Learning how to Learn : a study of English vocabulary learning strategies among English major students at a Chinese university

Zhou, Ningjue January 2011 (has links)
This paper reports on the study of the strategy use of Chinese English majors in vocabulary learning; the individual differences between effective and less effective learners in employing vocabulary learning strategies and the relationship between their strategies and their outcome in English learning. In this research, 118 junior English majors inChineseUniversitywere investigated. The participants were asked to take a vocabulary test and complete a vocabulary-learning questionnaire.   The data collected was analyzed using the SPSS (the Statistical Package for Social Science) and the result indicates that there are significant differences between effective and less effective learners. Effective learners use strategies more frequently and flexibly, while less effective learners turn out to be rote learners. They employ repetition strategy more often and they rely more on their mother tongue, Chinese, in vocabulary learning. Thus the translation strategy was extensively used among them. The result also shows that seven strategies, namely applied, categorization, self-monitoring, cooperation, media, elaboration and dictionary strategy are positively correlated with the vocabulary test scores and the Test for English Majors (Grade 4) scores. The above findings have certain implication for both learners and teachers.

The Development of Occupational Identity in Undergraduate Music Education Majors

L'Roy, DiAnn 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the development of occupational identity in undergraduate music education majors using a Symbolic Interactionist theoretical framework. Three research problems were formulated: (1) The identification of occupational norms and values of undergraduate music education majors; (2) The determination of the commitment of under graduate music education majors to specific skills and knowledge of music education; (3) The determination of career commitment to music education by undergraduate majors. The sample consisted of undergraduate music education majors enrolled in North Texas State University; Denton, Texas, during 1981 and 1982. A questionnaire and interview schedule, which had been developed in a pilot study, were used to gather data. Questionnaire responses from 165 students were analyzed by comparing selected variables by area and by class year. These data were further clarified by information from thirty-eight interviews conducted by this researcher.

The Impact of a Classroom Performance System on Learning Gains in a Biology Course for Science Majors

Marin, Nilo E 28 March 2013 (has links)
This study was conducted to determine if the use of the technology known as Classroom Performance System (CPS), specifically referred to as “Clickers”, improves the learning gains of students enrolled in a biology course for science majors. CPS is one of a group of developing technologies adapted for providing feedback in the classroom using a learner-centered approach. It supports and facilitates discussion among students and between them and teachers, and provides for participation by passive students. Advocates, influenced by constructivist theories, claim increased academic achievement. In science teaching, the results have been mixed, but there is some evidence of improvements in conceptual understanding. The study employed a pretest-posttest, non-equivalent groups experimental design. The sample consisted of 226 participants in six sections of a college biology course at a large community college in South Florida with two instructors trained in the use of clickers. Each instructor randomly selected their sections into CPS (treatment) and non-CPS (control) groups. All participants filled out a survey that included demographic data at the beginning of the semester. The treatment group used clicker questions throughout, with discussions as necessary, whereas the control groups answered the same questions as quizzes, similarly engaging in discussion where necessary. The learning gains were assessed on a pre/post-test basis. The average learning gains, defined as the actual gain divided by the possible gain, were slightly better in the treatment group than in the control group, but the difference was statistically non-significant. An Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) statistic with pretest scores as the covariate was conducted to test for significant differences between the treatment and control groups on the posttest. A second ANCOVA was used to determine the significance of differences between the treatment and control groups on the posttest scores, after controlling for sex, GPA, academic status, experience with clickers, and instructional style. The results indicated a small increase in learning gains but these were not statistically significant. The data did not support an increase in learning based on the use of the CPS technology. This study adds to the body of research that questions whether CPS technology merits classroom adaptation.

Eldorado pétrolier dans le Golfe de Guinée. Risques et menaces sur la sécurité des approvisionnements. / Oil Eldorado in the Gulf of Guinea. Risks and threats on supply security

Tonfack Kenfack, Thérèse Flaviane 09 July 2011 (has links)
The rarefaction of the oil resource, the insecurity in the main oil region of the world (Arab-Persian Gulf) made the Gulf of Guinea the new oil El Dorado. The offshore character of its production, the Miss information of the real value of its proved reserve, the quality of its crude oil and political & economic legislations current in this region are guarantees of security of the oil supplies for the western world. Since the 90s, the oil resource of the Gulf of Guinea instigates the greeds of majors. Consequence of this attractiveness, Gulf of Guinea became a zone of convergence of the interests of countries developed as well as emergent’s countries. The geo-economic interests and current geopolitics in this region, situated in the heart of Africa, instigate rivalries and confrontations between actors making be afraid of oil war.Certainly, the opening of the Gulf of Guinea on the world represents a great interest in the organized maritime military strategies, and gives a new vision of the stakes. But it does not have to obliterate the reality of the facts. Between geography-economy and geopolitics, the pseudo-guarantee of security of oil supply that would offer the oil of the Gulf of Guinea made more and more the object of deep debates within the scientific and political communities. It is in this context that we chose to be interested at the risks and threaten who in fine can reduce even to interrupt the oil supplies in the Gulf of Guinea, in terms of stakes, risks, threats and potential challenges for decade to come.

Effects of Practicing Self-Selected Teaching Skills on Measures of Personality and Teaching Behavior of Elementary Education Majors

Patschke, Norris Gene 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine the effects which the practicing of self-selected teaching skills by elementary education majors had on measures of personality and of teaching behavior. Personality measures were limited to self-confidence; attitudes toward self, children, and others; identification with the teaching role; and identification with the teaching profession. The teaching behavior measures were coded interaction episodes between a teacher trainee and four pupils in a microteaching setting. It was concluded that training experiences of short duration (e.g., eight weeks or less) (1) can be expected to positively affect specific, narrowly defined personality traits such as identification with the teaching role and identification with the teaching profession, (2) cannot be expected to affect broadly defined, global personality traits such as self-confidence or attitudes toward self, children, and others, and (3) cannot be expected to affect the classroom interaction of teachers and pupils.

Contemporary Biology Curriculum for Non-majors

Smallwood, Susan 08 1900 (has links)
The proposed biology curriculum for non-majors has one main objective, namely to improve scientific literacy among college students. The National Science Education Standards defines scientific literacy as "the knowledge and understanding of scientific concepts and processes required for personal decision making, participation in civic and cultural affairs, and economic productivity". The suggested strategies to accomplish this goal are to limit the number of topics covered, introduce relevant scientific terminology, emphasize general biological concepts and themes, and hone critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Activities such as group projects, written and oral assignments, and class discussions are effective tools to assess student ability to communicate scientifically. It is also important for students to make connections between the course subject matter and how it affects real life events.
