An Analysis of the Demand for Government of Canada Marketable Debt

Murphy, Joseph Lawrence 05 1900 (has links)

The primary objective of this thesis is to provide a systematic analysis of the Portfolio behaviour of the principal holders of Government of Canada securities, particularly insofar as these latter securities are concerned. The main non-government participants in the market for these securities are categorized as chartered banks, non-bank financial institutions, which are further subdivided into deposit-type and insurance-type institutions, and non-financial corporations. Si~ce institutional and legal considerations differ considerably with respect to their impact on the investment behaviour of the groups studied, these aspects are examined in varying degrees of detail for each group. Empirical evidence is examined to determine the changes in the portfolio structure of these institutions over time and regression analysis is used to isolate the principal determinants of the demand for Government of Canada securities on the part of each of the above-mentioned groups. To provide a theoretical basis for an assessment of the appropriate explanatory variables and the direction of influence of these variables, a model of portfolio behaviour is developed for the deposit-type institutions. The results of this analysis are used in the specification and interpretation of demand equations for federal government securities on the part of these institutions. The thesis commences by providing a background with respect to the characteristics of the public debt and the growth in the debt over time and concludes with a summary of the results reached in the main body of empirical analysis.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

An empirical investigation of the predictors of self- and other reported marketability: Looking beyond human capital

Day, Rachel 01 June 2005 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to propose and test a comprehensive model ofmarketability using both individual and situational predictors. Participants in thisstudy were members of professional associations and were recruited from internetlistserves. They consisted of 485 employees and 176 co-workers. This study used amatching technique to link participant and co-worker data and was the first study toassess multiple perspectives of marketability. Results demonstrated the relationshipsof human capital variables, positivity traits, proactive career behaviors, thenvironment and industry characteristics on internal and external marketability.Interestingly, not all predictors related to both internal and external marketabilityuniformly, suggesting that the two constructs may have different consequences.

Impact of overhead irrigation on nitrogen dynamics and marketable yield of potato

Abbas, Haider 01 April 2015 (has links)
In Southern Manitoba, potato producers are experiencing wetter and drier conditions within the soil profile during the growing season leading to poor quality and inconsistent yields. Russet Burbank Potato cultivar was grown in Southern Manitoba on fine sandy loam soil in a two year (2013-2014) study using two water management treatments: (i) overhead irrigation and (ii) no-irrigation. The main objectives of the study were (i) to assess the impact of overhead irrigation on water table depth and potato yield (ii) to estimate the shallow groundwater contribution to potato water requirement through upward flux (iii) to track the nitrogen dynamics within the potato root-zone under overhead irrigation and no-irrigation scenarios (iv) to examine the effects of no-irrigation and overhead irrigation system at critical growth stages on marketable yield and quality of potatoes. In 2013, water was applied using a linear move irrigation system and in 2014 a rain gun irrigation system was used for the irrigated treatment. Volumetric soil water content, precipitation, irrigation depth, water table depth, nitrate concentration and electrical conductivity in potato root-zone, groundwater electrical conductivity, weather variables, total potato yield, marketable yield, and quality parameters were measured. The total yield was not significantly different between the two treatments in both years. The marketable yield of the irrigated treatment (36.89 MT/ha) was 20% higher (p = 0.017) compared to the non-irrigated treatment (30.74 MT/ha) in 2013. However, no significant difference was found between the irrigated (39.0 MT/ha) and non-irrigated (43.7 MT/ha) treatments in 2014. Potato yields from both treatments were significantly correlated with the average groundwater depth. Water balance analysis within the root-zone during rainy and rain-free periods showed that nitrate rich groundwater may have contributed to some of the crop water demand. The lack of rainfall and high temperature during tuber initiation and tuber bulking stages resulted in the accumulation of high concentration of nitrates within the root-zone by the late release of nitrates from the polymer-coated urea and the upward migration of groundwater containing 55 ppm and 70 ppm of nitrates in the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons, respectively. Overhead irrigation was found to be economically advantageous to produce better quality potatoes with higher marketable yields.

A rentabilidade na cadeia de suprimentos vista estrategicamente a partir da margem de contribuição: o caso da indústria do álcool combustível no estado de São Paulo / The profitability in the supply chain seen strategically starting from the contribution margin: the case of the fuel alcohol industry in the state of São Paulo

Garcia, Sérgio Ney Padilha 10 February 2006 (has links)
Proálcool (program) and specifically the chain of the hydrated alcohol pass through a cruciate moment now. Newly coming out of a disturbed period that, in spite of all regulations, assumed government protection and even a good marketable potential, almost ended in early death, they have had their redemption announced. The essential difference is that in the basis of the announced redemption is the most important part of the chain – the final consumer. To understand him, to decode his needs and wills is the key of prosperity. As a block this is the great challenge of this chain. Without rules, no business succeeds in free markets and much less without the component profitability present. In a chain of such importance and scope with its several independent parts, the profitability vision departing from appropriation of contribution margins, for each of its links, in balanced shares of the added total is of basic strategic importance, to make possible healthy life for all. This strategic vision, however, goes a lot besides dispute for prices and absolute costs to be covered. The essence of the subject is in the creation of value to the customer, that will pay profitable prices which could be higher or smaller than those acquired in a less suitable marketable condition. This work studies profitability in the supply chain in a study of case of the fuel alcohol in the state of São Paulo through the contribution margin strategically, as the starting point of a better understanding of a promising way of business.

Analýza normativních nástrojů regulace v oblasti životního prostředí na příkladu Směrnice EU o průmyslových emisích. / Analysis of normative instruments of regulation within ecological policy on the example of EU Directive on industrial emissions.

Turková, Andrea January 2012 (has links)
Within the frame of the ecological policy, there exists a number of instruments for a protection of environment and to solve problems related to it. Single types of instruments are established on diferent principles which leads to long-lasting arguments of economists on fitness or unfitness for purpose. At the application of administrative instruments of regulation, as it is described by neoclassical economy theory, a question arises, if this strict solution is effective and practical in light of meeting targets of the environmental policy. Arguments which hold the view that the EU Directive on industrial emissions in the metallurgy sector implementation, as an above mentioned administrative instrument, is effective and practical can be displaced in case of comparison with well set alternative instrument - marketable emission licences.
