An evaluation of the effect of lack of availability and poor distribution of information on successful job and organisation design in workers' co-operatives

Carlisle, B. T. J. January 1988 (has links)
This Thesis documents an exploratory investigation into the effect of poor information management on successful job and organisation design in workers' co-operatives. It was hypothesised that lack of availability and poor distribution of information militate against successful job and organisation design. Since sound information management is imperative for decision making and successful job and organisation design ensures workers satisfaction this study is fully justified. It is important that workers' co-operatives are economically successful and that people enjoy working in them. The topic is particularly important for the workers' co-operative movement because little research has been conducted on the links between information management and job and organisation design. The Thesis summarises the main issues and concepts relevant to the research topic and describes the implications of information management for job and organisation design in workers' co-operatives. The purchasing processes in four workers' co-operatives in Scotland were chosen as the information systems to be studied. Research field work, in the form of a Job Diagnosis Survey was also carried out to establish the links between information management and job and organisation design. Research results have been examined in relation to the participative arrangements one associates with workers' co-operatives. It was found that in addition to information management, other issues have an effect on successful job and organisation design. These include: objectives of each business; Argyris's Theory in Action; Lack of management skills; and poor systems design. This led to a comparison of the four co-operatives studied with the very successful Mondragon Group. Finally the implications of the research results have been discussed in relation to the workers' co-operative movement and to future research by those interested or involved in the movement.

The Study of Kaohsiung County's Disaster Rescue and Prevention System

Su, mo-Yang 27 July 2005 (has links)
Taiwan is located on west pacific typhoon and circum-pacific seismic zone. So the frequency which natural disasters, such as typhoon, earthquake, flood, and mudflows and landslide, occur is much higher than other countries. The natural disasters keep threatening our living environment, which is highly concerned by the public. In recent years, the government promulgated Disaster Prevention and Response Act and undertook a series of plans for disaster prevention and rescue and policy implementation. However, the development of science and technology, rapid social changes and increasing density of population make the work of disaster prevention and rescue more complicated. In addition, when a serious disaster occurs, most mayors of the local government still do not have any concept for the task of disaster rescue. Their not taking it seriously results in that the related departments can not be effectively integrated to deal with a contingency, which is blamed and queried by the public. This reveals the problem: Taiwan¡¦s disaster prevention and rescue mechanism is in chaos and operates slowly when the disaster just occurs. This research selected the disaster prevention and rescue system in the Hsiang level of Kaohsiung County as the case for study and focused on the organizational and functional aspects of this system. By the means of literature review, case study and questionnaire, this paper discussed the case how the government of Kaohsiung County handled the disasters caused by Mindulle typhoon and 0702 flood. It also examined the disaster prevention and rescue system in the Hsiang level of Kaohsiung County and identified which parts should be improved. From the conclusion of case study, this research also attempted to provide suggestions to the central and local government on the disaster prevention and rescue mechanism.

The epidemiology of injuries in professional rugby union

Brooks, John H. M. January 2004 (has links)
A prospective cohort study of 412 professional rugby union players registered with the English Premiership clubs was conducted during the 2002-2003 season. Injuries were diagnosed and reported by the club medics and the training practices by the club strength and conditioners. A total of 1,090 club injuries (match: 818; training: 260; unidentifiable onset: 12) and 145 international injuries (match: 97; training: 48) were reported. The incidence and risk of club match injuries was 97 injuries and 1,480 days absence per 1,000 player-hours, and the incidence and risk of international match injuries was 218 injuries and 3,076 days absence per 1,000 player-hours. The highest incidence of match injuries occurred to the thigh, however, injuries to the knee were of highest risk. The incidence of club and international training injuries was 3.1 and 6.1 injuries per 1,000 player-hours, respectively. When intrinsic risk factors were assessed, the youngest players (<21 years old) had the highest incidence and a significantly higher risk of injury. Playing position appeared to be the most influential determinate of injury profile, rather than intrinsic anthropometric risk factors alone. The match injury with the second highest incidence and risk was hamstring muscle injuries and a number of risk factors and protective training factors were identified. Results presented from this study have provided the most comprehensive study of injury incidence, aetiology and risk factors in professional rugby union to date. The data provide objective evidence on which to base both preventative interventions to reduce the probability of sustaining an injury and therapeutic interventions to reduce the severity of an injury and thereby reduce the overall risk associated with injuries.

Conceptual Foundation for Human Resource Accounting

Flowers, Vincent S. 05 1900 (has links)
With the current strain on the world's material resources and the increase in their cost, a constant pressure is building to increase the productivity of human resources. Adding, to the strain is the increasing demand of society for a higher quality of life through more meaningful work. Responding to both of these pressures requires decisions that simultaneously meet the goals of organizations and the needs and values of employees. To make the kind of decisions demanded by this dual priority of human effectiveness and improved quality of life, information is needed to: 1. Improve understanding of the nature and scope of human resource expenditures; 2. Improve selection, retention, and motivation of employees; 3. Allocate money spent on human resources; 4. Overhaul the approach to communication among managers, between managers and other employees, and between the organization as a whole and outside parties; 5. Expand the scope of internal and external reports to deal with social as well as financial accomplishments. The ultimate objective of this research is to develop a human resource model and a heuristic for developing empirical support which can be useful to businessmen seeking to increase human effectiveness and improve the quality of life. The model merges several previously unrelated theories dealing with human resources and in the process contributes some new concepts.

To sustain this theme, firstly it was brought up the debate on need to seek a sustainable development, then the challenge that organizations face to suit this purpose and, finally, the reflection on the role of the university on this perspective. Thus, the questions that establish the course of the study are: what is a sustainable campus? And how does it work a management model that integrates the values of sustainability? To answer the first question, it was looked for support in the academic theoretical framework. The aspects that indicate the sustainability of a university campus were analyzed and a chart that synthetizes these aspects was made, being applied as a standard for the field study. The field study aimed to answer the second question of this research: how does it work a management model that integrates the values of sustainability? This was accomplished through a case study on the campus of PUC-SP at Barueri. Data collection for this study came about through in-depth interviews conducted with employees from the campus, analysis of documents provided by the direction of campus and participant observation conducted by the researcher. Evidence shows that the social group under analysis is in an early stage of the quest for sustainability. However, it presents actions on almost all the investigated aspects. The analysis of the campus was made through positive and negative considerations about each of the aspects investigated, of which the negative reviews were brought by the interviewees themselves. Although sustainability is in the agenda of most organizations and under an intense debate, many questions remain to be investigated about the role of the university on the sustainable development and about the real contributions it can offer to this subject. Through the debate established in this research and its field study, it was possible to analyze the interaction of the theoretical dimension and what actually occurs in a real context / A presente pesquisa analisou os conceitos de sustentabilidade em um campus universitário.
