Im Geist der Gegenwart : the speculative method of the art historian Fritz Burger

Hamer, Lauren Grace 2009 August 1900 (has links)
Between the outbreak of World War I and the mid-1930s, the best-selling and most widely read book on the topic of modern art in Germany was written by the art historian Fritz Burger (1877–1916). Burger is now all but forgotten in the art historiography of the period and absent in the English literature. This thesis provides the first English interpretation of Burger's major works and seeks to locate his art historical method in relation to then-contemporary intellectual streams. Trained in the late 19th century, Burger largely rejected the cultural-historical studies and theories of stylistic development and embraced an artistic-critical model forwarded by neo-Kantians like Adolf Hildebrand and Konrad Fiedler. Beginning with Burger's texts Cézanne und Hodler (1913) and Einführung in die Moderne Kunst (1917), I examine the conceptual underpinnings of these works with particular attention to Burger's notions of color, artistic cognition and philosophical speculation. I consider Burger's written output as the compliment to his hands-on pedagogical technique at the University of Munich, his involvement with the Munich avant-garde and friendship with the artist Wassily Kandinsky. Burger's work is a rare and early attempt to write about contemporary art as an historical document but without recourse to artistic biography or cultural milieu as interpretive tools. / text

A culture of dissonance : Wassily Kandinsky, atonality, and abstraction

Boland, Lynn 11 August 2015 (has links)
A Culture of Dissonance: Wassily Kandinsky, Atonality, and Abstraction by Lynn Edward Boland, Ph.D. Supervisor: Linda D. Henderson Wassily Kandinsky's interest in music as a source for abstraction in painting has often been noted in the scholarship on his art. However, no studies have sufficiently explained how the artist employed musical strategies, especially as he was developing his abstract style in the first decade of the twentieth century. Kandinsky's looked primarily to Arnold Schoenberg's new musical idioms and theories, and he was deeply inspired by highly dissonant music, but his ideas were set within a much broader context that further suggested and encouraged the expressive and transformative power of dissonance. By the late nineteenth century, extended passages of dissonance were common in musical compositions. At the same time, the concept of dissonance as a positive force was suggested in a wide range of late nineteenth-century literature, including the writings of Friedrich [should be this spelling throughout] Nietzsche, occult authors, popular texts on physics and experimental psychology, as well as within music and art theory. Close readings of Kandinsky's theoretical texts and selected works of art provide insights into how he might have understood and employed these concepts in his formation of an abstract style. Kandinsky's paintings Impression III (Concert) of 1911 and Composition VII of 1913 are the primary artistic foci of this study, along with his book Concerning the Spiritual in Art and the anthology Der Blaue Reiter, which he co-edited. This dissertation will seek to restore the concept of musical dissonance and its application in the visual arts to its historical context for Kandinsky. This will facilitate more informed formal analyses of Schoenberg's music and Kandinsky's paintings, which, in turn, suggest strategies of atonal musical composition applied to abstract painting. Additionally, this dissertation will establish an artistic context of visual dissonance that goes beyond Kandinsky, including artistic movements in France and Russia, allowing additional comparisons and a consideration of the larger impact of these ideas. / text

Ticho a zvuk / Silence and Sound

MICHÁLKOVÁ, Olga January 2012 (has links)
This theses focused on the topic of silence and sound is divided in two section. Theoretical part contains information and knowledge from fields of physical phenomena, theory opf colors, psychology and theory of art (mainly based on work of W. Kandinski), that establish theorethical baseline for practical part, in this case realized graphic intent. Realization of practical part is an authorial construction of plastic interpretation of silence and sound. It tries to graphically express these two constructs with combination of pottery and glass in colorful compositions.

Imagining Kandinsky’s theories as a synesthetic iPhone app

Unknown Date (has links)
Wassily Kandinsky wrote Über das Geistige in der Kunst, in 1912, and was translated from German into English by Michael Sadler. Naming it at first, “The Art of Spiritual Harmony” in 1914 it is known as, Concerning the Spiritual in Art. He wrote color and music theories based on angles, synesthetic experiences, subjective instincts, chromotherapy, and shapes. Kandinsky’s theories are worth continuing to research and bring forth into the new generation of technology where we can see music as numerical expressions. The goal of this iPhone Application is to teach users the relationship between color and music based on Kandinsky’s theories. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) has been responsible for one of the most respected works in this field. Poetry, synesthesia and sensitivity are hallmarks since his childhood. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, art showed signs of breaking with the representation of the outside world model. In this scenario, Kandinsky sought the inner/spiritual content of the art work: the inner sonority. Through inner sonority, different outward forms can achieve the same resonance in the soul of the viewer. In his book "Concerning the Spiritual in Art", published in 1914, Kandinsky set out the main concepts related to inner sonority. The author seemed to predict new directions for art, in which external values would be reduced and inner sonority amplified. This dissertation presents a reflection on this scenario. It points out the path traveled by Kandinsky in the development of his language, focusing on issues concerning relations between codes. It also sets out the main concepts presented in his book , presents the Monumental Art, concept created by Kandinsky, in which several codes are related, brings an analysis of parts of the scenic composition "The Yellow sound", that is an example of the Monumental Art. And finally, it presents an art essay written by the author of this dissertation, in which elements of visual, sonorous and verbal codes are related through inner sonority / A relação entre os códigos visual, sonoro e verbal é um tema que sempre fascinou diversos artistas e pesquisadores.

Between figuration and abstraction, plastic dance and poetry : exchange and influence between painters, choreographers and librettists from 1909 to 1933 in France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland

Cléren, Marie 30 November 2017 (has links)
In the run-up to the 20th century, a multifaceted phenomenon called pictorial abstraction has turned the art community upside down. In Europe, from the “Belle Epoque” to the Roaring Twenties, avant-garde painters have crossed paths with poets and choreographers with whom they shared their desire for change. Their collaborations with donors and enlightened amateurs gave rise to a new kind of shows in which the boundaries between the various artistic disciplines have been abolished. The association of painting to spatial art and dance that also brought in time, raised questions that led to an idea of a “plastic ballet” as a substitute for “dramatic ballet”; an idea put forward by Noverre. The choreographic and pictorial worlds have had a reciprocal influence on one another; however, the research world is only now starting to consider the significance of these interactions. Anyhow, is it possible to talk about a total abstraction within this particular field, knowing that nothing can be more concrete than a dancing body? This trend is not a linear evolution from figuration towards abstraction between 1909 and 1933 but some principles used on canvases were applied in the ballet world, both on stage and backstage. Will painters manage to break the illusion by breaking out of the cage-like stage? By expanding the sizes of their paintings, will they have anything else to show than animated tableaux? What happens to the libretto in a ballet where letters are outweighed by colours and shapes? Questioning abstraction in literature involves questioning the mere existence of texts as the underpinning of ballets. Yet, the libretto is far from disappearing ; it transforms itself and is thus at the forefront of this abstract composition.
