Patterns and dynamics of context-dependency in the marine rocky intertidalBerlow, Eric Layani 09 June 1995 (has links)
As ecologists are being called upon to predict the consequences of human
perturbations to natural communities, an important goal is to understand what factors
drive variability or consistency in nature.
In the rocky intertidal of San Juan Island, Washington, a comparative
experimental approach was used to investigate spatial and temporal variation in
community organization. The effect of predation on B. glandula varied dramatically over
small spatial scales between microhabitats but was remarkably consistent over time
withing a given microhabitat. The effects of predation on S. cariosus varied over time
within the same microhabitat. By repeating previous landmark experiments at our study
site, and replicating these experiments across microhabitats, the domain of applicability
of previous experimental information was greatly expanded.
In an early successional assemblage on the Oregon coast, I tested the hypothesis
that, when the direct effect of one species on another increases in relative strength, its
total effect (direct + indirect) is less variable or conditional than if the link between those
species is weak. The effect of strong predation by whelks was less sensitive to the
presence of additional species and more consistently dampened natural variation between
experimental starting dates and between individual replicates within a given experiment.
In contrast, the outcome of weak predation was more spatially and temporally variable in
sign, and whether it magnified or dampened differences between individual replicates
varied between experiments. Consequently the mean total effect of weak predation
generally did not differ significantly from zero. However, in some cases, the range of
variation (both within and between experiments) in the effect of weak predation exceeded
the magnitude of the strongest total effect observed.
Longer term results of the experiments on the Oregon coast examined the role of
historic factors in influencing the degree to which successional paths are canalized and
repeatable or contingent and variable. Succession in mid-intertidal patches in the mussel
bed displayed complex patterns of historic effects that varied between species and
between different stages of succession. Despite its potential complexity, this system
exhibited some consistent and repeatable patterns of succession. Some important
canalizing, or noise-dampening forces in this system included: 1) physiological and life-history
constraints, 2) compensatory responses of functionally redundant species, and 3)
strong interactions between species. / Graduation date: 1996

"Don Juan ist ein anderer" Peter Handkes Don Juan (erzählt von ihm selbst) in der literarischen Tradition des Don Juan-StoffesKullick, Stefanie 08 1900 (has links)
The figure of Don Juan with its numerous variations and adaptations has been widely
discussed in secondary literature. However, one of the most recent adaptations of the character,
Peter Handke’s novel Don Juan (erzählt von ihm selbst) (2004) has up to now been neglected.
This study tries to provide the first in-depth analysis of Handke’s book while specifically
centering on the character of Don Juan himself. The examination strives to determine whether
Don Juan, as portrayed by Handke, can still be understood as a real embodiment with roots in
the literary tradition or whether the author simply evokes an identical name without
establishing any real accordance.
In order to evaluate this specific treatment of Don Juan, it is necessary to establish a
theoretical framework which provides some insight into the recurrent features that constitute
the theme itself. This context will be instituted by the means of identifying motifs and
structures essential for understanding Don Juan’s place in world literature while relying on the
definitions of the terms “Motiv” and “Stoff” as they were formulated by Elisabeth Frenzel.
The analysis of Handke’s Don Juan (erzählt von ihm selbst) is structured into three
parts. Handke’s treatment of traditional motifs forms the first part of this interpretation whereas
an identification of thematic innovations serves as a second part. The analysis concludes with a
contextualisation of typical Handke thematic preoccupations. These are inextricably
incorporated into his treatment of the Don Juan motif and therefore absolutely necessary to
provide a comprehensive evaluation of this work.
The thesis affirms that Peter Handke’s Don Juan can be regarded as a convincing new
interpretation of the traditional Don Juan character. The author manages to include all the
relevant recurrent features that constitute the Don Juan theme but enhances them with
iv
innovations which reveal new aspects of the character. Some suggestions for further research,
e. g. an in-depth intertextual analysis or a psychoanalytical approach conclude the thesis.

Tectonic and volcanic structures of the southern flank of Axial Volcano, Juan de Fuca Ridge : results from a SeaMARC I sidescan sonar surveyAppelgate, T. Bruce 19 October 1988 (has links)
A 5km swath-width SeaMARC I sidescan sonar survey, conducted over
the zone of overlap between the southern rift zone of Axial Volcano and the northern
tip of the Vance spreading segment on the Juan de Fuca Ridge (between 45°24'N
and 45°50'N latitude), was analyzed to locate the present position of the Juan de
Fuca spreading axis, and to determine the tectonic and volcanic structure of the
seafloor. Sidescan data were processed in concert with the ship's Loran-C
navigation to construct navigated, orthorectified mosaics of the sidescan imagery. In
order to navigate the sidescan swaths, a simple numerical model was developed to
describe the tracking behavior of the towed sidescan vehicle. Successive positions
and orientations of the sidescan towfish were estimated, and were used to assign
latitude/longitude values to individual sidescan pixels. Navigated sidescan pixels
were mapped by computer onto an absolute (latitude/longitude) reference grid, and
the resulting sidescan mosaic was compared directly to existing high-resolution
SeaBeam bathymetry in order to discriminate the effects of large- and small-scale
roughness on the observed backscatter distribution. The Juan de Fuca spreading
axis between 45°25'N and 45°39'N is located within the axial valley of the Vance
segment. Relative age relationships, based on crosscutting and superposition
principles, indicate that the most recent volcanism within the axial valley has
occurred along the valley's central ridge, and that the most recent resolvable
extension within the axial valley has been concentrated between the central ridge and
west valley wall. The Vance segment terminates at 45°39'N, and is not associated
with a transform fault. The south rift zone of Axial volcano is a constructional
volcanic feature that is not faulted, and a discrete axis of spreading over the south
flank of Axial volcano is not resolvable in the sidescan imagery; however, the
spreading locus north of 45°39'N is constrained to a zone between 130°06'W and
129°54'W. The lack of a well-defined spreading axis north of 45°39'N indicates that
the physical manifestation of the divergent plate boundary has been modified or
masked by hotspot volcanic processes associated with Axial volcano such that a
definitive locus of spreading is not expressed in the surface morphology. / Graduation date: 1989
