TERAHERTZ SPECTROSCOPY OF CrH (X 6Σ+) AND AlH (X 1Σ+)

New laboratory measurements of hydrides have been carried out using terahertz direct absorption spectroscopy. Spin components of the N = 2 <- 1 transition of the free radical CrH (X (6)Sigma(+)) have been recorded in the range 730-734 GHz, as well as a new measurement of the J = 2 <- 1 line of AlH (X (1)Sigma(+)) near 755 GHz. Both species were created in an AC discharge of H-2, argon, and metal vapor. For CrH, the chromium source was Cr(CO)(6), while AlH was produced from Al(CH3)3. The J = 4.5 <- 3.5 and 3.5 <- 2.5 fine-structure components were recorded for CrH, each which consists of resolved proton hyperfine doublets. For AlH, the two main quadrupole components, F = 4.5 <- 3.5 and 3.5 <- 2.5, of the J = 2 <- 1 transition were observed as blended features. These data were analyzed with previous 1 <- 0 millimeter/submillimeter measurements with (6)Sigma and (1)Sigma Hamiltonians for chromium and aluminum hydrides, respectively, and rotational, fine-structure (CrH only), and hyperfine constants were derived. The new measurements have resulted in refined spectroscopic parameters for both species, as well as direct measurement of the respective 2 <- 1 rotational transitions. This work also resolves a 10 MHz discrepancy in the frequency of the AlH line. CrH and AlH have already been observed in the photospheres of stars via their electronic transitions. These data will facilitate their discovery at submillimeter/terahertz wavelengths in circumstellar envelopes and perhaps in diffuse clouds.

Core-Collapse Supernova Remnants and Interactions with Their Surroundings

This thesis examines three core-collapse supernova remnants (SNR) - the Cygnus Loop in the Milky Way and 0453-68.5 and 0540-69.3 in the Large Magellanic Cloud - of varying ages and in varying states of interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM), using X-ray imaging spectroscopy with Chandra and supplemental data from other wavelengths. We use results from our analysis to address three main questions. First, we examine the applicability of the common Sedov-Taylor adiabatic blast wave model to core-collapse supernovae. Second, we determine the elemental abundances around the shell of these supernova remnants to determine if the use of SNRs as a gauge of abundances in the ISM is justified. Finally, we examine the pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe) in 0453-68.5 and 0540-69.3 and search for evidence of interaction between these PWNe and their immediate surroundings. We see highly inhomogeneous ISM surrounding all three surveyed SNRs, contrary to the key assumption in the Sedov-Taylor model of a uniform surrounding medium. In all three studied SNRs, we find that shock speeds are dependent on the density of the surrounding material. As subsidiary results, we also find depleted elemental abundances of oxygen, magnesium, and silicon, relative to typical ISM, around all three studied supernova remnants. Although this subsidiary result is not conclusive, we believe that it merits a followup study. In 0540-69.3 and 0453-68.5, which contain central pulsars, we find that the explosion directionality, which can be inferred from the pulsar's proper motion relative to the SNR, is not related to the morphology of the SNR itself. We conclude from this that the asymmetric shapes common in core-collapse supernova remnants can be more a function of the complex environments surrounding the progenitors of core- collapse supernovae than of the supernova explosions themselves. Finally, we see that the PWN in 0453-68.5 shows signs of having mixed with the surrounding thermal- emitting material, while the PWN in 0540-69.3 appears to have not mixed with or interacted with the surrounding SNR material to any substantial degree. We believe that this result may indicate that the degree of interaction between a PWN and its surroundings is dependent on age and possibly shell morphology, although further study is needed.

On assiste actuellement à un développement très important des radiocommunications en milieux urbains et à l'intérieur des édifices notamment avec la généralisation des réseaux WLAN et l'augmentation du nombre de terminaux mobiles capables de se connecter à ces réseaux. Ces communications sont altérées par la présence de trajets multiples à l'origine d'évanouissements de puissance du signal au niveau du récepteur. La diversité d'antennes qui consiste à recevoir et à recombiner des signaux décorrélés reçus par un système d'antennes présentant de la diversité (diversité spatiale, de polarisation ou de diagramme) constitue un moyen efficace pour améliorer le lien radio dans ces environnements sujets aux multi trajets. Dans un contexte SIMO (Single Input Multiple Output), nous avons donc travaillé sur différents systèmes d'antennes présentant de la diversité et potentiellement intégrables dans des objets communicants mobiles. Afin de comparer leurs performances, nous avons développé et implémenté une méthodologie d'évaluation théorique de la diversité en introduisant des nouvelles notions comme le gain de diversité référencé. Cette méthodologie permet de choisir objectivement le système d'antennes le plus adapté pour une application donnée comme le montre plusieurs cas étudiés au travers d'exemples concrets. En complément des outils théoriques définis, nous avons travaillé sur la mise au point d'un banc de test permettant de quantifier l'amélioration du lien radio en termes de taux d'erreur binaire apporté par un système à diversité d'antennes. Cette méthode d'évaluation expérimentale se différencie de l'état de l'art en proposant un système basé sur l'utilisation de signaux radios modulés correspondant à des standards existants. Les résultats d'une première campagne de mesures et le protocole expérimental sont détaillés dans ce document.

Self-sampled All-MOS ASK Demodulator & Synchronous DAC with Self-calibration for Bio-medical Applications

This thesis includes two topics, which are a Self-sampled ALL-MOS ASK Demodulator and a Synchronous DAC with Self-calibration. An all-MOS ASK demodulator with a wide bandwidth for lower ISM band applications is presented in the first half of this thesis. The chip area is reduced without using any passive element. It is very compact to be integrated in an SOC (system-on-chip) for wireless biomedical applications, particularly in biomedical implants. Because of low area cost and low power consumption, the proposed design is also easily to be integrated in other mobile medical devices. The self-sampled loop with a MOS equivalent capacitor compensation mechanism enlarges the bandwidth, which is more than enough to be adopted in any application using lower ISM bands. To demonstrate this technique, an ASK demodulator prototype is implemented and measured using a TSMC 0.35 £gm standard CMOS process. The second topic reveals a synchronous DAC with self-calibration. The main idea is to use a calibration circuit to overcome large error of output voltage caused by the variation of the unit capacitor. When DAC is not calibrated, INL is larger than 1.7 LSB. After calibrated, INL is improved to be smaller than 0.5 LSB. To demonstrate this technique, a DAC prototype is implemented and measured using a TSMC 0.18 £gm standard CMOS process.

Development of a new low resolution spectrograph for probing Lyman-alpha emitters in the HETDEX survey

The Hobby-Eberly Telescope Dark Energy Experiment (HETDEX) will map the power spectrum of 0.8 million blindly discovered Lyman-alpha Emitting Galaxies (LAE) using a revolutionary new array of massively replicated, fiber-fed spectrographs dubbed the Visible Integral-Field Replicable Unit Spectrograph (VIRUS). In the era of the Hobby-Eberly Telescope wide-field upgrade, the current Low Resolution Spectrograph (LRS) must be replaced with a fiber instrument. In this thesis, I discuss the development of the second generation LRS (LRS2), which is an R>1200 multi-channel instrument based on the VIRUS design and fed by a 287 fiber, 7” x 12” microlens coupled integral field unit. I focus on the blue optimized version of the instrument (3720<[lamda] (Angstroms)<7000), specifically on the opto-mechanical design of the VPH grisms. With the purpose of making the instrument ideal for the follow-up of LAE in the HETDEX survey, I discuss the science drivers for selecting the spectral resolution of the instrument. To test the utility of such an instrument, I present R~2400 spectra of two LAE that were originally discovered in the HETDEX Pilot Survey (Adams et al. 2011). These data were taken with the VIRUS prototype spectrograph in a high-resolution mode at the McDonald Observatory Harlan J. Smith 2.7 m telescope. The Lyman-alpha line profiles are constrained by near-infrared observations of rest-frame optical emission lines from Finkelstein et al. (2011), which set the systemic redshift of the galaxies. I discuss the velocity offsets of the Lyman-alpha line from the systemic line center and the implications for the HETDEX survey. I compare the line profiles to theory, specifically to those describing dust attenuation, outflows or inflows of neutral gas on the galactic scale, and attenuation in the intergalactic medium. This study provides an example of how LRS2 can be used to probe Lyman-alpha emission in 2<z<3 star-forming galaxies. / text

This dissertation deals with Intrusion and Hold-up Alarm System wireless communication (I&HAS). The main objective is to determine security risks of wireless communication between detectors and PBX, eventually to recommend how to avoid these risks. The research was conducted on different detector types. The first theoretical part of dissertation describes variety detector types, wireless communication types and theoretical security risks of these communications. The practical part of dissertation describes the above mentioned security risks investigated in practice as well as the measurement of communication between detectors and PBX. The recommendations how to avoid these risk are placed at the end of dissertation.

An ALMA [C ii] Survey of 27 Quasars at z > 5.94

We present a survey of the [C II] 158 mu m line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission in a sample of 27 greater than or similar to 6 quasars using the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) at similar to 1 '' resolution. The [C II] line was significantly detected (at > 5-sigma) in 23 sources (85%). We find typical line luminosities of L-[C (II]) = 10(9-10) L-circle dot, and an average line width of similar to 385 km s(-1). The [C II]-to-far-infrared luminosity ratios ([C II]/FIR) in our sources span one order of magnitude, highlighting a variety of conditions in the star-forming medium. Four quasar host galaxies are clearly resolved in their [C II] emission on a few kpc scales. Basic estimates of the dynamical masses of the host galaxies give masses between 2 x 10(10) and 2 x 10(11) M-circle dot, i.e., more than an order of magnitude below what is expected from local scaling relations, given the available limits on the masses of the central black holes (> 3 x 10(8) M-circle dot, assuming Eddington-limited accretion). In stacked ALMA [C II] spectra of individual sources in our sample, we find no evidence of a deviation from a single Gaussian profile. The quasar luminosity does not strongly correlate with either the [C II] luminosity or equivalent width. This survey (with typical on-source integration times of 8 minutes) showcases the unparalleled sensitivity of ALMA at millimeter wavelengths, and offers a unique reference sample for the study of the first massive galaxies in the universe.

Copious Amounts of Dust and Gas in a z = 7.5 Quasar Host Galaxy

We present IRAM/NOEMA and JVLA observations of the quasar J1342+0928 at z = 7.54 and report detections of copious amounts of dust and [C Pi] emission in the interstellar medium (ISM) of its host galaxy. At this redshift, the age of the universe is 690 Myr, about 10% younger than the redshift of the previous quasar record holder. Yet, the ISM of this new quasar host galaxy is significantly enriched by metals, as evidenced by the detection of the [C 158 mu m cooling line and the underlying far-infrared (FIR) dust continuum emission. To the first order, the FIR properties of this quasar host are similar to those found at a slightly lower redshift (z similar to 6), making this source by far the FIR-brightest galaxy known at z greater than or similar to 7.5. The [C Pi]emission is spatially unresolved, with an upper limit on the diameter of 7 kpc. Together with the measured FWHM of the [C Pi]line, this yields a dynamical mass of the host of <1.5 x 10(11) M-circle dot Using standard assumptions about the dust temperature and emissivity, the NOEMA measurements give a dust mass of (0.6-4.3) x 10(8) M-circle dot The brightness of the [C Pi] luminosity, together with the high dust mass, imply active ongoing star formation in the quasar host. Using [C Pi]-SFR scaling relations, we derive star formation rates of 85-545 M-circle dot yr(-1) in the host, consistent with the values derived from the dust continuum. Indeed, an episode of such past high star formation is needed to explain the presence of similar to 10(8) M-circle dot of dust implied by the observations.

The HR 4796A Debris System: Discovery of Extensive Exo-ring Dust Material

The optically and IR-bright and starlight-scattering HR 4796A ringlike debris disk is one of the most-(and best-) studied exoplanetary debris systems. The presence of a yet-undetected planet has been inferred (or suggested) from the narrow width and inner/outer truncation radii of its r = 1.'' 05 (77 au) debris ring. We present new, highly sensitive Hubble Space Telescope (HST) visible-light images of the HR 4796A circumstellar debris system and its environment over a very wide range of stellocentric angles from 0.'' 32 (23 au) to approximate to 15 '' (1100 au). These very high-contrast images were obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) using six-roll PSF template-subtracted coronagraphy suppressing the primary light of HR 4796A, with three image-plane occulters, and simultaneously subtracting the background light from its close angular proximity M2.5V companion. The resulting images unambiguously reveal the debris ring embedded within a much larger, morphologically complex, and biaxially asymmetric exo-ring scattering structure. These images at visible wavelengths are sensitive to and map the spatial distribution, brightness, and radial surface density of micron-size particles over 5 dex in surface brightness. These particles in the exo-ring environment may be unbound from the system and interacting with the local ISM. Herein, we present a new morphological and photometric view of the larger-than-prior-seen HR 4796A exoplanetary debris system with sensitivity to small particles at stellocentric distances an order of magnitude greater than has previously been observed.

Particle acceleration model for the broad-band baseline spectrum of the Crab nebula

We develop a simple one-zone model of the steady-state Crab nebula spectrum encompassing both the radio/soft X-ray and the GeV/multi-TeV observations. By solving the transport equation for GeV-TeV electrons injected at the wind termination shock as a log-parabola momentum distribution and evolved via energy losses, we determine analytically the resulting differential energy spectrum of photons. We find an impressive agreement with the observed spectrum of synchrotron emission, and the synchrotron self-Compton component reproduces the previously unexplained broad 200-GeV peak that matches the Fermi/Large Area Telescope (LAT) data beyond 1 GeV with the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) data. We determine the parameters of the single log-parabola electron injection distribution, in contrast with multiple broken power-law electron spectra proposed in the literature. The resulting photon differential spectrum provides a natural interpretation of the deviation from power law customarily fitted with empirical multiple broken power laws. Our model can be applied to the radio-to-multi-TeV spectrum of a variety of astrophysical outflows, including pulsar wind nebulae and supernova remnants, as well as to interplanetary shocks.
