Syftet med detta arbete är att skapa en gemensam mötesplats för att föra samman människor och skapa en gemenskap i storstaden där alla är välkomna. En plats som möjliggör nya arbeten, nya bostäder och nya platser för aktiviteter i form av en satellitstad vid namn Klara.Projektet undersöker ett alternativ till ABC-staden i centrala Stockholm, influerad av megastrukturer i brutalistisk anda.Platsen är Klara Mälarstrand och har valts för att utvidga huvudstaden inom Stockholms gränser och använda den oanvända platsen.Klara Mälarstrand är en grov miljö som saknar grönområden trots att det är ett av de bästa lägena i Stockholm, alldeles intill Riddarfjärden. / The purpose of this work is to create a mutual place to bring people together and create solidarity in the big city where everyone is welcome. A place that opens up for new jobs, new housing and new places for activities in the form of a satellite city called Klara.The project investigates an alternative to the ABC city in central Stockholm, influenced by megastructures in a brutalistic spirit. The site is Klara Mälarstrand and has been chosen to expand the capital within Stockholm’s borders and to use the unused site. Klara Mälarstrand has a rough environment that lacks green areas even though it is one of the best locations in Stockholm, right next to Riddarfjärden.

Lagos, Nigeria is a city of rapidly shifting conditions and perpetual crises with issues of over population, pollution, limited circulation, waste management, density, poverty, and social disparity. These conditions have resulted in the proliferation of slum settlements along the coastal edges of the megacity. However, the radical conditions of Lagos promote new solutions for the city. Waste provides the mass for coastal expansion, and defense from sea-rise. Expansion of the coastline provides new territories for the growth of slums. Geometry can maximize efficiency and minimize contamination. P.L.A.T.F.O.R.M., makes use of the processes associated with Lagos waste management and the expansion of the slums, while mitigating the harmful effects of contamination and providing a defensive barrier against sea-level rise.

Projektet är en stad som ligger mellan Umeå och Vasa (Finland), det är den smalaste delen av Bottniska viken med bara ca 60 km öppet hav. Jag ville undersöka vad det fanns för möjligheter med en stad som utnyttjar sitt läge. Så jag planerade en offshore hamnstad som bygger sig själv och sprider sig. Varför? 60-talets men även samtida megastrukturer planerades ofta för att ge en teknisk lösning på ett visst problem. De här problemen vare sig det är bostadsbrist eller klimatförändring är fortfarande aktuella och lösningarna likaså. Därför ville jag använda min struktur som ett redskap för att testa och reflektera kring dessa idéer för boende. En jurymedlem jämförde mig kritiskt vid en skata som plockat silvret från mina referenser, men det han inte förstod var att jag plockade silvret just för att i min fiktiva värld analysera det. Analysen gjorde jag genom att hitta på invånare som med sinne och själ fick reflektera kring livet i en modul och etc. / The project is a city located between Umeå and Vasa, it is the most narrow part of the Gulf of Bothnia with only 60 km of open waters. I wanted to investigate existing possibilities with a city that exploits its location. So I designed an offshore port city that builds itself and grows. Why? The megastructures of the 60’s but also contemporary ones were often planned to give a technical solution to a certain problem. These problems whether it’s housing shortage or climate change are still current and the solutions as well. This is why I wanted to use my structure as a tool to test and reflect about these concepts of living. A member of the jury critically compared me to a magpie that had picked the silver of my references, but what he didn’t understand was that I had picked the silver to analyze it in my fictional world. I made the analysis by imagining inhabitants that through their mind and soul reflected on life in a module and etc.

Land is our planet’s scarcest resource. With all the combined advances in our civilizations and their respective technologies, we have yet as a society to fully understand our precarious situation within our diminishing livable planetary surface. We also live today within a world in constant stages of change. With rapid population growth on a global scale, and its resulting increases in urban density, our available usable living space is greatly becoming smaller and our lives more crowded and condensed. Following upon our urban centers, this thesis aims at exploring the effects of these global phenomena of overcrowding and overpopulation especially within the time remaining before we, as part of a developed society, witness the ground below our feet gradually disappear. Montreal City is one developed world urban center ready to receive this next evolutionary step in urban growth and it is historically no stranger to architectural experimentation. Expanding the city’s infrastructures through the third dimension will allow greater freedom in the urban sculpture of this future face of our growing urban worlds. This will be the insertion of a new population-absorbing building and urban typology. This will be the return of the megastructure and the revival of an old visionary architectural language that will advance the exploration of the impact of growth and urban concentration.

As a result of changes in the society, such as the increasing mobility, increasing spatial demandindgness of inhabitants and the onset of digital technologies, the architects and urbanists have been searching for new ways of urban housing developments. One of these ways is densification, i.e. an intensive use of the urban space. An intensive urban structure uses up the potential of a place to its maximum, solves several issues simultaneously and is a functional hybrid, the home of potential suburbanizers and a place of social contacts. It comes from the efforts to solve the particular issue of an over-populated, collapsing city. The aim of the thesis is to show contemporary approaches to the issue of intensive urban structures and to map out both the built and unbuilt projects. The thesis creates a system of their categorization and taxonomy. There is always a mixture of functions in play from the functional perspective. One can distinguish five categories according to the spacial conception. These categories are as follows: multiplicity, porousness, hybridity, connectivity and verticality. The public and semi-public spaces thus move to the higher levels of the city, into the city level, urban balcony or the hybrid landscape. The built projects usually tend to be impulses, in relation to the original city, to develop and revitalize the devastated city areas, brownfields, even urban sprawls. Based on the findings of this thesis, diploma and pre-diploma project assignments have been created at the architecture department at FAST VUT in Brno and the approaches to the issue have been tested in the pedagogical process. The survey in the second part of the thesis looks for the answer to the question of whether the potential inhabitants of an intensive urban structure exist, and who these people might be.
