The factors determining the under-utilisation of maternity obstetric units within the Sedibeng districtMthethwa, Raisibe Olga 30 November 2006 (has links)
This descriptive quantitative survey attempted to identify reasons why pregnant women who have been screened as low-risk pregnancies failed to utilise MOUs for the delivery of their babies. The objective of the study was to investigate the factors determining the under-utilisation of Sharpville MOU in Emfuleni sub-district.
The research population comprised all postnatal mothers residing in Sharpeville who delivered their babies at hospital and who were screened as low-risk pregnancies; the accessible convenience sample consisted of all postnatal mothers who attended Sharpeville Clinic for their six weeks follow-up postnatal care from 5 December 2005 till 6 January 2006 and who were willing to complete questionnaires.
Data was collected by means of a structured questionnaire and analysed using the SPSS computer program.
Major factors drawn from the study that influence their decision on place of delivery were nurses' attitudes, lack of doctors, transport, privacy and resources. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

Perceptions of midwives and pregnant women of the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV programme at the ante-natal care unit and maternity ward at the Johan Heyns community health centre in tne Sedibeng District, GautengThithi, Potetsa Elizabeth 02 1900 (has links)
The study reports on the perceptions of the midwives and pregnant women of the
PMTCT of HIV programme at the antenatal care and maternity ward at the Johan Heyns
Community Health Centre. A qualitative approach was adopted to conduct the study.
Purposive sampling was used to select participants and was informed by social
behavioural theories. Data was collected using interviews and analysed using thematic
categorisation. The findings show that at the first PMTCT encounter participants had
little to no knowledge of the PMTCT programme, generally displayed a lack of interest,
experienced emotional distress, and fear at the thought of having to disclosing their
HIV-positive status to their partners/family and had certain trepidations about
participating in the PMTCT programme. The participants’ perception on their roles was
that their roles were interlinked, midwife needs the recipients (pregnant woman) and
pregnant woman needs the provider (midwife) therefore one cannot do PMTCT without
the other. The study recommends that the capacity building of pregnant women be
optimised, that PMTCT awareness campaigns for women of childbearing age should be
a priority and PMTCT skills to be prerequisite for midwives deployed to ANC clinics and
maternity ward units. / Health Studies / M. A. (Social Behaviour Studies in HIV/AIDS)

Study project (Mnutr) -- University of Stellenbosch, 2005. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Quality nursing care is characterised by clinical decisions based on critical and analytical
thinking. The assessment, planning and implementation information which is used as basis
for decision making must be recorded in the patient's record/file. The questlon is rai_sed
whetherthe patient's record does indeed reflect critical and analytical thinking.
The focus on the midwife's practices during professional conduct hearings which relate to
intrapartum service delivery, led to the specific choice of population, namely intrapartum
services delivery in Levell hospitals in the Western Cape.
A non-experimental study whereby qualitative and quantitative data were collected, was
performed in six (6) Levell hospitals. Check lists were compiled to evaluate the structure
and facilities in which midwifery practice is executed. The records of 128 patients were
analysed to specifically investigate the nature and extent of critical and analytical decisionmaking
by midwives, and the extent to which the midwife really applies reflective
practices.
The results showed that record-keeping is not done optimally; that the partogram, which
- - ----
is a comprehensive evaluation of the progress of_lab_2~1isJ not used and that the records
did not indicate that the midwife applies critical and analytical thinking and acts
accordingly. Recommendationsare that the proposals for the improvement of intrapartum
service delivery, as made by Odendal (2004: ii-iv) and the Department of Health (2000:
42), are to receive immediate attention. It appears as if protocols and guidelines for
emergency action and general safe practices do exist, but are not enforced. Continued inservice
training receive priority attention.
Core words: critical analytical thinking; midwife's practice and practices; intrapartum care
is in ses (6) vlak 1- hospitale uitgevoer.
Voortgesette indiensopleiding moet as 'n prioritieit
aangespreek word.
Kernwoorde: kritiese analitiese denke; vroedvroupraktykvoering; vroedvroupraktyke,
intrapartumsorgdienslewering.

Zabezpečení žen v těhotenství a mateřství a ochrana jejich práv v ČR a EU / Social security for women in pregnancy and maternity and the protection of their rights in the Czech Republic and the EUPérezová, Dana January 2014 (has links)
Social security for women in pregnancy and maternity and the protection of their rights in the Czech Republic and the EU The objective of this diploma thesis is to describe and analyse the topic of protection and social security of pregnant women and mothers in the Czech Republic and the EU. The reason of such protection lies in the fact that during pregnancy and early maternity women and their families are significantly limited in their possibilities of working, which is connected with a decrease in the family income and a certain difficulty in the social life. The main part of the thesis consists of five chapters. The first chapter concerns the family policy, which is a state policy branch that focuses on the support of a family, family life and other related institutes and activities, e. g. marriage, motivation of employers to employ pregnant women and mothers or parents, support of institutions that provide care and education to small children etc. The section dedicated to the social security funding explains possible resources and methods of financing the social protection used within contemporary developed political and economic systems. The second chapter highlights the principal documents of the European Union and international organizations (United Nations, International Labour...

Určování rodičovství / Determination of parenthoodHrušáková, Alexandra January 2012 (has links)
Determination of Parenthood - Alexandra Hrušáková Abstract In my thesis "Determination of Parenthood", I focused on the largest area of family law. Everyone's life is influenced by his family the whole life. And there are many consequences connected to the relation between a child and his parents. My topic responds lively to the changes brought by current scientific and technical progress and dynamic development and metamorphoses in our society. I tried to describe it in a complex way, but in order to put accent on the most important segments of this problem. From the times of ancient Rome there exists the principle "mater semper certa est, pater incertus", which means that the identity of the mother is always certain, but the father isn't. However there exist some situations in which the principle could not be so clear. These situations created objective of this thesis. This thesis is divided into ten chapters. In every single chapter I wasn't only working with Czech law, but I also attempted to compare it to legislation of another countries The first chapter called Parenthood and Child is dealing with the theoretical definition of the components of a relation among parents and children and the rights and obligations rising from this relation. The next chapter presents The Right of the child to know his or...

Motherhood in Oxfordshire c. 1945-1970 : a study of attitudes, experiences and idealsDavis, Angela January 2007 (has links)
This thesis examines women’s experiences of, and attitudes towards, motherhood between 1945 and 1970. The thesis is based on ninety-two oral history interviews with women from different locations in Oxfordshire – rural, urban and suburban. Oral history is a methodology that can provide objective information about women’s lives, but also reveals their thoughts and feelings through the subjectivity of their accounts. The thesis forms a qualitative study looking at six aspects of motherhood. The first is the portrayal of motherhood in contemporary social surveys and community studies. The second is the issue of education for motherhood and questions over whether mothering was innate to women or needed to be taught. Thirdly, the thesis investigates maternity care provision and disputes over who should provide it (namely midwives, GPs or consultants); where this care should take place; and whether pregnancy and childbirth were medical conditions at all. Next it discusses theories of child development and discourses of ‘good’ and ‘bad’ mothers, in order to look at women’s relationship with authorities on childcare. Then it considers critiques of working mothers and debates over whether women should work outside the home; if so, when they should do so; and what strategies they should employ so that work and motherhood could be combined. Finally it analyses popular conceptions of motherhood, marriage and the family, and how the interviewees related to representations of the ideal mother figure during the immediate post-war decades and beyond. The thesis concludes by demonstrating the real difficulties mothers faced during the period 1945-1970; that interviewees from all types of background shared an understanding of how ‘normal’ women should behave; and also that the stereotyping of the period as one of conservatism before the changes that began in the later 1960s and 1970s means the ways in which women were already organising themselves to improve their lives has tended to be disregarded.
