Marilia Wellichan Mancini 23 July 1999 (has links)
We report the observation of trap-loss collisional rates due to fine structure changing collisions between cold and trapped 85Rb atoms. We have measured, by photoionization of the atomic fragments in 5P1/2 state originated in these collisions, the rates through the atoms leave the trap induced by this loss mechanism. We carried out experiments to determine the rate dependence with the intensity of the trapping laser, and with the frequency, using the catalisys technique. We also measured the contribution of this process to the total trap-loss rate and determined that fine structure changing is not the dominant loss mechanism. It was also observed that the hyperfine structure plays an important role in the rate behavior. We compared our results with those given by a semiclassical theoretical approach, the Gallagher-Pritchard model, and some disagreements were observed. We proposed some arguments to explain these discrepancies. We believe that such results should stimulate theoretical work on this field.

Magneto-optical properties of the center F2+ in KCl:SH-.

Dario Antonio Donatti 20 November 1987 (has links)
A transição 1s ?g, 2p? / Using KCl:SH- doped with F2+ centers without F and F2, we studied the Magnetic Circular Dichroism (MCD), in absorption of yhe transition 1s ?g(493?m) and 1s ?g - 2py?w (509 ?m) as a function of the magnetic field 0 < H < 48 KG and temperature 1.5 < T < 77K. The transition 1s ?g, 2p? (1.4 ?m) does not present any MCD within the limit of detection of our equipament (1.2 X 10-4); No dichroism has been observed in emission in the 2p?w- 1s ?g transition (1.2 X 10-4). F2+ centers reorient along the [110] direction down to 1.5 K by polarized light excitation in the ? bands and present a strong birefringence. Measurements in absorption with aligned F2+ in various geometry allows as to determine the contribution of each orientation to the DCM. A theorical model is presented in good agrement with the experimental results. The optical detection of the EPR in X-band give the Landé factor af the graund state is g =1.965 ± 0.007) and the spin-lattice relaxation measured at H = 3.2 KG is typical of a direct process T1-1 = 4.3 X 10-2cotgh(g?H/2kT).

Studium fyzikálních vlastností Heuslerových slitin / Studium fyzikálních vlastností Heuslerových slitin

Beran, Lukáš January 2015 (has links)
This diploma thesis is devoted to systematic study of structural trans- formations of Heusler alloys by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy. Structural transformations in these alloys are induced by different microscopic mechanisms. Obtained experimental results were confronted with theoretical calculations. This allowed the discussion of obtained results and suggestion of their interpretation. In the case of Co- Fe-Si alloys, changes in optical and magneto-optical properties with change of Co-Fe ratio were observer. This was explained by lowering of the gap for minority spins with increasing Fe concentrations. Temperature dependent optical and magneto-optical properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloy showed the pres- ence of so-called Martensitic transformation from cubic to tetragonal phase. A study of Mn-Rh-Co-Sn alloys did not show a clear dependence of physical properties upon the concentration of Rh and Mn. This was explained by strong strain inside the samples, which distorted obtained results. 1

Optické a magnetooptické vlastnosti Heuslerových sloučenin / Optical and magneto-optical properties of Heusler compounds

Král, Daniel January 2017 (has links)
Cílem této práce bylo studium Heuslrových sloučenin pomocí optických a magneto-optických (MO) metod. V případě první sloučeniny, Co2FeGa0.5Ge0.5, jsme studovali výskyt strukturálního disorderu za pomoci spektroskopické elipsometrie, MO spektroskopie a MO Kerrovy magnetome- trie. Experimentální výsledky jsme poté porovnali s teoretickými modely. Doplnili jsme také výsledky našich spolupracovník·, a to včetně X-ray difrakce, atomic-force mikroskopie a ab initio výpočt·, abych potvrdili naši interpretaci naměřených výsledk·. 1

Complex Oxide Photonic Crystals

Dzibrou, Dzmitry January 2009 (has links)
Microphotonics has been offering a body of ideas to prospective applicationsin optics. Among those, the concept of photonic integrated circuits (PIC’s) has recently spurred a substantial excitement into the scientific community. Relisation of the PIC’s becomes feasible as the size shrinkage of the optical elements is accomplished. The elements based on photonic crystals (PCs) represent promising candidacy for manufacture of PIC’s. This thesis is devoted to tailoring of optical properties and advanced modelling of two types of photonic crystals: (Bi3Fe5O12/Sm3Ga5O12)m and (TiO2/Er2O3)m potentially applicable in the role optical isolators and optical amplifiers, respectively. Deposition conditions of titanium dioxide were first investigated to maximise refractive index and minimise absorption as well as surface roughness of titania films. It was done employing three routines: deposition at elevated substrate temperatures, regular annealing in thermodynamically equilibrium conditions and rapid thermal annealing (RTA). RTA at 500 oC was shown to provide the best optical performance giving a refractive index of 2.53, an absorption coefficient of 404 cm−1 and a root-mean-square surface roughness of 0.6 nm. Advanced modelling of transmittance and Faraday rotation for the PCs (Bi3Fe5O12/Sm3Ga5O12)5 and (TiO2/Er2O3)6 was done using the 4 × 4 matrix formalism of Višňovský. The simulations for the constituent materials in the forms of single films were performed using the Swanepoel and Višňovský formulae. This enabled generation of the dispersion relations for diagonal and off-diagonal elements of the permittivity tensors relating to the materials. These dispersion relations were utilised to produce dispersion relations for complex refractive indices of the materials. Integration of the complex refractive indices into the 4 × 4 matrix formalism allowed computation of transmittance and Faraday rotation of the PCs. The simulation results were found to be in a good agreement with the experimental ones proving such a simulation approach is an excellent means of engineering PCs.

Probe of Coherent and Quantum States in Narrow-Gap Based Semiconductors in the Presence of Strong Spin-Orbit Coupling

Frazier, Matthew Allen 23 September 2010 (has links)
The goal of this project was to study some unexplored optical and magneto-optical properties of the newest member of III-V ferromagnetic structures, InMnSb, as well as InSb films and InSb/AlInSb quantum wells. The emphasis was on dynamical aspects such as charge and spin dynamics in order to address several important issues of the spin-related phenomena. The objectives in this project were to: 1) understand charge/spin dynamics in NGS with different confinement potentials, 2) study phenomena such as interband photo-galvanic effects, in order to generate spin polarized current, 3) probe the effect of magnetic impurities on the spin/charge dynamics. This thesis describes three experiments: detection and measurement of spin polarized photocurrents in InSb films and quantum wells arising from the circular photogalvanic effect, and measurements of the carrier and spin relaxation in InSb and InMnSb structures by magneto-optical Kerr effect and differential transmission. The samples for our studies have been provided by Prof. Heremans at Virginia Tech, Prof. Santos at the University of Oklahoma, and Prof. Furdyna at the University of Notre Dame. / Ph. D.

Sol-gel processing of RxY3-xAlyFe5-yO12 magneto-optical films

DiBiccari, Anders Owen 31 March 2003 (has links)
The goal of this research was the fabrication of thin films with magneto-optic (MO) properties. Accomplishment of this task was achieved via sol-gel processing of rare-earth and aluminum substituted yttrium-iron garnet (RxY3-xAlyFe5-yO12, R,Al:YIG), where R= Bi, Gd, Er, Ho. Detailed are the processing conditions, parameters and results leading to R,Al:YIG films with MO response. Success was attained with a 0.25M Gd,Al:YIG solution spin coated for 120 seconds at 3500rpm onto a (111) gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) substrate and calcinated at 900°C for 4 hours. Samples were characterized via x-ray diffraction (XRD), magneto-optical loop tracer, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS), profilometry and optical microscopy. / Master of Science
