Identity, Formation, Transformation: The Liturgical Movement of the Twentieth Century and the Liturgical Reform Efforts of New Skete MonasteryRegule, Teva L. January 2017 (has links)
Thesis advisor: John F. Baldovin / The Liturgical Movement of the twentieth century had a great impact on the liturgical life of much of Western Christianity, particularly Roman Catholicism and mainline Protestantism. Many of the early pioneers of this movement drew inspiration for their efforts from the liturgical forms and theology of the Christian East, primarily from late antiquity (i.e. third to eighth centuries). The question is, “Were the Eastern Christian Churches that trace much of their liturgical expression to this period themselves affected by this movement?” At first glance, the answer might appear to be negative. However, this dissertation aims to show that the Liturgical Movement did have an influence in some quarters of the Eastern Christian Church. In particular, it analyzes one community’s attempt to adapt the scholarship and principles of the movement to Eastern Christian worship, specifically focusing on the liturgical reform efforts of New Skete Monastery, a community of Eastern Orthodox monastics located in upstate New York. The dissertation begins with a discussion of the meaning of reform and an historical overview of the scholarship and principles of the Liturgical Movement in both the Christian West and East, focusing primarily on those aspects that will become relevant to the future liturgical reform efforts of New Skete. It then introduces the communities of New Skete, including a brief history of the communities, how they understand liturgy and the place it has in their lives, how they understand liturgical reform, why they think such reform is necessary, their principles of reform, and how they understand the authority for their reform. The bulk of the dissertation chronicles the liturgical reform efforts of the community over their fifty-year history for the communal services of the monastery and analyzes them in detail. Since the study of liturgy is not just textual, this dissertation also includes a presentation and cursory analysis of the architecture of the worship space and its iconic program, the calendar of saints, the music of the service, and other performative aspects of the celebration. Previous issue date: 2013-06-04 / In this paper we aim to show the Liturgical Year as an educational journey of faith. The
reform of Second Vatican Council considered the liturgy as living the faith, the example of the
first christian communities. From Sacrosanctum Concilium, the Liturgical Year is organized to
contribute to the spiritual transformation of the faithful. Starting time sensitive signal
underlying pedagogy of the Liturgical Year, we sought to clarify his theological virtue, since,
through him, they remember the mysteries present in the Liturgical Year. During the literature
review sought to explore the theology of the Liturgical Year and their implications in the
context of liturgical reform. We identified as key participation as primary substrate of faith,
and propose methodological suggestions so that participation can be contemplated in the
mysteries that the Liturgical Year presents and have resonance in the concrete life of faith

reforma do Concílio Vaticano II considerou a liturgia como vivência da fé, a exemplo das
primeiras comunidades cristãs. A partir da Sacrosanctum Concilium, o Ano Litúrgico é
organizado de modo a contribuir para a transformação espiritual dos fiéis. Partindo do
tempo, sinal sensível que fundamenta a pedagogia do Ano Litúrgico, buscou-se explicitar
sua força teológica, uma vez que, por meio dele, recordam-se os mistérios presentes no Ano
Litúrgico. Ao longo do levantamento bibliográfico procurou-se explorar a teologia do Ano

Missa chrismatis and Its Changes in the Twentieth Century: A Comparison of Changes in Liturgy and Theology. Missa Chrismatis (Chrism Mass) is a Mass that the bishop celebrates in the Holy Week, together with his priests, which is a sign of mutual unity. During this Mass, the priests renew their priestly vows and the bishop consecrates the oil of catechumens, the oil of the sick and the chrism oil. The ceremony underwent several changes over the past century. These are reflected also in the theology, expressed in the liturgy by emphasizing of certain elements. The major reforms of the liturgy of the Mass took place in several stages in the 50`s, 60`s and 70`s of the 20th century. First, the thesis follows the basics and reasons for the use of oils in the liturgy of the Catholic Church in the context of Easter and then the historical development of the Mass, in which the oils are consecrated. Also it clearly compares the progress of the Missa chrismatis liturgy and captures differences in the liturgical texts and texts of the rite of benediction of oils in the various phases of the reform of the twentieth century. När normkritik blir normerande : En queerteologisk kritik av feministiskteologisk förståelse av betydelsen av kön i talet om GudHilariusson, Alma Ottilia Tilly January 2024 (has links)
A major motivation for this thesis is the creation of an exchange between the resources of the queer theology of the 2020s and the feminist liturgical movement in the 1990s, specifically regarding the theological consequences of the intersection of theologies of gender/sex with talk to and about God in the context of inclusive liturgical reform work. This thesis conducts an analysis of the discourse regarding inclusive language in the motivational volume accompanying the never accepted handbook proposal for the Swedish church from year 2000. First by applying a reconfigured version of a method borrowed from analytical philosophy, excavates the views of gender/sex underlying the argumentation regarding inclusive language reform and gender-based discrimination. From these results a systematic reconstruction of the motivational volumes theology of gender/sex carried out. Finaly this reconstructed theology is critically evaluated by subjecting it to both the queer theology of Linn Tonstad and the feminist theology of Anne-Louise Eriksson regarding the construction and meaning of gender/sex as well as of liturgical language and its oppressive and liberating functions. This thesis concludes that the theology of gender/sex that follows from the motivational volume’s argumentation, is theologically problematic for the following reasons: The strict gender essentialism and dichotomic understanding om men and women are counterproductive to its emancipatory goal. By situating its argumentation in the patriarchal symbolic imaginary, its efforts to counteract patriarchal dominance becomes entangled in what Tonstad calls “the affective lives of binaries”. This suggests that every theology with an intention of inclusion and the combating of discrimination needs to commit itself to rigorous systematic examination of its theological premises’. Finaly, not only does the lack of such a theology counteract any emancipatory attempt, it also risks when applied in liturgy to severely limit the God that the liturgy speaks to and of.

Local Reception of Religious Change under Henry VIII and Edward VI: Evidence from Four Suffolk ParishesThompson, William Keene 01 January 2012 (has links)
From the second half of Henry VIII's reign through that of his son Edward VI, roughly 1530 through 1553, England was in turmoil. Traditional (Catholic) religion was methodically undermined, and sometimes violently swept away, in favor of a biblically based evangelical faith imported and adapted from European dissenters/reformers (Protestants). This thesis elucidates the process of parish-level religious change in England during the tumultuous mid sixteenth century. It does so through examining the unique dynamics and complexities of its local reception in a previously unstudied corner of the realm, the Suffolk parishes of Boxford, Cratfield, Long Melford, and Mildenhall. This thesis asserts that ongoing alterations in religious policy under Henry VIII and Edward VI reflected an evolution in both governmental tactics and local attitudes toward the locus of religious authority. Contrary to the view that the Reformation was done to the English people, the parish-level evidence investigated herein shows that, at least in Suffolk, the reformation was only accomplished with their cooperation. Furthermore, it finds that while costly, divisive, and unpopular in many parts of England, religious change was, for the most part, received enthusiastically in these four parishes. Two types of primary sources inform the historical narrative and analysis of this thesis. First, the official documents of religious reform initiated by the crown and Parliament tell the story of magisterial reformation, from the top down. Second, the often-mundane entries found in churchwardens' accounts of parish income and expenditure illuminate the individual and communal dynamics involved in implementing religious policy on the local level, from the bottom up. As agents operating between the distinct spheres of government authority and local interest, this study finds that churchwardens wielded significant power in the mediation of religious policy. The churchwardens' accounts are also supplemented throughout by analysis of selected parishioners' wills, which provide insight into personal beliefs of key individuals and hint at the formation of early religious affinity groupings within parishes. Chapter One summarizes the development of the pre-Reformation Sarum liturgy, its Eucharistic theology, and its relation to the late-medieval doctrine of purgatory. It also describes the richly decorated interiors of pre-Reformation English parish churches and their function as centers of community spiritual life. This provides a gauge through which to understand the extensive changes wrought to church liturgy and fabric during the Reformation. Chapter Two focuses on the unsettled nature of religious policy during the second half of Henry VIII's reign and how it set the stage for more severe changes to come. Chapters Three and Four examine the reign of Edward VI, which saw the most radical efforts at evangelical reform ever attempted in England. In these three chapters, official changes in religious policy are interwoven with analysis of local reaction in the four Suffolk parishes, revealing some surprising local responses and initiatives. The conclusion presents a summary of the historical narrative and analysis presented in the preceding chapters, suggests possibilities for further research, and offers closing thoughts about the local experience of negotiating religious change during this period.
