Corpuscules : les univers cachés des objets et autres dérives / Corpuscules Les univers cachés des objets et autres dérives

Kenny-Gagnon, Marilou 03 July 2019 (has links)

A Legacy of McCoy Tyner from 1962 to 1967: Chick Corea's and Kenny Kirkland's Intervallic Improvisational Tendencies with Pentatonic and Octatonic Scales from 1968 to 1996

Kim, Yeeun 05 1900 (has links)
This research aims to trace the influence of McCoy Tyner's style of "intervallic improvisation" on Chick Corea and Kenny Kirkland, as evident in both later pianists' use of triad shapes and patterns based on pentatonic and octatonic scales. While the languages of Chick Corea and Kenny Kirkland were influenced by Tyner, they each subsequently established different harmonic structures and rhythmic devices. Therefore, I describe the stylistic similarity of pentatonic cells based on an intervallic approach to improvisation from one generation to the next with Tyner's improvisational vocabulary found in Kenny Kirkland and Chick Corea. Then, I demonstrate its modernization with octatonic patterns and triad pairs in the jazz tradition via a comparison of the improvisational tendencies of Kirkland and Corea.

Fra innsikt til uttrykk : En studie av musikalsk prestasjonsangst og bruken av rutiner / From Insight to Expression : A Study of Musical Performance Anxiety and the Usage of Routines

Wetås Jara, Andreas January 2021 (has links)
This study explores how the usage of routines can affect and lower the occurrence of Musical Performance Anxiety (MPA). The main aim is to find a way to handle the performance anxiety, so that it doesn't affect the musical expression and the performer's way of playing. The study shows a correlation between the usage of simple routines such as; good sleep, yoga and light exercise, and descending levels of Musical Performance Anxiety (MPA). Documentation is done by heart rate measurement, customized measuring and Kenny Musical Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI). The usage of routines, in my opinion, led to improved musical expression in the performances. I hope this study may help other musicians and music students struggling with the challenge of performance anxiety.

A group of undergraduate and graduate music students was asked to respond the Kenny Music Performance Anxiety Inventory (K-MPAI) questionnaire to assess their MPA level along with semi-structured interview, which was recorded for later analysis. In this dialogue, the subjects explained in detail how they are affected by the MPA and the strategies they use for its control. Reported strategies were: spirituality (prayer), use of beta-blockers, meditation routines to focus upon performance, consultation of self-help literature, self-talk, breath control, physical activity, positive perception of arousal, relaxation techniques, acceptance of small errors, switch instruments, simulation of performance and mental practice. The results confirm the existence of the MPA within the group studied and showed how it adversely affects the performance in some of the subjects. It also showed the lack of a systematic use of the different strategies to deal with the MPA.

The Relationship of Parental Attachment, Peer Attachment, and Self-Concept to the Adjustment of First-Year College Students

Selby, Jeanne Costello 08 1900 (has links)
The transition to college is usually the first time many late adolescents live apart from their parents for an extended period, making it an important developmental task (Kenny, 1987) that requires a variety of adaptational resources. Bowlby's (1969/1982, 1973, 1980) attachment theory has been refined by Kenny and Rice (1995) to explain how internal working models of late adolescents are the bases of the adaptational resources that determine the quality of adjustment to college. The Kenny and Rice model may be interpreted to suggest that external resources should include relationships with parents and friends, while internal resources can include self-concept. According to the authors, "these resources are assumed to moderate or buffer the effects of developmental challenges and stressful events on adjustment" (p.437). The purpose of the present study was to extend and further clarify the ways that quality attachment relationships and positive self-concept conjointly may promote healthy adaptation in the college milieu. In particular, the present study examined the influence of self-concept as a mediating variable with respect to attachment and healthy adjustment to college. Students from Freshman Psychology classes completed measures to assess their attachment relationships with each parent, their attachment relationships with peers, their level of self-concept, and their perceived adaptation to college. These measures were completed by students of traditional age (ages 18-20) within the first year of starting college. The results of the study indicate that: 1) a relationship exists between attachment and self-concept; 2) attachment is associated with college adjustment; 3) self-concept is related to college adjustment, and functions as a mediator variable between attachment and college adjustment; 4) there were no gender effects in the levels of mother or father attachment, and females reported higher levels of peer attachment; and 5) there were no gender effects in overall levels self-concept, but females reported higher levels of Moral Self-Concept.

The Evolution of the Ride Cymbal Pattern from 1917 to 1941: An Historical and Critical Analysis

Clark, Colleen (Musician) 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to provide a historiographical and musical analysis examining the jazz ride cymbal pattern, from its inception on woodblock, small accessory cymbals, hand cymbal mechanisms and brushes through what becomes known as the modern-day ride cymbal pattern. This research examines a wide array of drummers and bandleaders, with the objective of identifying the earliest recordings of this important addition to jazz drumming, and popular music history while analyzing the ride cymbal pattern's evolution through definitive recordings. The study begins with the earliest known recordings that clearly display the pattern as it is played on any of the instruments mentioned above. The research concludes with the jam sessions of the early 1940s at Minton's Playhouse, where the pioneer of bebop drumming, Kenny Clarke, experimented with altering the pattern. At this point, the pattern reach its final level of maturity and has since experienced no subsequent major modification. The historical and geographical analysis uses relevant literature from the field of jazz history in order to interpret and evaluate the impact of the the overall trajectory of the music and players. By surveying newspaper and magazine articles, archival interviews, and photographic sources, combined with audio and film analysis, it is clear that drummers navigated a path to the maturation of the pattern.

Straws in the wind: early epidemics of Poliomyelitis in Johannesburg, 1918-1945

Wade, Mary Margaret 31 December 2006 (has links)
This thesis offers a detailed account of early polio epidemics (between 1918 and 1945) in Johannesburg, where the disease was particularly severe. At this time, little was known about the poliovirus, and such limited understanding affected the public health and medical initiatives taken during this period. These actions are highlighted in the thesis, along with the responses of the media and lay public to the disease. The effect of war on the management of the disease is also examined, as it siphoned off vital medical personnel and jeopardised disease control. It also lent an emotional overlay to the way the disease was perceived, as `battle' rhetoric became the parlance used against polio, which was personified as the `enemy' of innocent children who were disabled at the whim of the virus. The epidemic of 1944-1945 was the first to be systematically investigated, by Dr James Gear as part of his groundbreaking polio research; he later became part of an international team of researchers who contributed to the development of a prophylactic vaccine within a decade of this epidemic. / History / M.A. (History)

"Worlds Beyond": A Stylistic Analysis of Collage in the Music of Daniel Schnyder as a Universal Model for the Bass Trombone Repertoire

Norton, Colby 08 1900 (has links)
The modern trombone player can experience a variety of styles on any given day. There is a need for the ability to switch between a plethora of styles ranging from avant-garde pieces to many forms of popular music to masterworks of the symphonic repertoire. It is the responsibility of the musician (performer or educator) to be familiar with all music due to global access via the internet. There is a responsibility to properly perform and respect music as more composers are beginning to blend different styles, genres, idioms, and cultures within the same composition. Daniel Schnyder is a prominent continuation of this style of musical collage that began with composers such as George Rochberg, Luciano Berio, Bernd Alois Zimmermann, and Charles Ives. The goal of this project is to analyze the stylistic saturation of Daniel Schnyder's Worlds Beyond Suite, focusing on performance and stylistic analysis to aid in an informed performance. This project will highlight the flexibility required by modern trombonists to perform with a deeper understanding of music in multiple styles, as the blending, juxtaposing, and superimposition of style is the universal future of music.
