Evaluation Of State Owned Indigenous Coal Fired Power Plants Including Coal ReservesGuler, Mehmet 01 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Fossil fuels has preserved their importance in gradually increasing production and consumption of both energy and electricity of the world. Asia, especially China and India, has arisen new actors of the sector.
Energy and electricity consumption of Turkey has also increased in parallel with her economic development, but due to her limited resources, she has become more and more energy dependent in order to meet her growing demand.
Although hard coal is only found around Zonguldak region, with its abundant and widely spread reserves, Turkey ranked world&rsquo / s third place in lignite production in 2008. Having low calorific value together with high ash and moisture content, most of lignites extracted is being consumed in thermic power plants located near those reserves.
In the first two chapters of this study, energy in the world and Turkey will be considered seperately, then coal resources in Turkey will be analysed in the next coming chapter. Indirect and direct greenhouse emissions presented to the UNFCCC will be handled in the fifth chapter
In the last chapter, first past and present performances of all indigenous coal fired power plants will be analysed, then after projecting their generation and fuel needs, they are evaluated considering with the reserves they are located. Finally, at the end of decomissioning of those power plants, remaining reserves will be re-evaluated and additional new units will be proposed accordingly.

Thermoelectric Cooling Of A Pulsed Mode 1064 Nm Diode Pumped Nd:yag LaserYuksel, Yuksel 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Since most of the energy input is converted to thermal energy in laser applications,
the proper thermal management of laser systems is an important issue. Maintaining
the laser diode and crystal temperature distributions in a narrow range during the
operation is the most crucial requirement for the cooling of a laser system.
In the present study, thermoelectric cooling (TEC) of a 1064 nm wavelength diode
pumped laser source is investigated both experimentally and numerically.
During the heat removal process, the thermal resistance through and between the
materials, the proper integration of the TEC assembly, and the heat sink efficiency
become important. For the aim of evaluating and further improving the system
performance, various assembly configurations, highly conductive components,
efficient interface materials and heat sink alternatives are considered.
Several experiments are conducted during the system development stage, and parallel
numerical simulations are performed both for comparison and also for providing
valuable input for the system design. Results of the experiments and the simulations
agree well with each other.
As the laser device works in the transient regime, the experiments and the
simulations are also implemented in this regime.
In the final part of the study, the experiments are performed under the actual device
working conditions. It is proved that with the designed TEC module and the copper
heat sink system, the laser device can operate longer than the required operational
time successfully.

X-ray And Optical Observations Of High Mass X-ray BinariesBeklen, Elif 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, X-ray and optical observations of accretion powered pulsars are presented.
By using archival RXTE observations we work on the X-ray spectral and pulse timing
analysis of 4U 1538-52, 4U 1907+09, SMC X-1 to have more detailed information about their orbital and spin parameters.
For 4U 1538-52 and SMC X-1, we determined new orbital epochs.
By using long term pulse history of 4U 1907+09, we were able to work spin-down trend of the system and also calculate the change in the spin-down rate.
Using Fermi/GBM observations we can monitor bright accreting pulsar systems. We are producing long term
histories of pulse frequency and
flux of 20 continuosly monitoring systems.
Adding Swift/BAT observations to GBM observations, for 4U 1626-67, we did reveal the characteristics belong to spin-down trend before and
spin-up behaviour after torque reversal seen in 2008 February.
Two newly discovered IGRJ06074+2205 and IGRJ01583+6713 sources are identified as X-ray binary systems and we found
parameters of them like distance, magnitudes, by using both optical photometric and spectroscopic observations.

Adaptability Of Generative Algorithms: A Means To Sustaining The Dynamic Design ProcessesDamdere, Ekin 01 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is an investigation focusing on the adaptability of generative systems in a
dynamic design problem, where the problem definition changes according to the
changing conditions of the environment and transforming needs of the architectural
space. This thesis, instead of discussing the dynamicity of the design processes,
investigates the use of an adaptable generative system in a case-specific dynamic
design problem to sustain its changing problem definitions. The research mainly
looks into the potentials of generative systems in terms of adaptability and develops
a generative system that is able to transform its structure in accordance with the
dynamic constraints of a complex design process.

Changing Relationship Between Urban And Rural: The Observed Features Of New Rurality In Rural AreasOzdirek, Sibel 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
The new changes such as developments in transportation and communication technology, globalization of markets, intensification of flow of information, ideas and innovations since the 1980s have helped to increase the interaction between urban and rural and this process have had very important impact on the resemblance process of rural areas to urban areas with some characteristics, vice versa. Therefore the process have had an effect on the blurring strict distinction between urban and rural in worldwide.
The new rurality approach has been main approach in the thesis that has tried to explain the new features of rural areas. It has focused on what has been happenning in rural areas and drawn attention to changes in rural areas which was previously ignored or overemphasized. The approach took five main changing features of rural areas as central focus which were non-farm activities, role of women, entrepreneurship, in-migration, division of labour and also urban-rural interaction. Therefore, the observed changes caused to draw attention to the question of is rural still the opposite of urban? In this respect, the effects of the increased relationships between urban and rural on rural areas in terms of getting new characteristics that new rurality approach explained were investigated by handling two case studies / Gedelek and Kusç / uali Villages in Turkey.

Neo- And Seismo-tectonic Characteristics Of The Yenigediz (kutahya) AreaGurboga, Sule 01 December 2011 (has links) (PDF)
Erdogmus-Yenigediz graben is one of the major structural elements of
Aksehir-Simav Fault System (ASFS), which is a major extensional
structure in the southwestern Anatolian extensional neotectonic
province (SWAEP). It is about 6-10-km-wide, 15-km-long and
approximately ENE-trending and is actively growing structure as
indicated by the 1970.03.28 (Mw= 7.2) Gediz earthquake.
The graben is characterized by two distinct units, separated by an
angular unconformity: (i) Miocene-middle Pliocene Arica formation and
(ii) Plio Quaternary Erdogmus formation. The former unit commences
with a basal conglomerate above the basement rocks and is composed
mainly of coal-bearing continental and lacustrine sediments with lava
flows and pyroclastics, particularly common in the middle parts of the
sequence. The volcanics are dated at 18.4 ± / 0.1 Ma (Ar-Ar mica ages).
They record evidence for two deformation phases as suggested by twosets of overprinting slickenlines, intense folding, thrust and strike-slip
faulting. The Erdogmus formation commences with terrace
conglomerates and is composed mainly of travertines, older and
younger alluvial deposits, fan-apron sediments and the recent axial
graben floor sediments.
Kinematic analysis of the graben-bounding normal faults, growth faults
within the graben-infill and those deforming the sediments are
consistent with three distinct phases of deformation: (i) Miocene middle
Pliocene extensional phase, (ii) interveining NE SW contractional phase
and (iii) Plio-Quaternary extensional phase. The data also suggests a
distributed stress field and a multi-directional recent extension in
predominantly NNE&ndash / SSW, E&ndash / W and NE&ndash / SW directions. This is also
consistent with available focal mechanism solutions for the region.
The graben therefore has an episodic evolutionary history with two
extensional phases and an intervening short-term contraction, as
described in many different parts of the SWAEP. The latter phase of
extension is considered as the part of Neotectonic regime, which
therefore commenced by the Late Pliocene.

The Evolution And Evaluation Of The Fenaket Megaroid Dwellings: A Seasonal Hamlet In Western Bozburun PeninsulaOzberk, Banu 01 May 2004 (has links) (PDF)
When rural settlements are examined in Anatolia, an evolution process from the prehistoric times could be observed rather than a radical change, about the building architecture and settlement pattern qualities. However, it is, in fact, a chronic discussion subject between the authorities that this case is a result of an inheritance of a building tradition from the predecessors to successors of the society or a reproduction of the similar spatial fiction after the same factors and inputs.
The case of Fenaket rural settlement, which is situated at the western part of the Bozburun peninsula, maintains parallel characteristics, and stays within the limits of this discussion, by its vernacular architecture and spatial arrangement.
The purpose of this research is to analyze and to document the vernacular dwellings and settlement pattern of abandoned Fenaket Village / to identify the evolution and the evaluation process of the megaroid houses of Fenaket / and to develop the means for sustaining this traditional example.

Creation Of The Commercial Node: Sogutozu, AnkaraBarbaros, Yavuz Selim 01 February 2005 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of the study is to discuss and determine the property relations, development patterns and major agents at Sö / gü / tö / zü / region in Ankara, where is claimed to be new central business node, developing with ultimate architectural, constructional efforts and highly sophisticated land speculations.
Rapid transformation in characteristic of Sö / gü / tö / zü / region from agricultural use to commercial uses at twenty years does not only display contemporary space creation efforts, but also shows tendencies of private entrepreneurs in Ankara. Increasing commercial activities on the land and introduce of new modes of interaction patterns, which are related with the rise of private property in neo-liberal era after 1980, also brings out changing protocols on property ownership patterns.
In this context, Sö / gü / tö / zü / case is related with discourses about repositioning of private initiatives on urban issues. However this becomes critical, when reconsidering, the capital city was designed to be modern cradle of republic by the public comprehensive planning initiatives. The current situation at the region is bringing new sets of confronting concepts between comprehensive planning approaches and property capital&rsquo / s space creation methods.
Figuring out basics of space creation agencies and achieving appropriate design guidelines at Sö / gü / tö / zü / may not only provide efficient well-growth of the specific sector of the city, but also bring out alternative solutions to achieve urban compromise in Ankara. For that reason, determinations on property formation, physical developments at Sö / gü / tö / zü / should be studied in historical context.
