Parks in public parking : empowering community members to reintegrate nature into the city

Southam, Theresa 16 September 2010 (has links)
This research explores how community leaders could use Corbett’s Spectrum of Environmental Ideologies (2006) to analyze the ideologies of communication campaigns before adopting one into a community. In this research, a mixed age class of elementary students and local artisans created two “parks” in public parking spaces and participated in an arts contest in Nelson, BC. This action research used analytic coding to reflect on participants’ relationship with nature based on their response to: international Park(ing) Day and Transition Nelson. Additionally, participant recommendations for greening Nelson’s downtown core were compared with four models of social change for generating ecocentric solutions. Ecocentric solutions stem from the belief that humans and nature are interdependent. Found to be key were nurturing participants’ nascent ecocentric values and investigating the campaign materials deeply. Additionally building motivation, exploring alternatives, problem-solving, partnerships and improved organizational communication are important elements of social change.

Lenoble, Nicolas 23 October 2017 (has links)
The order picking is a critical activity in distribution warehouses (60% of the operational costs in traditional warehouses). One way to reduce these costs is to collect several orders simultaneously, rather than individually, to avoid unnecessary travels to the operators in the case of manual picking of the products, and less workload for the machines, in the case of automated picking. We consider, in this PhD, warehouses where products are stored in automated storage systems composed by trays on which products are stored. We consider two types of machines: VLMs and Carousels. These two types differ by the time required to move from a tray to the next one to visit (constant in the case of a VLM, depending on the number of trays between 2 consecutively visited trays for the carousels). We aim to develop order batching methods in automated warehouses to collect a set of orders efficiently, according to criteria that we will define. We study a first category of order batching, for which each batch will be entirely collected (all orders associated with a given batch will be collected) before moving to the next batch. We evaluate completion time, when the operator does the picking on one or several machines. The interest of using multiple machines is to search trays in masked time (the machine change trays while the operator is busy to collect on other machines). From this evaluation of the completion time, we extract an optimization criterion and establish optimization models for the VLMs then the carousels. These models are then tested with actual data, thanks to the partnership with the company KLS Logistic, editor of the WMS Gildas. Finally, we extend the resolution to metaheuristics, to ensure good solutions under reasonable computation time. Significant savings in terms of completion time reduction justifies the interest of our work.We then study the second category, where a set of orders is collected simultaneously, but unlike the previous case, whenever an order is collected, it is immediately replaced by a new one. We'll talk here about "Rolling batching”. This approach is typically used in the "Drive-in shops". We develop an algorithm for the computation of the waiting time of the operator. Resolution coupling heuristics and a metaheuristic is proposed in order to effectively resolve the order sequencing. Significant gains are achieved by the use of the proposed method.

The identification and qualitative characterization of the environmental impacts have been realized from the use of the method List of Control ("Check-List"), which consists in the glimpse and the list of consequences (impacts), when is considerate the transformative potential of the environment physical, biotic and anthropic causes (impacting activities). To facilitate their evaluation, the method of Leopold Matrix, which facilitated the visualization and assessment of impacts on different components of the environment. To identify waterways, was used 1:50,000 basemap IBGE, using ArcGIS 9.3 softwere and Cadastral base of the City of Manaus, SEMEF scale of 1:2,000. After systematic data above was used to effect the SRTM image density of the watercourses in the area of Urban APA. For the spatio-temporal, multispectral images were used TM / Landsat 5, QuickBird, in the period that comprises the years 2001, 2005 and 2008 as well as aero-photogrammetric data (aerial photographs) for analysis of the temporal evolution of environmental degradation APA. Possibilitaramde Studies show that from the viewpoint of environmental impacts are common to the "Sizes", which differs only in intensity and magnitude of them. This information was evident when were making inquires about the impacts, which was concentrated in lots of different sizes: two medium-sized and two large-sized array and qualitative and quantitative. It was demonstrated that the allotments of Large Size with low population density tend to cause relatively less significant impacts than others who occupy smaller areas, considered in Small and / or Medium-sized, however, occupied more intensively. It was verified that the housing lot makers are responsible only for the suppression of plant part of the blending infrastructure (installation of building site, road system and recreation area), leaving the responsibility of the owners, the deforestation of the lots. This procedure revealed that a large portion of deforestation is the result of occupation of the plot, made without authorization from the Environmental Agency, disregarding the criteria of the legislation and no monitoring of construction, disrespecting the legal reserve area and interventions in the vast majority of Permanent Preservation Areas -APP. On the temporal analysis, the supervised classification was performed on Total Area of the APA, allowing the calculation of the dynamics and spatial-temporal process of deforestation, with allowance for the analysis of the study area which is its urban area. In the period 2006-2008, the rate of deforestation over the area of the BB was 63.26%. However, over the period analyzed, there was a reduction, an increase of only 6.36% and rate of progression was 59.78%. Analyzing the evolution of deforestation in the Urban Area of the APA, it was found that the main vectors of deforestation were: exploration of mineral products for immediate use in construction, crops, vegetation removal activities for industrial facilities, as well as invasions of areas, than the allotments.

Evidence of Agrarian Urbanism: Land Use Preferences of Residents Living on Small Acreage Farms or Large Lots with Animal Rights in Cache Valley, Utah

Hurst, Laurie B. 01 May 2013 (has links)
Until the last half century, land development patterns in the Intermountain West were designed after the Mormon settlement pattern. With its gridiron streets and in-town farmsteads, this pattern gave families the opportunity to grow crops and raise a few animals on their one acre or less in town with the added advantage of having a social life. Over the last century, small farms have dwindled and large farms have increased in size. However, in the Intermountain West the farmstead tradition continues with families who grow gardens and raise animals on their large city lots, who value self-sufficiency, and who thrive in wide open spaces. To better understand the land uses and preferences of this population, a research survey was mailed to a sample pool of residents of Cache Valley, Utah who live on large lots with animal rights. They contributed an array of data about their backgrounds and how they are specifically using their land. Their responses validated the existence of a continued agrarian culture and gave insight on how they felt about trends in conservation subdivisions and common open space. A range of opinions about ideal lot size supported rural planners' suggestions to develop lots of varying sizes to meet the needs of a diverse population. Small farms on large lots can be a valuable part of a sustainable urban and rural environment. Local vegetables and agricultural products bring nature and natural processes back to an urban setting and reduce the environmental footprint imposed by extensive shipping. Culturally, small farmers provide a connection to the past and fulfill a lifestyle choice for a rural-minded population. Particularly in the Intermountain West, planners need to integrate these small farms into their developments to preserve the rural character of towns and cities of the region.

Optimal and Approximate Algorithms for the Multiple-Lots-per-Carrier Scheduling and Integrated Automated Material Handling and Lot Scheduling Problems in 300mm Wafer Fabs

Wang, Lixin 22 October 2008 (has links)
The latest generation of semiconductor wafer fabs produce Integrated Circuits (ICs) on silicon wafers of 300mm diameter. In this dissertation, we address the following two types of (new) scheduling problems that are encountered in this generation of wafer fabs: multiple-lots-per-carrier scheduling problem (MLCSP) and integrated automated material handling and lot scheduling problem (IMHLSP). We consider several variations of the MLCSP depending upon the number of machines used, the prevailing processing technology of the machines, and the type of objective functions involved. For the IMHLSP, we study two instances, one with infinite number of vehicles and the other with finite number of vehicles. We begin by introducing a single-machine, multiple-lots-per-carrier with single-wafer-processing-technology scheduling problem for the objective of minimizing the total completion time (MLCSP1). The wafer carrier is a front-opening unified pod (FOUP) that can hold a limited number of wafers. The problem is easy to solve when all the lots are of the same size. For the case of different lot sizes, we first relax the carrier (FOUP) capacity and propose a dynamic programming-based algorithm, called RelaxFOUP-DP, which enables a quick determination of its optimal solution that serves as a lower bound for the problem with limited FOUP capacity. Then, a branch-and-bound algorithm, designated as MLCSP1-B&B, is developed that relies on the lower bound determined by the RelaxFOUP-DP algorithm. Numerical tests indicate that MLCSP1-B&B finds optimal solutions much faster than the direct solution of the MLCSP1 model by the AMPL CPLEX 10.1 Solver. In fact, for the medium and low density problems, the MLCSP1-B&B algorithm finds optimal solutions at the starting node (node zero) itself. Next, we consider a single-machine, multiple-lots-per-carrier with single-carrier-processing-technology scheduling problem for the objective of minimizing total completion time (MLCSP2). As for the case of MLCSP1, the optimal solution for the case in which all the lots are of the same size can be obtained easily. For the case of different lot sizes, we determine a lower bound and an upper bound for the problem and prove the worst-case ratios for them. Subsequently we analyze a two-machine flow shop, multiple-lots-per-carrier with single-wafer-processing-technology scheduling problem for the objective of minimizing the makespan (MLCSP3). We first consider a relaxed version of this problem, and transform the original problem to a two-machine flow shop lot streaming problem. Then, we propose algorithms to find the optimal capacitated sublot sizes for the case of lots with (1) the same ratio of processing times, and, (2) different ratios of processing times on the machines. Since the optimal solutions obtained from the lot streaming problem may not be feasible to the MLCSP3, we develop heuristic methods based on the heuristic procedures for the bin packing problem. We develop four heuristic procedures for lots with the same ratio of processing times, and another four procedures for lots with different ratios of processing times on the machines. Results of our numerical experimentation are presented that show that our heuristic procedures generate almost optimal solutions in a matter of a few seconds. Next, we address the integrated automated material handling and lot scheduling problem (IMHLSP) in the presence of infinite number of vehicles. We, first, propose a new strong hybrid model, which has the advantages of both segregate and direct models. In the segregate model, a job is always transferred to the stocker after its completion at a station, while in the direct model, it is transferred to the next machine in case that machine can accommodate the jobs; otherwise, the job will stay at current station. The decisions involved in the strong hybrid model are the sequence in which to process the lots and a selection between the segregate and direct models for each lot, whichever optimizes system performance. We show that, under certain conditions about the processing times of the lots, the problem can be approximated by the cases of either infinite buffer or zero-buffer at the machines. Hence, we consider all three cases of the IMHLSP in this chapter, namely, infinite buffer, zero-buffer, and limited buffer sizes. For the strong hybrid model with limited buffer size, we propose a branch-and-bound algorithm, which uses a modified Johnson's algorithm to determine a lower bound. Two upper bounds for this algorithm are also determined. Results of our numerical investigation indicate that our algorithm finds optimal solutions faster than the direct solution of the IMHLSP model by the AMPL CPLEX 10.1 Solver. Experimental results also indicate that for the same problem size, the times required to solve the IMHLSP model with interbay movements are larger than those for intrabay movements. Finally, we investigate the IMHLSP in the presence of limited number of vehicles. Due to the complex nature of the underlying problem, we analyze small-size versions of this problem and develop algorithms for their solution. For some of these problems, we can find optimal solutions in polynomial time. Also, based on our analysis on small-size systems, we have shown why some real-time dispatching (RTD) rules used in real fabs are expected to perform well while not the others. In addition, we also propose some new and promising RTD rules based on our study. / Ph. D.

Etude expérimentale du comportement des aérosols et de leurs dépôts dans un élévateur à godets : impact sur la contamination croisée en alimentation animale / Experimental study of aerosol behavior and their deposits in a bucket elevator : impact on carry-over of micro-ingredients in animal feed industry

Leloup, Marine 25 May 2012 (has links)
Carry-over of additives and/or medicated products is a common issue in feed industry and, by extension in most of powder handling industries. Currently carry-over rate of a production line can be accurately defined but the causes are not identified yet. It can be broken into 2 phases : firstly, particle deposit during one batch processing and then, their collecting during the following batches. Experimental studies, carried out on industrial sites or on test benches, charged the bucket elevator situated just after the mixer to be responsible for a significant increase of cross contamination rate of industrial feed production lines. Therefore this work focuses on this handling device. It transfers mixing of several raw materials in powdery forms, which may contain micro-ingredients, especially additives or medicated products. The aim of this study is to understand how process operations affect cross contamination rates during bucket elevator handling. A test bench of this handling device, a reference product and laboratory methods have been setup. Moreover, an experimental fractional factorial design highlights the effects of several process parameters : on one hand the discharge phase on elevator head (linked to belt velocity) and the discharge spout angle act on microingredients deposit mass. On the other hand, spacing between buckets and the leg’s inner surface influences micro-ingredients collected mass. Furthermore, ideal position of process parameters has been defined. By this way, cross contamination rate on the test bench has been decreased from 9 to 7 percent. Finally, velocity fields observations during the discharge phase leads to better understanding of how these process parameters influence cross contamination rate.

High vigor seeds provide rapid and uniform seedling emergence in the field, resulting in plants that have a higher yield potential. The research has been able to elucidate the relationship between seed germination and establishment of crops, but the same emphasis is not being given to studies to evaluate the behavior of the plants during the phenological cycle and production. This study aimed to verify the effect of varying the force level of seed lots on the growth of plants on yield components and soybean yield. Two soybean cultivars, NK 7059 RR and SYN 1059 RR, had their batch ranked levels of force 65%, 70%, 75%, 80%, 85%, 90% and 95% by accelerated aging test and sown in the field. The experiment was conducted at Fazenda Iruna located in Paraguay, during the harvest of 2014/15. The experimental design was a randomized block in a factorial 2x7 consists of cultivars and levels of force, respectively, with five repetitions. The results were submitted to variance analysis and when significant, the effects of cultivars were evaluated by the Tukey test, whereas the effects of the levels of force evaluated by polynomial regression. The increase in seed force causes linear increases in plant growth, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, mass of thousand seeds and soybean yield. Soybean cultivars show different behaviors to the variation in the force level of the seeds to the mass of a thousand seeds and productivity, and, depending on the cultivar, every percentage point increase in seed force level is able to increase productivity up to 28.0 kg ha-1. Lots with low vigor reduce productivity by 26.5% .The use of seeds with force levels of 95% can increase soybean yield at 842 kg ha-1.
