The Role of Texts in the Formation of the Geluk School in Tibet during the Mid-Fourteenth and Fifteenth Centuries

The dissertation delineates how the writings compiled in The Collected Works (Gsung ’bum) of Jey Tsongkhapa Lobzang Drakpa (1357–1419), the founder of the Geluk School of Tibetan Buddhism, constitute the centrality of the Geluk thought and philosophy and have contributed towards the school’s formation. It details how the texts have played a prominent role in establishing doctrinal authority, defining philosophical boundaries, postulating intellectual identity, and reorienting monastic education for the school. These texts have also considerably enhanced the intellectual, spiritual, and charismatic authority of Jey Tsongkhapa as a teacher and philosopher. This dissertation bases its approach on the premise that the life and writings of Tsongkhapa define the core identity of the Geluk School and that an explicit rejection of either tantamount to an outright abnegation of its membership. The dissertation begins with a critical retelling of Tibet’s religious history to contextualize the subject. The second chapter presents the culture and practice of life writing in Tibet to inform about the mechanism employed in traditional auto/biographies. Given the enormous attention drawn by the study of Jesus Christ (c. 4 BCE–c. 33 CE) in western academia, the chapter includes a literary review of contemporary studies and research for their emulation in the study of Tibetan hagiographies. The life story of Tsongkhapa is recounted in the third chapter. The fourth chapter details significant historical events that helped recenter Tsongkhapa in the Tibetan religio-cultural landscape. The fifth chapter presents his oeuvre—The Collected Works, the first extensive xylographic work printed in Tibet in the early fifteenth century. It also outlines the volume contents, presents sample texts, and chronicles the history of its publication and printing. The sixth chapter illustrates the centrality of Jey Tsongkhapa’s writings and its integration into the Geluk monastic educational system. The seventh chapter explicates on the topic of textual transmission and demonstrates how the texts were passed down through unbroken lineages to this day. The dissertation concludes with an epilogue and other back matters, including a list of transliteration of names, which are phoneticized in the main body for the ease of reading.

Dynamic sensor deployment in mobile wireless sensor networks using multi-agent krill herd algorithm

A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is a group of spatially dispersed sensors that monitor the physical conditions of the environment and collect data at a central location. Sensor deployment is one of the main design aspects of WSNs as this a ffects network coverage. In general, WSN deployment methods fall into two categories: planned deployment and random deployment. This thesis considers planned sensor deployment of a Mobile Wireless Sensor Network (MWSN), which is defined as selectively deciding the locations of the mobile sensors under the given constraints to optimize the coverage of the network. Metaheuristic algorithms are powerful tools for the modeling and optimization of problems. The Krill Herd Algorithm (KHA) is a new nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithm which can be used to solve the sensor deployment problem. A Multi-Agent System (MAS) is a system that contains multiple interacting agents. These agents are autonomous entities that interact with their environment and direct their activity towards achieving speci c goals. Agents can also learn or use their knowledge to accomplish a mission. Multi-agent systems can solve problems that are very difficult or even impossible for monolithic systems to solve. In this work, a modification of KHA is proposed which incorporates MAS to obtain a Multi-Agent Krill Herd Algorithm (MA-KHA). To test the performance of the proposed method, five benchmark global optimization problems are used. Numerical results are presented which show that MA-KHA performs better than the KHA by finding better solutions. The proposed MA-KHA is also employed to solve the sensor deployment problem. Simulation results are presented which indicate that the agent-agent interactions in MA-KHA improves the WSN coverage in comparison with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the Firefly Algorithm (FA), and the KHA. / Graduate

Methods of teaching adult learners: a comparative study of adult education programmes in Ghana and South Africa

The benefits of effective teaching methods have been well researched and documented. Salient amongst most literature on such benefits is their ability to promote learners’ subject-matter comprehension and their active participation in class activities. Subject-matter and learner participation can be considered key ingredients in promoting effective learning. In adult education, due to the unique characteristics that the learner brings to the learning situation, it behooves the educator to select appropriate methods in promoting learning. By employing appropriate teaching methods, the educator is able to help adult learners achieve the desired learning outcomes. This study therefore sought to comparatively examine the effectiveness of the various teaching methods used by educators in teaching learners in adult education programmes in Ghana and South Africa. The study focused on the National Functional Literacy Programme of Ghana and the Kha Ri Gude Mass Literacy Programme of South Africa. The study was conducted using a qualitative research approach where the multiple case study design was employed. A purposive sample of 152 participants comprising 72 learners and 4 educators each from Ghana and South Africa were selected for the study. The interview schedule, focus group discussion guide and unstructured observation guides were used to elicit data from the participants. The study revealed, amongst other things, that some of the methods employed by the educators in the teaching and learning encounter were ineffective in promoting adult learning in both programmes. The study recommends that methods employed to teach adult learners should help them effectively to make meaning of the various information or events that they are presented with. As a result, teaching moves from the traditional view of transmission to helping learners to reexamine their meaning-making structures. / UNISA / ABET and Youth Development

Tsongkhapa’s Coordination of Sūtra and Tantra: Ascetic Performance, Narrative, and Philosophy in the Creation of the Tibetan Buddhist Self

The dissertation examines the life narrative of Tsongkhapa Losang Dragpa (1357-1419), the influential founder of the Ganden school of Tibetan Buddhism, primarily through the lens of the bodhisattva path to enlightenment, a topic that animates much of Indian Buddhist literature and Tsongkhapa’s own writings. Over the course of five chapters, the dissertation (1) contextualizes Tsongkhapa’s social, political, and historical circumstances, the limiting factors for that narrative; (2) explores the social nature of life narratives themselves, particularly Tibetan Buddhist ones, and the many sources on which Tsongkhapa drew in creating a self in relation to the bodhisattva ideal; (3) analyses the topic of asceticism as a constellation of practices that embody traditional ideals, which the dissertation uniquely relates to both monastic and, perhaps surprisingly, tantric discipline in the construction of a bodhisattva/would-be buddha self; (4) synthesizes several themes within Tsongkhapa’s oeuvre in relation to the bodhisattva path to enlightenment, highlighting the irreducibly social nature of embodied enlightenment; and (5) proposes that Tsongkhapa’s social activities, specifically his so-called Four Great Deeds, instantiate the ideal of the enlightened self’s acting within society, specifically his context of fifteenth-century Central Tibet. The dissertation relies primarily on Tsongkhapa’s brief intellectual autobiography, Excellent Presence, his earliest biography, Haven of Faith, a number of Tsongkhapa’s systematic writings, and a variety of primary and secondary sources that contextualize elements of the historical, sociological, religious, and theoretical analyses presented throughout the five chapters. In biographies of Tibetan Buddhist figures, emphasis on the hagiographic tends to obscure the social, political, and historical contexts in which their subjects act, which in turn tends to reinforce the Weberian notion of Buddhism as an individualist path. Emphasis on individual achievement (simultaneously including yet excluding lineages, practices, philosophical positions, and so on) tends to reinforce the inverse, Foucauldian notion that this is a deliberate attempt to obscure various power struggles that actually define religious actors and institutions. In the case of Tsongkhapa, modern scholarship has tended to present the remarkable success of his Ganden school either to his individual genius in advancing (allegedly) unique philosophical positions or to social facts (e.g., his efforts at monastic reform), political facts (e.g., Phagdru dominance over rival Sakya), and historical facts (e.g., Mongol allegiance to his successors) largely unrelated to his personal charisma, erudite scholarship, or social impact. As a sort of middle way between these extremes, it is possible to locate within these contexts the specific achievements of the individual who is—according to both general Buddhist understanding and contemporary theorists in philosophy, psychology, literary studies, and sociology—deeply socialized. As social documents, life narratives, inclusive of biography and hagiography, function as indices of tradition, just as do practices of monastic and tantric asceticism, all with goals of embodying the principles articulated in the systematic literature within the social, political, and historical contexts to be transcended. This ideal, then, proves to be fully situated within social contexts, and Tsongkhapa’s Four Great Deeds instantiate it in relation to both individual achievements of asceticism and the institutionalization of communal and educational capacities to replicate the processes engendering this ideal, buddhahood. In sum, Tsongkhapa’s life narrative expresses the expectations and ideals of Tibetan Buddhist culture in a way that proves complementary to systematic presentations and to “lived” practices of monastic and tantric asceticism.

De l'école du milieu : transcendance, langage et raison dans la pensée de Wittgenstein, Tsongkhapa et Schopenhauer

L'objectif de ce travail consiste à identifier les apories inhérentes à ce que d'aucuns appellent la postmodernité. L'impasse actuelle résulte, selon nous, d'une fracture du logos dont le corollaire est la montée des monismes dans la pensée occidentale. Cette fracture pose d'énormes problèmes sociaux, éthiques et sotériologiques. Une solution à l'impasse passe par un retour aux sources de la pensée occidentale. Un retour au logos ne peut cependant advenir qu'à travers une philosophie qui, contrairement à certains monismes, ne serait basée ni sur l'objet ni sur le sujet. Il s'agit dans le cadre de ce travail de faire émerger cette « philosophie du milieu », de définir quels sont ses modes d'applications et quels sont ses concepts opératoires, comme le synéchisme. Il appert que, dans ce que Jean-François Lyotard appelle « les sociétés industrielles avancées », deux visions de l'homme s'affrontent, réduisant toutes deux l'expérience de la réalité à un unique élément, qu'il soit corps ou langage. Il résulte de cette dichotomie soit une dévalorisation de la subjectivité soit un scepticisme antirationaliste. Ces monismes tirent une bonne part de leurs fondements théoriques de la pensée de Ludwig Wittgenstein. Or Wittgenstein n'est ni entièrement positiviste ni entièrement relativiste, comme ses successeurs l'ont interprété; sa pensée n'est fondée ni sur l'objet, comme celle des matérialistes, ni sur le sujet, comme celle des relativistes. Sa conception « transcendantale » de l'éthique, concomitante de sa définition de la limite du langage, fait plutôt de ce penseur un dualiste. Malgré son dualisme, de par son association à la pensée d'Arthur Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein participe de plein doit à cette philosophie « du milieu » que nous tentons de définir. Ayant été confronté, essentiellement, aux mêmes apories et aux mêmes impasses sociales quelque cinq siècles avant l'Occident, la société tibétaine sut trouver, au 15e siècle, un juste milieu entre des conceptions monistes réductrices grâce à la philosophie de Tsongkhapa. Dans le cadre d'une réforme tant éthique que philosophique, ce dernier a habilement marié la réflexion sur la nature ultime des phénomènes à des principes de raison et d'empirisme. Son approche, identique à celle préconisée par Platon deux mille ans plus tôt, s'est réclamée du juste milieu entre l'ultime et le conventionnel. En outre, elle offre à terme une sortie de l'impasse engendrée par le matérialisme et le relativisme en formulant une conception unifiée, disons synéchiste, de la réalité. Philosophe très influent il y a un siècle, mais aujourd'hui presque oublié, Arthur Schopenhauer est au cœur de la pensée postmoderne. Ayant exercé une influence déterminante sur Nietzsche, Freud et Wittgenstein, Schopenhauer a introduit dans la pensée occidentale la notion de maya, ou d'illusion du réel, reléguant au second plan le cogito cartésien. Contrairement à ce l'on croit au sujet de sa philosophie de la Volonté, Schopenhauer assigne à la raison un rôle sotériologique essentiel. Sa philosophie, inspirée de celle de Platon et de Kant, se situe « au milieu » entre le sujet et l'objet. Elle maintient que tout dépassement de l'illusion du réel passe par l'attitude éthique qui aspire à mettre un terme à la soif d'existence. Les parallèles avérés entre sa philosophie et le bouddhisme sont d'ailleurs à même de démontrer que l'approche préconisée par Schopenhauer et fondée sur le synéchisme entre le sujet et l'objet est rigoureusement superposable à celle appliquée au Tibet par Tsongkhapa quatre siècles plus tôt. Enfin, afin d'obvier aux apories soulevées par les monismes et les dualismes, le « synéchisme » est proposé comme concept opératoire permettant de sortir de l'impasse postmoderne. Ce concept initialement développé par C. S. Pierce se révèle approprié autant comme méthodologie que comme conception du langage en donnant un sens précis à l'approche du « milieu » fondée sur l'absence d'en-soi des phénomènes subjectifs et objectifs. ______________________________________________________________________________

The influence of cognitive intelligence, emotional intelligence, and personality on job performance: proposing a model for personnel selection

Text in English with abstracts in English, TshiVenda and Afrikaans / This research sought to propose a personnel selection model encompassing the influence of cognitive intelligence, ability emotional intelligence, trait emotional intelligence, and personality on job performance. Using a quantitative cross-sectional research design, the researcher investigated the interrelationships between the variables relevant to the study using a convenience sample of N = 299 that consisted of Zimbabwean supervisory and professionally qualified and experienced specialists of different ages and genders, and from different job tenures, and job types. To get a true picture of the relationships between the predictor and criterion variables, the interaction (moderating) effects between the sociodemographic variables (age, gender, job tenure, and job type) and the predictor variables (cognitive intelligence, ability emotional intelligence, trait emotional intelligence, and personality) in predicting the criterion of job performance were also examined. The researcher used correlational and inferential multivariate statistical analysis (structural equation modelling, regression analyses, and tests for significant mean differences) to test the research hypotheses. The results from the study indicated that cognitive intelligence was the best predictor of job performance, followed by ability emotional intelligence, and then by personality. Trait emotional intelligence could not account for any variance in job performance. The results showed significant interaction effects between personality and job tenure (judging-perceiving personality types) and job types (extraversion-introversion personality types) in predicting job performance. Significant sociodemographic mean differences in the levels of the predictor variables were also identified. The identified predictive powers of the variables, the interaction effects between the identified sociodemographic and the predictor variables in predicting job performance, and the significant sociodemographic mean differences in the levels of predictor variables need to be considered for personnel selection practices in order to understand the nature of variables that may enhance or inhibit job performance.
