The piece sur piece log houses of Michigan : an architectural history

Charron, Craig E. January 1997 (has links)
This study presents a history of the French Canadian piece sur piece log houses constructed in Michigan in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Drawing upon a 17th century architectural tradition in Canada, the early French Canadian settlers switched from the poteaux en terre building style to the piece sur piece, or horizontal log construction form. This type of log house, through the building techniques it employed, was distinct from any of its contemporaries. The reason for this change dealt with the changing nature of the French settlement in Michigan, from a fur trade economy to one that included agriculture. These houses were not the crude log structures which have been popularly associated with the settlement of the nation's frontier, but rather a sophisticated design which made use of local and imported materials to create a refined structure that was intended for long term habitation. / Department of Architecture

Applying modern interpretation techniques to old hydrocarbon fields to find new reserves: A case study in the onshore Gulf of Mexico, U.S.A.

Hulsey, Josiah D 13 May 2016 (has links)
This study shows how the use of modern geological investigative techniques can reopen old, “drained” hydrocarbon fields. Specifically, it looks at the White Castle Field in South Louisiana. This field has pay sections ranging from late Oligocene to late Miocene. The late Oligocene package is underexplored and understudied and contains 3 primary reservoirs (Cib Haz (CH), MW, and MR). This study established the depositional history of these reservoirs. During most of the late Oligocene, the White Castle Salt Dome was located in a minibasin on the continental slope. The CH and MW deposited in this minibasin. The CH is an amalgamation of slumped shelfal limestones, sandstones, and shales deposited during a lowstand systems tract (LST). The MW comprises a shelf-edge delta that is part of a LST. The MR is an incised valley fill located in the continental shelf that was deposited during LST after the minibasin was filled.

Sousa, Glória Cristina Vieira de 11 February 2019 (has links)
Survival data hold special attention-needed peculiarities the moment you intend to realize an analysis on. These data own censorships and their variable responses are defined as lifetime to interest- event occurrence. There are distributions that harbor these data, such as exponential distribution, Weibull, gamma, generalized gamma, among others, just as their respective event-adapted regression models. Exponential regression and Weibull models are the most literature recurrent, in view of their easy application and appropriate data modeling. The generalized gamma regression model usually is a better fit to the data, due to its three-parameter comprise, just as the log-logistic regression model, which is seen as an alternative to Weibull distribution and is heavily utilized for it\'s explicit shapes to survivability and fail functions. Nonetheless, these models still retain restrictions and, on account of that, new regression model families are being developed, as in the log logistic generalized distribution family, which intends to offer better settings due to its different real data modeling ability. The purpose of this dissertation was to apply survival analysis techniques in Micrurus corallinus lifetime modeling, adjusting already existing models and the proposed Weibull generalized odd log logistic model (OLLG-W). We came to the conclusion that the adequate regression model to Micrurus corallinus data was the log-logistic model. The OLLG-W model didn\'t offer any benefits when compared to literature-recurrent ones.

Maria LÃcia Costa Teles 00 December 2007 (has links)

Recognition of Infrastructure Events Using Principal Component Analysis

Broadbent, Lane David 01 December 2016 (has links)
Information Technology systems generate system log messages to allow for the monitoring of the system. In increasingly large and complex systems the volume of log data can overwhelm the analysts tasked with monitoring these systems. A system was developed that utilizes Principal Component Analysis to assist the analyst in the characterization of system health and events. Once trained, the system was able to accurately identify a state of heavy load on a device with a low false positive rate. The system was also able to accurately identify an error condition when trained on a single event. The method employed is able to assist in the real time monitoring of large complex systems, increasing the efficiency of trained analysts.

STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURES FOR THE TRAFFIC INVENTORY DEPARTMENT OF THE DISNEY ABC TELEVISION GROUP

Johnson, Matthew L 01 December 2015 (has links)
The Mack truck principle is the reason a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) document is a good idea – so I was told by my boss in my early days working for Disney ABC Television Group. This principle is quite simple: if the one person who knows how to do the job walks out the door and is hit by a Mack truck, we have a problem; no one else knows how to do what that person did. And when it comes to television operations, that is a huge dilemma! Standard Operating Procedures is a document that lists the step-by-step process for completing tasks in order to, in this case, keep a network on the air. This document would be beneficial in cases of disaster recovery, but it might be just as useful for training new employees or for covering for someone who is out sick. There may be various reasons to go to the SOP, but they all have the same goal: to keep operations working to fulfill the business objective. An SOP for the operations of an entire network would likely fill at least one if not multiple books, so in order to keep this project manageable, I limited the development of the SOP to one department, Traffic Inventory, which is responsible for the commercial and promotional assets which are sold and scheduled to air on any of the Disney cable networks (Disney Channel, DisneyXD, and Disney Junior.) In order to develop an SOP, it was necessary to review the different software programs in use, and understand their purpose and application to the overall operations of the cable networks. This will be a “living” document, meaning updates and changes will be anticipated, requiring constant maintenance of the SOP in order to keep it up to the latest development. In an effort to make it truly useful, multiple screen captures are used, as this provides a more user-friendly tutorial and makes for a more effective “blueprint” to comprehend and follow. By having Standard Operating Procedures on hand, anyone in the department will be able to effectively follow the process for handling the commercial and promotional assets in an efficient manner, with minimal impact on the daily operation of the networks. This will then be a valuable document, helping the business to keep its commitment to both advertisers and viewers, without the fear of Mack trucks.

VIRTUALIZED CLOUD PLATFORM MANAGEMENT USING A COMBINED NEURAL NETWORK AND WAVELET TRANSFORM STRATEGY

Liu, Chunyu 01 March 2018 (has links)
This study focuses on implementing a log analysis strategy that combines a neural network algorithm and wavelet transform. Wavelet transform allows us to extract the important hidden information and features of the original time series log data and offers a precise framework for the analysis of input information. While neural network algorithm constitutes a powerfulnonlinear function approximation which can provide detection and prediction functions. The combination of the two techniques is based on the idea of using wavelet transform to denoise the log data by decomposing it into a set of coefficients, then feed the denoised data into a neural network. The experimental outputs reveal that this strategy can have a better ability to identify the patterns among problems in a log dataset, and make predictions with a better accuracy. This strategy can help the platform maintainers to adopt corresponding actions to eliminate risks before the occurrence of serious damages.

The Ethnohistory of Baker Cabin, a Clackamas County Pioneer Site

Woodward, V. Claire 01 January 1975 (has links)
Baker Cabin, a pioneer log structure, is located on privately owned property near the community of Carver, Oregon. According to traditional accounts the cabin has existed continuously on this site since its construction in 1856. Archaeological excavations of the cabin's foundation and the surrounding area uncovered date-able artifacts and a second foundation with an associated well. Analysis of the artifacts associated with the present cabin foundation indicate a post-1870 construction date those associated with the second foundation and its well indicate an 1850’s occupation. Four hypotheses that are explored in this paper can be derived from the interpretation of all available data: Baker Cabin was constructed in 1856 at a presently undiscovered site on the claim but was moved to its present location about 1870. Baker Cabin was constructed in 1856 on the precise spot that it now stands but reconstruction by the Old Timers' Association involved a complete rebuilding of the foundation. Baker Cabin was constructed in 1856 on the present foundation but extensive repairs were done on the foundation in the 1870's. The old foundation represents a smaller cabin occupied from the late 1840's until 1856. The old foundation with its associated well represents the original construction am habitation of the site. The present cabin is not the original 1856 cabin referred to in tradition but is rather a cabin constructed about 1870. Data used in this research include excavated materials, informant interviews, and historical documents. The excavated materials consist of glass and pottery sherds, buttons, cartridges, and toys. Informants interviewed are Baker descendants, and they provided recollections, documents, and pictures. Historical documents used included census and tax assessment records, newspapers, Donation Land Claim material, and family ledgers. Results of this research reveal that the authentic history of Baker Cabin will not be known unless further evidence becomes available. The first two hypotheses would seem to have no validity, however, the third and fourth hypotheses can be supported by the available data.

Jim?nez Ubeda, Antonio Enrique January 2014 (has links)
