. Strawson : antecedentes del pluralismo en la tradición analítica de la filosofía

Pereira Fredes, Esteban January 2011 (has links)

Political Ethics and the Spirit of Liberalism in Twentieth-Century Political Thought

Cherniss, Joshua 01 January 2016 (has links)
Liberalism is often criticized as too moralistic and removed from the realities of politics; and too complacently accepting of injustices. Such criticisms, familiar among contemporary political theorists, were expressed far more forcefully in the earlier twentieth century. Liberalism then came under attack from anti-liberals who wholly rejected the institutional and ethical limits on the political deployment of violence and fear insisted upon by liberals. Such anti-liberals advanced arguments for political ruthlessness on behalf of a truer morality - either the morality of pursuing morally imperative political goals; or the morality of "realistically" responding to threats to public order. Liberals found themselves faced with a dilemma: to adhere to their principles at the price of hampering their ability to combat both existing injustices, and the threat posed by ruthless anti-liberal movements; or to abandon their scruples in seeking to defend, or transform, liberal society. The criticisms and challenges confronting liberalism between the end of World War I, and the end of the Cold War, thus centered on opposing responses to problems of political ethics. They were also shaped by opposed ideals of political ethos - the "spirit", dispositions of character, sensibility and patterns of perception and response, which characterize the way in which actors pursue their values and goals in practice. In this dissertation I reconstruct these debates, and explicate the ethical claims and questions involved, presenting accounts of the opposed - yet often convergent - positions of moral purism, end-maximalism, and realism. I offer accounts of the ethical arguments and ethos of such anti-liberals as Lenin, Trotsky, and Lukacs; and explore the ambivalent commitments and ambiguous arguments of Max Weber, who influenced both critics and defenders of liberalism. Finally, and primarily, I reconstruct the ethical arguments and ethos of "tempered liberalism" - a strain of liberalism, represented by Reinhold Niebuhr, Isaiah Berlin, and Adam Michnik, which sought to re-imagine liberalism as an ethos which rejected both the innocence and complacency of some earlier liberalisms, and the ruthlessness of anti-liberalism, and steered a "moderate" ethical path between hard-headed, skeptical realism, and values of individual integrity and idealism. / Government

The Tradition of Isaiah in The Book of Mormon

Bishop, Gary L. 01 January 1974 (has links) (PDF)
This study presents a textual and grammatical analysis of 52 passages of Isaiah as they are found in Cave IV of the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Masoretic Text, the Septuagint, the King James version, and the Book of Mormon. The objective was to determine the relationship, if any, of those verses in the Book of Mormon with the other textual traditions. Based on the differences between the Book of Mormon text and the King James version, and upon the confirmation of those Book of Mormon differences by the other traditions, it was concluded that The Book of Mormon follows its own tradition.

The Problem of Isaiah in The Book of Mormon

Vest, H. Grant 01 January 1938 (has links) (PDF)
The problem of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon is specifically a study in Historical Criticism. In nature it is a textual problem especially adapted to the methods of textual science. This includes, of course, both branches of that science, namely, lower criticism and higher criticism.

Three Portrayals of King Hezekiah: A Comparison of 2 Kings 18-20, Isaiah 36-39, and 2 Chronicles 29-32

Choi, Jeaman (Jaeman) 13 March 2015 (has links)

Hezekiah is portrayed as a pious and faithful king in three biblical accounts: 2 Kgs 18-20, Isa 36-39 and 2 Chr 29-32. The way Hezekiah is characterized, however, is quite different in each of these three biblical accounts. Utilizing narrative analysis, this dissertation concentrated specifically on the characterization of Hezekiah in the literary context of these three biblical accounts. Hezekiah's story was examined first as a discrete account applying narrative features separately and then as a story within the larger context of each book. Then, the portrayal of Hezekiah in the three biblical books was compared in conclusion. This dissertation demonstrated that these three biblical accounts relate the same reign of King Hezekiah in their unique way according to their purpose and their individual point of view. The Kings account focuses on Hezekiah's political events including his negative aspects in order to show the faithfulness of the LORD in His promise to David (2 Sam 7) through Hezekiah's faithful actions to the LORD. Hezekiah is portrayed as a round character whose characterization is developed within the story. In Isaiah, the Hezekiah story is reshaped by the narrator by omitting and inserting some parts of Hezekiah's narratives in the Kings account. Hezekiah is portrayed as a more faithful king than his father, Ahaz, in order to encourage the people who heard the visions of Isaiah, to trust in the LORD sincerely. In Chronicles, the Hezekiah narratives are related differently by expanding, abridging, and rephrasing his Vorlage. The Chronicles account depicts Hezekiah as the best king among the Davidic kings in order to indicate the beginning of the reunited kingdom. Thus, the Chronicles account fully expands Hezekiah's religious reforms and abridges his political events in order to portray him as a second David and Solomon. In the three accounts, Hezekiah is not portrayed as a perfect king, but instead as a limited human king in order to encourage the readers to see the LORD, the heavenly King.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
