Usage variation of politeness markers: a corpus-based study of spoken academic discourse / Mandagumo žymeklių kalbos variantiškumas: diskurso analizė, paremta tekstyno duomenimis

The present study investigates usage variation of politeness markers in spoken academic discourse. The aim of this corpus-based analysis is is twofold. First, it aims at investigating different types of politeness markers in educational settings. Second, the usage of politeness markers in spoken academic discourse is analyzed with respect to general spoken English. The present investigation focuses on different politeness markers randomly selected for the analysis. The politeness markers are categorized into four distinctive types (i.e. indirect requests, apologies, respect markers, and hedges) according to the functions they perform in spoken discourse. / Šis baigiamasis darbas pristato mandagumo žymeklių kalbos variantiškumo analizę sakytiniame akademiniame diskurse, paremtą tekstyno duomenimis. Tyrimo tikslas yra dvejopas: išanalizuoti mandagumo žymeklių kalbos variantiškumą sakytiniame akademiniame diskurse ir palyginti su jų vartosena bendrinėje šnekamojoje anglų kalboje. Analizė atlikta remiantis skirtingais mandagumo žymekliais, atsitiktinai atrinktais ir suskirstytais į skirtingas kategorijas, t.y. netiesioginius prašymus, atsiprašymus, pagarbumo žymeklius ir švelninamuosius žodžius. Mandagumo žymekliai suskirstyti į skirtingus tipus pagal jų atliekamas funkcijas sakytinėje anglų kalboje.

Magistro darbo teorinėje dalyje ,,Teorinis rašytinės komunikacijos raidos pagrindas“ analizuojamos socioligvistinė, socio-psichologinė mandagumo ir retorikos teorijos kaip metodologinis rašytinės komunikacijos tyrimo pagrindas, atskleidžiamos jų pritaikymo rašytinės komunikacijos tyrimams galimybės. Tiriamojoje dalyje ,,Diplomatinių raštų tipai ir istorinė raida“ analizuojami diplomatinių raštų ir oficialių dokumentų tipai (notos, laiškai, memorandumai, pro memoria, tarptautiniai teisiniai dokumentai ir kt.), apžvelgiamas istorinis-komunikacinis diplomainių raštų raidos aspektas nuo antikos laikų iki šiuolaikinės rašytinės komunikacijos ir elektroninio komunikavimo. / This thesis provides an analysis of written diplomatic language as a part of the diplomatic protocol in the context of human communication process and courtesy. Various approaches of different authors are presented including the overview of sociolinguistiscs, socio-psychological politeness theory and rhetoric; different aspects of diplomatic intercourse are discussed while text being considered as the essence of diplomacy. Three main issues of written diplomatic language are here considered as the most significant. The first aspect is the diplomatic correspondence with its different forms for communicating with international actors. These are notes, letters, memoranda and aides-memoires. Both form and contents of these documents are analysed. The second aspect is diplomacy and language, surveying the historical development of diplomatic language and the current language trends related to IT development. The third aspect emphasizes the importance of written language in international legal documents such as agreements. It alsoprovides a historical perspective to the developments of diplomatic language and focuses on the diplomatic correspondence as the means of negotiation, representation and exchange between nations. It also deals with politeness of diplomatic language and the art of drafting official letters and documents, describes the growth of diplomatic process and its conventions as the response to the interconnected developments of more complicated governing structures...
