Handeln över Kvarken : En studie av sjöhandelsförbindelserna mellan Vasa stad och Västerbotten under perioden 1809-1830

Nilsson, Perry January 2016 (has links)
AbstractThis thesis examines the sea trade between the city of Vasa in Österbotten and the county of Västerbotten in Sweden during the period 1809-1830 and aims to determine how the division of Sweden into two countries in 1809 affected the trade. In order to systematically treat data, a theoretical concept of quantitative network analysis is applied. The primary source material consists of accounts from the custom house in Vasa. The results show that the sea trade had resumed within a year after the Treaty of Fredrikshamn in 1809. The sea trade over Kvarken was predominated by agents from Västerbotten, particularly from Umeå. In 1810, the first boat departed from Umeå to Vasa, a trend which would come to accelerate up to a culmination in 1816 as regards the number of boats and the quantity of goods. The sea trade later experienced a successive decline between 1817 and 1830, which marks the end of the studied period. The agents which travelled over Kvarken were initially peasants, albeit over time these were successively replaced by skippers and other sea-faring professionals. Concerning shipped goods, the study also concludes that the main products shipped from Västerbotten to Vasa were fish and fabrics. Conversely, the main products shipped from Vasa to Västerbotten were cattle and grains.Even though the trade had importance for the Vasa region in terms of supplying important staple goods, the trade with Västerbotten represented just a small percentage of the total goods shipped through Vasa port. The trades swift recovery after the division is partly attributed to the good relations between Sweden and Russia after the Treaty of Fredrikshamn (1809); but also the favorable tariff policy between the two countries. Another contributing factor to the increase in trade between Vasa and Västerbotten at the time may have been the limitation of trade with continental Europe as a result of the ongoing Napoleonic Wars. Life Aquatic / Vatten Liv

Bäckman, Johan January 2013 (has links)
The project is a city located between Umeå and Vasa, it is the most narrow part of the Gulf of Bothnia with only 60 km of open waters. I wanted to investigate existing possibilities with a city that exploits its location. So I designed an offshore port city that builds itself and grows. Why? The megastructures of the 60’s but also contemporary ones were often planned to give a technical solution to a certain problem. These problems whether it’s housing shortage or climate change are still current and the solutions as well. This is why I wanted to use my structure as a tool to test and reflect about these concepts of living. A member of the jury critically compared me to a magpie that had picked the silver of my references, but what he didn’t understand was that I had picked the silver to analyze it in my fictional world. I made the analysis by imagining inhabitants that through their mind and soul reflected on life in a module and etc.

Innovation in Swedish Space Industry : A case study on how to attract new actors in the space sector

Sakr, Mohamed, Åkesson, Martin January 2022 (has links)
Abstract Space has always pushed humanity further to acknowledge its existence and what was once mere speculation through observation, today we have reached a climax in fully understanding its reach and its potential for society. Through the utilization of technological advancements, people, countries, and organizations are starting to understand the capacity in utilizing our resources to create and develop fundamental applications that can create positive effects in our environment, society, and economy. The space industry is continuously evolving pushing forth a new age in space technology, a revolutionary space race. This transitory phase from old space and new space has furthered global competition and has created a new path for innovative practices that demand progression to remain sustainable and competitive in the present global environment. Which made us interested in exploring the following research question: How do new entrants in the high-technology space industry navigate the transition from old space to new space? Our thesis aims in understanding this transitory phase from old space and new space. To satisfactory answer our research question we selectively focus on Sweden’s space industry and its relative organizations and businesses. Through the evaluation of smalland medium sized organizations that exist in Sweden’s current space ecosystem, we aim to understand this evolutionary shift in innovative practices, collaborative efforts, and which factors contribute to increasing new entrants in what was once deemed a closed system. Therefore, fulfilling a research gap in academic literature by shedding light on new practices from a stakeholder’s perspective in the creation and diffusion of knowledge, networks, and motivational factors that form opportunities within existing platforms in the space industry that are essential and fundamental to the creation of progressive innovation ecosystems.  To conclude, this thesis contributes with an understanding of the historic, current and future possibilities for small and medium sized organisations within the space sector in Sweden. We explore the current ecosystem by interviewing SMEs that have embraced the opportunities that exist and with industry experts who have valuable insights to offer. We hope that with this thesis more individuals gain insight in the current restraints that new entrants are met with and how to effectively reduce those.  Key words: New space, Old space, Innovation, Ecosystem, Motivation, Platforms, Stakeholder, Opportunity forming / Business Administration
