The Form of No-Form: Reconstructing Huineng in Two Paintings by Liang Kai

Xie, Kun 06 September 2017 (has links)
The authenticity and interpretation of two Sixth Patriarch paintings, traditionally attributed to Liang Kai, have long been debated by critical scholars. Because of the lack of inscriptions on the paintings to indicate the identity of the depicted figure, the association of him with the Sixth Patriarch of Zen Buddhism, Huineng, has shed much enigmatic light onto the decipherment of these two paintings’ motifs. While historical and literal traditions of Huineng in Zen Buddhism provide no conspicuous references, Zen’s art tradition, on the other hand, provides a more fascinating reading of the Sixth Patriarch paintings by formulating and reconstructing a paradigmatic figure of Huineng and Zen romanticism without restricting itself to historical and literal accuracy.

Yick, Charles H., Hong, Frederick H. 01 January 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The following pages comprise a translation of the whose sanskrit title was presumably the apramanartha sutra from the 'Yuan' Edition of 1290 A.D., together with an introduction by liu Ch'iu . It was first translated from the sanskrit into Chinese by Dharmagstayadas, a Buddhist monk from North Central India, with the help of Hui Piao, In 485 A.D. La the Wu Tang mountains. The Sanskrit version is not avallable, while there are known to be four Chinese editions of the sutra. They are the (Kao-Ll RAtston 1115 A.D.), 2舊宋本 (the Old Sung Idition 1104-1148 A.D.), (the Yuan Edition 1290 A.D.), and the Ming Idition 1601 A,D.). Although the pre- sent translation was based on the Yuas text, with which the translators have been faniliar for many years, 1t has been compared throughout with the Kao-Ii Idition (Taisbo 276), and an appendix of the variations is added at the end.

Smoke and Mirrors: Buddhist Conceptions of Mind and Emptiness in Xiao Gang's

Elford, Christopher 18 August 2015 (has links)
The Liang dynasty poet Xiao Gang’s “poems on things” (yongwu shi) have traditionally been read as shallow, overwrought descriptions of palace life devoid of the allegorical dimensions that were thought to ennoble the genre. This thesis argues that the figurative dimensions of these supposedly non-figurative poems must be understood in the context of the profound influence Buddhism and Buddhist thought had on Xiao Gang’s conceptions of literary practice. Through close readings of six “poems on things,” I demonstrate that Xiao Gang’s use of descriptive language doubles as an exploration of Buddhist concepts of sensuous reality, emptiness, and dependent co-arising. By exploring Xiao Gang’s thematization of abstract Buddhist philosophical concepts in the traditionally Confucian genre of the yongwu shi, I suggest that the impact of Buddhist ideas on Chinese figurative modes of poetic meaning was more profound than scholars of this period have previously suggested.

Utilitarian Thinkers in Two Worlds:

Li, Cundao January 2022 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Sarah Gwyneth Ross / This study investigates the political thoughts of two thinkers, Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) from Renaissance Italy and Chen Liang (1143-1194) from Song China. Both thinkers argue against the popular of moral philosophy in state politics. They tried to use the idea of consequentialism, statecraft, and public interest to create their own utilitarian philosophy. This micro-comparison study will parallel two thinkers’ views on history, politics, and military in a similar historical context. These views are essential to the modernization of two civilizations. / Thesis (MA) — Boston College, 2022. / Submitted to: Boston College.
