Gotik och komik -En diskussion om genre

Olsson, Simon January 2019 (has links)
This bachelor thesis discusses the concept of genre and the comic Gothic. It is an attempt to demonstrate the conflicts rooted in "genre" by discussing several scholars, such as Alistair Fowler and Mattias Fyhr with their works Kinds of Literature and De mörka labyrinterna respectively, and then problematise the "Gothic" as a genre and as a concept. Thus Avril Horner’s and Sue Zlosnik’s work Gothic and the Comic Turn is consulted through the discussion. The questions I ask are the following: What is a literary genre? How is the comic Gothic described by the researchers, and how does comic Gothic work in A. Lee Martinez’ novel Gil’s All Fright Diner (2005)? How can one use these questions in the classroom? The used methods in the thesis are genre analysis and close reading. I conclude that genre is a way to understand the relationship between a literary work and various conventions, such as environment and its contemporaries. Genre is also a tool for the reader to understand the traditions, history and other works the read text is related to. The comic inside the Gothic may appear and is as natural to the genre as horror and terror, since the Gothic is always close to self-parody. This can even be observed in the first Gothic novel, Horace Walpole’s Castle of Otranto (1764). Furthermore, Gil’s All Fright Diner uses both the repertoire of classic Gothic and Horner’s and Zlosnik’s findings of the comic turn in the Gothic. Finally, the question regarding the definition of literary genre can be used in the classroom to widen students’ views on both genre itself and the prose they read. The comic Gothic can be used as an example on how genre can appear in different modes. Gil’s All Fright Diner is a thankful text for classroom readings due to its comic and gothic nature, and its contemporary language, themes and styles can make it relatable to students. There is therefore a potential in the concept of genre and the comic Gothic as subjects of discussion in the classroom.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (Osa) And Oral Manifestations In College Students

Martinez, Maria 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
Background: The prevalence rate of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) has been increasing steadily over the past two decades. OSA is often misdiagnosed with other medical conditions, and there are several complications associated with OSA, such ashypertension, coronary artery disease, and cognitive problems, including higher rates of strokes and epilepsy. Further, dental complications may arise from being diagnosed with OSA, impacting overall systemic health. Patients suffering from OSA are more susceptible to developing dry mouth, thus increasing bacterial/fungal growth, leading to tooth decay and periodontal disease. There is currently a lack of data exploring OSA in College Students and the Oral Manifestations (symptoms or conditions linked in the oral cavity) related to having OSA. The present study investigated the relationship between OSA and Oral Manifestations among College Students. Methods: Approximately 230 college students from a large university were recruited to participate in our cross-sectional study. The Epworth Sleepiness Scale was used to screen for students at higher risk for OSA. Oral manifestations were also assessed by providing a survey/questionnaire for the students to list their dental history. Results: Overall, the prevalence of excessive daytime sleepiness was 24.9% in our sample, and males reported a higher percentage of excessive daytime sleepiness (31.0%) compared to females (23.7%). A statistically significant relationship was observed between ESS score and the previous use of orthodontic treatment(s) (chi-square with two degrees of freedom = 7.3277, p = 0.026), ESS and academic standing (chi-square with two degrees of freedom = 6.6348, p = 0.036), bruxism and academic standing (chi-square with two degrees of freedom = 7.4323, p = 0.006), recent cavity in the last two years and gender (chi-square with two degrees of freedom = 8.0029, p = 0.005), previous use of orthodontic treatment(s) gender (chi-square with two degrees of freedom = 4.9005, p = 0.027), and current or previous abnormal bite and gender (chi-square with two degrees of freedom = 4.4447, p = 0.035). No other statistically significant relationships were observed between ESS and dental health outcomes in our sample, or by subgroup. Conclusions: Findings from our study show that higher scores on the ESS are related to certain oral health indicators, with some notable differences by academic standing and gender. Future studies are needed that include a diverse sample of college students and incorporate a clinical measure of OSA in this population. Universities can take an active role in addressing OSA and related issues by launching health campaigns, raising awareness through workshops and seminars, and fostering a culture of proactive well-being among students and staff.

Do texto à cena: Os Sertões - a luta, primeira parte

Jesus, Carla Aurora Santos de 05 August 2011 (has links)
From the word in the book to the word in the stage. To uncover the paths that implementation is the main objective of this study. Our study investigated the implementation and transformation of the Euclidian work on the play, the passage of a discourse structure for a different device enunciation. The piece: \"The Fight, first part\" (A Luta, primeira parte) comprises the beginning of the Canudo\'s War (Campanha de Canudos) and the first three expeditions. Demonstrating a stand-alone character and universal this piece, even though it\'s one of the five parts of \"Rebellion in the Backlands\" (Os Sertões), it carries diverse representative elements of all work done and especially those elements that characterize and identify the staging of the group Teat(r)o Oficina Uzyna Uzona run by the stage director, playwright and actor José Celso Martinez Corrêa. We tailor our work in the analysis of the spectacle through the scenes previously chosen as samples, in which we observed: a dramatization of the text and its scenic interpretation. All of this analysis was based on monitoring the rehearsals (open and closed), in a lot of the presentations, the discussions between members of the group, the commentaries of the director Zé Celso and in interviews with members of the group. We look to describe a process of creation that when presented with numerous references (historical, actual, universal, theatrical and even personal) it\'s not just a simple association of ideas or a mere categorization. Our intention was to give visibility to the work of creation.

Sven-Harrys : Att leva med konsten

Sjögren, Molly January 2011 (has links)
