Feeling Good Around the Globe : How to Compare Wellbeing among Populations

Wellbeing may be the most important feeling able to experience by a person. The research concerning wellbeing has traditionally been focused on psychological wellbeing, yet how wellbeing of populations can be estimated and compared remains unclear. This study proposes a method of measuring wellbeing by keeping to the essence of it as being a subjective feeling. It adopts the rather common term of subjective wellbeing (SWB) and identifies two important aspects of SWB; happiness and life satisfaction. These aspects of life are part of the questionnaires used in many multinational survey studies, including the World Value Survey (WVS). With data from these surveys, SWB can be compared between populations based on subjective survey answers from individuals. The paper tests this approach by using results of the WVS and performing a statistical analysis comparing SWB between cultures. Evaluation of the results leads to the conclusion that, by means of happiness and life satisfaction, a not complete, but at least reasonable operational measurement of SWB is obtained.

Given the positive benefits of physical activity, workplaces have made many attempts to increase physical activity levels of sedentary employees, typically through the use of an exercise intervention. The main purpose of the present research was to investigate whether the simple act of supplying employees engaged primarily in sedentary office-type work, who were intent on becoming physically active, with a tool capable of measuring walking activity (a pedometer) would enhance their physical activity levels over an eight-week period. As predicted, those who received a pedometer reported a significant increase in physical activity from Time 1 to Time 2, while those who did not reported no change. Furthermore, changes in physical activity levels were found to be negatively correlated with perceived barriers to physical activity at Time 1 and also with changes in perceived barriers over the eight-week period. These findings offer a simple and cost-effective alternative to traditional exercise interventions and highlight the importance of reducing barriers to physical activity to increase success when implementing future physical activity initiatives. No relationships between changes to physical activity and life satisfaction, job satisfaction or work-related stress were found. Implications of these results and suggestions for future research are discussed.

Consequences of stroke : aspects of impairments, disabilities and life satisfaction : with special emphasis on perception and on occupational therapy

Perceptual and motor functions and self-care ability after stroke were assessed within two weeks (n:109; mean age 69±10) and 4-6 years (n:75;70±9) after admission to a non-intensive care stroke unit. Sixty-two of the long-term stroke survivors reported on their life satisfaction (7 items) as experienced (in retrospect) before the stroke and at the time of the investigation. Perceptual functions and actual levels of life satisfaction were registered in 60 clinically healthy subjects aged about 60 or about 80 years. Both early on and late after stroke the 16 items of perceptual function were clearly grouped into two factors, which neatly fitted an ecological perceptual concept. One factor characterized low-order and the other higher-order perception. Impairments of low-order perception occurred for about 10% of the patients, whether investigated early or late after stroke. No one among the reference populations had such impairments. Higher-order perceptual impairments prevailed in 60% early on and in 57% late after stroke and were often more pronounced than those occurring in the reference populations, among whom 35% of the 60 year olds and significantly more - 77% - of the 80 year olds had such impairments. Hence, perceptual impairments are common after stroke, but slight age-dependent reductions should be considered when higher-order perceptual function is assessed and treated after stroke. Together with motor function, which was impaired in 52% of the early and 36% of the late stroke samples, higher-order perceptual function and to a limited extent low-order perception could predict the level of self-care ability in 70% and 62% of the early and late samples, respectively. Whereas levels of global and of domain specific variables of life satisfaction were similar in the two reference populations, the stroke had lead to a reduction in life satisfaction for 61% of the long-term survivors. Reductions were particularly pronounced for global life satisfaction and for satisfaction with leisure and sexuality. Although significantly associated with motor impairment and self-care disability, these reductions could not be attributed only to impairments and disability. Livstillfredsställelse : Föränderlig på grund av exponering för negativ respektive positiv information?

Livstillfredsställelse är vår kognitiva bedömning av vårt liv. Studier har visat att affekter påverkar vår kognition, samtidigt ses livstillfredsställelse som en stabil disposition. Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka om vår bedömning av vår livstillfredsställelse tillfälligt förändras efter att ha exponerats för negativ respektive positiv information. Hypotesen var att vi uppskattar vår livstillfredsställelse olika högt beroende på om vi exponeras för negativ eller positiv infomation. Satisfaction With Life Scale delades ut till 50 studenter på en högskola efter exponering av negativ respektive positiv information under en föreläsning. Resultatet visade att det inte fanns någon statistiskt signifikant skillnad mellan negativ och positiv information med avseende på livstillfredsställelse. An individual has the ability to project feelings and emotions onto someone else, to the extent that the other person reacts to them, whether in a similar or opposite manner. These are known as crossover effects. Crossover research investigates the influential relationship and behavioural changes between partners. It sheds light on the occurrence of similar reactions that develop across work and home domains because of interpersonal relations between partners. However, previous crossover research primarily focused on negative symptoms, disregarding the positive. This one-sided approach caused a disparity in crossover research, because one can only gain a holistic understanding of the significance and effects of working if research is extended to include positive aspects. The general objective of this study was to test a structural model of job resources, work engagement and life satisfaction, and to determine the crossover effects of work engagement and life satisfaction among dual-earner parents in South Africa. A cross-sectional survey design was used. A convenience sample of 125 couples (N = 250) was taken in the North West and Gauteng Provinces. A job resources questionnaire, the 'Utrecht Work Engagement Scale' (UWES) and the 'Satisfaction with Life Scale' (SWLS) were administered. Cronbach alpha coefficients, Pearson product-moment correlations, and structural equation modelling were used to analyse the data. Results indicated positive relationships between job resources (autonomy, support and development), work engagement and life satisfaction for both partners. Job resources explained variances of 62% for males and 72% for females in work engagement. A variance of 12% with regard to life satisfaction of males was explained by their work engagement, whilst a combination of female work engagement and their spouse's life satisfaction explained 10% of the variance in female life satisfaction. Unfortunately, expectations about crossover effects of work engagement between partners were not met. The final structural model only confirmed a crossover effect of life satisfaction between partners from male to female. Does Life Satisfaction Explain Body Mass Index? Policy Implications of Subjective Wellbeing in Obesity Interventions

Recently, subjective wellbeing, or more popularly, happiness and life satisfaction, have received growing interest from social scientists, policy makers, and the public alike. This thesis applies Wellbeing, Self-determination, and Social Cognitive theories, and investigates the role of subjective wellbeing for obesity. The main methodology is multivariate regression with ordinary least square, Logit, and two-stage least square estimators. The data are from the Canadian Community Health Survey, 2010. Results show that subjective wellbeing has negative, independent impact on body mass index (BMI) and on the probability of being obese after controlling for the conventionally studied determinants of obesity like age, gender, income, and education. The study contributes to the literature on obesity and suggests possible policy interventions on obesity from the perspective of subjective wellbeing.
