Toward the abstract: the importation of british and american theories on the brazilian literary criticism.

Cunha, Rodrigo Ennes da 23 August 2010 (has links)
Throughout the twentieth century, there was a significant increase in the import of Anglo-American theories in Brazilian literary criticism, not always corresponding to a domestic demand. One consequence of this process was the gradual withdrawal from part of academic research and the theoretical and methodological resources used for teaching literature in elementary education. This work deals with an important moment of this phenomenon: the import of the New Criticism made by Afrânio Coutinho. The goal is to demonstrate how this case can be interpreted as the first step in a process of theoretical abstraction that is now naturalized in the study of literature in Brazilian universities.

Novo estranhamento e consciência política: gêneros literários em Perdido Street Station, de China Miéville / New weird and political consciousness: literary genres in China Miévilles Perdido Street Station

Amaral, George Augusto do 27 September 2017 (has links)
The purpose of the present dissertation is to make a reading of China Miévilles novel Perdido Street Station (2000), from the perspective of literary theory and materialist criticism. Considered a pioneer in the way it uses the fantastic to portray the social, political and economic contradictions of reality and at the same time mixing conventions and themes derived from Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror, the novel turned out to be the main reference for the emergence of a new literary subgenre, the New Weird. In order to make a profound study of this definition and understand the formal devices and structures present in the novel, we approached in detail the discussions of authors and critics regarding the New Weird. Based on that it was possible to identify the strategies for the articulation of the genres of fantastic literature present in the novel and to verify that it has close affiliation with the structure of the Formation Novel - Bildungsroman - and also to the Critical Dystopia novel. We argued that it is mainly based on the resources provided by these two genres that the novel develops the content of social criticism and meditation on material reality, discussing subjects such as alienation, fragmentation and mechanization of the individual under the scope of the capitalist mode of production; commodity fetishism and consumerism; racial and ethnic identity politics; as well as culture and hybridism in postmodernity. We concluded that the novel effectively innovates both in the way it articulates the genres and how it enables meditations on contemporary reality, making use of the different categories of estrangement provided by the fantastic literature.

Is Taiwan Ready for Post-modernism? A Comparative Study between Sweden and Taiwan.

Unal, Baris 05 July 2010 (has links)
This study examines changes in culture, economics and politics in Taiwan. Ronald Inglehart suggests that culture, economics and politics are mutually connected and these dynamics shape each other over time. Richard Florida argues that the driving force behind the transformation of a society¡¦s lifestyles, worldview and values is the rise of human creativity. In order to observe the changes over time, Inglehart and his colleagues have been collecting data through questionnaires (World Values Survey) in countries around the world. The purpose of this study is to measure and interpret the recent changes in Taiwan. Data collected from Taiwan is compiled in a unique database for analysis. This paper discusses the findings from this analysis and interprets the direction of change brought by intergenerational change. In addition, a cross-cultural analysis between Sweden and Taiwan is performed using the latest data collected from the two countries. Results suggest that Taiwan¡¦s shift is in the direction of Postmodernity. In addition, younger people are found to be more tolerant against different groups of people compared to the older generation.

Hamlet's Objective Mode and Early Modern Materialist Philosophy

Lacy, Rachel January 2015 (has links)
Hamlet's tragedy is constructed as a perspective of matter that is destined for decay, and this "objective," or "object-focused," mode of viewing the material world enhances theatrical and theological understandings of the play's props, figurative language, and characters. Hamlet's "objective mode" evokes early modern materialist philosophies of vanitas and memento mori, and it is communicated in theatre through semiotic means, whereby material items stand for moral ideas according to an established sign-signified relation. Extending an objective reading to Hamlet's characters reveals their function as images, or two-dimensional emblems, in moments of slowing narrative time. In the graveyard scene (5.1), characters and theatrical props cooperate to materialize the objective perspective. As a prop, Ophelia's corpse complicates the objective mode through its semantic complexity. Thus, she stands apart from other characters as one that both serves to construct and to deconstruct the objective mode. Hamlet's tragic outlook, which depends upon an understanding of matter as destined for decay, and of material items as ends in themselves rather than vehicles for spiritual transformation, is an early modern notion concurrent with theological debates surrounding the Eucharist. Drawing upon art-historical, linguistic, feminist, theological, and theatrical approaches, this thesis contributes to concurrent discourse on Hamlet's tragic genre.

Dois modos de ler: o poder de aferição da crítica materialista em Raymond Williams e Roberto Schwarz / Two ways of reading: the power of assessment of the materialist criticism in Raymond Williams and Roberto Schwarz

Morelli, Adriana Fernandes 12 April 2010 (has links)
The aim of this study is to present a reading of The Country and the City, by Raymond Williams, published in 1973, and Duas Meninas, by Roberto Schwarz, 1997. In order to exemplify Williamss way of approaching literature, I investigate how the critic analyses the work of Thomas Hardy, especially the novel Jude, the Obscure. Departing from the idea that cultural criticism could and should be an instrument of social assessment, both Williams and Schwarz question the hegemonic culture and the literary tradition, with consequences both to society and literature, in the works mentioned above. In Cambridge, Williams realizes that there usually is a problem of perspective whenever the country is depicted in the English literature, a problem connected to the ideology that sustains the capitalist system in the center. To him, both progress and democracy can be put to doubt in there. In Brazil, the periphery of capitalism, Roberto Schwarz points to the reinstatement of old social problems, at times apparently almost to be left behind, as proven by the social dynamics found in Minha Vida de Menina, by Helena Morley. Therefore, in this dissertation I discuss the main topics of the theoretical apparatus of Williams and Schwarz, aiming at demonstrating how both critics approach literature, society and tradition. The main drive of this paper is to demonstrate that literary criticism could and should be a tool to enlighten the knowledge a society has of itself, and that, seen through the perspective of these critics, Brazil and England, center and periphery of capitalism, are pieces that have a lot to reveal about each-other.

O choque dos mundos ou uma leitura materialista da peça \'And things that go bump in the night\', de Terrence McNally / A study of the play \' And things that go bump in the night\', by American playwright Terrence McNally

Biscaro, Roberto Rillo 01 December 2006 (has links)
This is a study of the play And Things that Go Bump in the Night, by American playwright Terrence McNally, written in the first half of the 1960\'s. Using cultural materialism as my theoretical basis, I try to establish the connection between forms and themes found in the play to the historical conditions by the time the play was written. My conclusion is that the \"bump\" alluded to in the title of the play is the result of the turmoil produced by the shift from a stage of capitalism to a new stage of this mode of production. More specifically, I will show that in McNally\'s work one can already detect the directions followed by the social movements of the 1960\'s - especially the Gay Movement - as a consequence of the very need for the expansion of capital.

Political Climate : How Environmental Attitudes relates to Support for Radical Right-wing Parties in the Nordic Countries

Duregård, Agnes January 2019 (has links)
The Nordic countries are geographically, culturally and politically close, and have all witnessed an upsurge in support for radical right-wing parties over the past decades. Although the five parties: the Danish People’s Party, the Finns Party, the Icelandic Progressive Party, the Norwegian Progress Party, and the Sweden Democrats, are different when it comes to party history and how accepted they have been by other parties, they are today similar in their anti-immigration rhetoric, their critique of the established elites and to some extent their welfare chauvinism. According to theories on radical right-wing parties and environmental attitudes, caring for nature and the environment would make a person less probable to vote for a radical right-wing party. Using data from the European Social Survey, the relationship between environmental attitudes and radical right-wing support is examined. The initial results support this thesis, but when adding control variables the relationship is no longer significant. However, when looking at the countries separately, it shows that the relationship between environmental values and radical right-wing voting varies across the Nordic countries. Here, Norway stands out as the country with the strongest negative relationship between environmental values and support for radical right-wing parties.
