Är Peter Singers preferensutilitarism en hållbar moralisk teori för djuretik? : En feministiskt omsorgetisk granskning av utilitarismens begränsningar / Is Peter Singer's Preference Utilitarianism a Tenable Moral Theory for Animal Ethics?

Sjöberg, Emma January 2022 (has links)
In this essay I present a discussion regarding if Peter Singer's preference utilitarianism is a tenable moral theory for animal ethics. This is done through an examination of criticism directed at Singer's theory and then examining whether the arguments stand on a legitimate basis. There are two arguments in focus presented by Josephine Donovan and as we will see they will indicate that Singer's theory does in fact have some troublesome elements that needs modification. I argue that the troublesome elements may be solved by the complexity of utilitarianism. In the final part of the essay I present a possible hybrid theory that includes parts from both Donovan's theory and aspects from the indirect utilitarianism.

Josephine Baker: a psychobiographical study

Eckley, Shannon Rose January 2012 (has links)
Psychobiographies examine an entire full life, from birth to death, with the aim of understanding the psychological development of that life. Psychobiographical research is a qualitative method of research, and is done by the use of both biography, and the application of relevant psychological theory. While the scientific merit of this type of research continues to be questioned and debated, interest in this area of research continues to grow on both a national, and international level. This particular research study aimed to explore the extraordinary and inspiring life of slave, dancer, singer, lover, soldier and mother, Josephine Baker (1906 – 1975), by applying Alfred Adler’s (1929) theory of personality namely, Individual Psychology. Josephine Baker was chosen by means of purposive sampling. The research study made use of a qualitative psychobiographical research method, which aimed to explore and describe the lived life and personality development of Josephine Baker, in terms of Alfred Adler’s (1929) theory of Individual Psychology. The data collection for this research study made use of a framework, as a means of selecting relevant data which formed a matrix, which in turn became a descriptive framework to organise and integrate the data (see Appendix A). The analysis thereof was done by the means of analytic generalisation (Yin, 1994). To assist in identifying salient data, analytical criteria namely, Alexander’s (1988) guidelines for the extraction of salient data were utilised (see Appendix B). This model also assisted in ensuring an accurate and complete description of Josephine Baker’s life in relation to the psychological theory used namely Alfred Adler’s theory of Individual Psychology. The findings of the study indicate that Josephine’s life paralleled Adler’s (1929) theory in many ways, and also indicated that the person she became was also strongly influenced by many familial, social, historical and cultural events of the time. This study has therefore shown that to date, there is still great value and relevance in Adler’s (1929) theory of Individual Psychology, even though it was proposed and developed almost a century ago. Consequently, recommendations regarding further psychiobiographical research in this area in the future have been made.

"Modern Primitive: Parody, Ambivalence, and Paradox in Paul Colin's Le Tumulte Noir"

Monroe, Julia Boyette 23 April 2014 (has links)
This thesis analyzes Paul Colin’s 1927 portfolio of lithographs entitled Le Tumulte Noir as an expression of the simultaneously progressive, celebratory, racist, and colonialist ideas about jazz music, dance, and blackness in Paris during the 1920s. Because the portfolio often demonstrates conflicting tropes for representing people of African American descent, for example minstrelsy vs. New Negro imagery, this thesis uses several methods for investigating the ambivalence of the artwork and the culture in which it was produced. The double-coding of meaning presented by parody, calligrams, and self-division are central to this analysis of Colin’s representations of the “Charlestonesque epidemic” in Jazz Age Paris. Images from Le Tumulte Noir are nearly ubiquitous in literature on the Parisian Jazz Age, and this thesis contextualizes the form, content, and iconography of the lithographs in light of the social and artistic history of 1920s Paris.

Sedimentology of the basal Stoddart Formation (Upper Mississippian) in the area of Josephine Field, northwest Alberta

Hrabi, Robert Blair 04 1900 (has links)

A sedimentogical and petrological examination of the basal sands of the Stoddart Formation in the area of Josephine field has been undertaken. The determination of the depositiianal environment and the history of sedimentation of the basal Stoddart sands are the objectives of this study.

The thick sands at the base of the Stoddart Formation which have a blocky gamma ray response consist of fine-grained sandstone dominated by angle of repose cross-bedding. The sedimentary structures, stratification types, composition and facies relationships of these sands indicate that they are of a coastal aeolian origin.

The compositional, textural and surface texture characteristics of these sands were studied under petrographic, cathodolumenescent and scanning electron microscopes. Observations indicate that the above criteria can be used to support the interpretation of an aeolian origin for the cross-bedded sands of the basal Stoddart Formation.

The sands of the basal Stoddart show rapid transitions between sub-aerial and marine environments. These rapid changes are believed to be caused by sudden sea level fluctuations resulting from movement of reactivated faults in the Peace River arch area.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)
