Meson production in pd collisions

Meson production in proton-deuteron collisions has been studied using the WASA detector facility at the CELSIUS storage ring in Uppsala. Data were obtained at two different beam energies, 1360 MeV and 1450 MeV, slightly above threshold for η and ω mesons. The differential cross sections of pd → 3He ω constitute the first measurements of this reaction covering the whole angular range. The ω angular distributions are isotropic at 1360 MeV but have strong forward and backward enhancements at 1450 MeV. Theoretical calculations using a two-step model fail to reproduce the shapes of the angular distributions and underestimate the total cross sections. The tensor polarisation of the ω meson has been derived from the measured angular distributions of the ω decay products. The π+ π- π0 and the π0 γ decay channels gave consistent results, showing that the ω meson is produced unpolarised at both energies. This is in contrast to a recent MOMO measurement which showed that the Φ meson is produced almost completely polarised in the pd → 3HeΦ reaction. Different production dynamics of ω and Φ mesons close to threshold raises the question whether the Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka (OZI) rule is applicable in low-energy nucleon-nucleon reactions. The angular distributions of the η meson produced in the pd → 3He η reaction are strongly enhanced for forward going η mesons at both energies. The σ(pd → 3He π+ π- π0 )/σ(pd → 3He π0 π0 π0 ) ratio has been measured and discussed in terms of isospin amplitudes. A rough estimate of the pd → 3He π0 π0 π0 π0 cross sections has also been obtained and the pd → 3He η π0 reaction has been studied for the first time near threshold.

Mesonic fusion - pion and eta meson production in light ion nuclear fusion reactions

The present thesis describes two experiments performed in the storage ring CELSIUS at The Svedberg Laboratory in Uppsala. In the first experiment the importance of three - nucleon clustering in the six - nucelon system was investigated. The total cross section for the production of the ground state and the 3.56 MeV second excited state of 6Li in the 3He(3He,6Li)π+ reaction has been measured at two beam energies, 261.1 and 262.5 MeV, corresponding to center - of - mass energies 1.2 and 1.9 MeV above the production threshold for the 3.56 MeV state. For the ground state the result was 347 ± 84 ± 42 and 92 ± 84 ± 11 nb respectively. The result for the 3.56 MeV state, 104 ± 23 ± 12 and 56 ± 35 ± 7 nb respectively, is compared to the result of a previous study where the 3.56 MeV state was populated in the d(4He,6Li)π0 reaction. In the second experiment a clean sample of 5×105 eta mesons was prepared by means of the d(p,3He)η reaction. Eta production was tagged by the precise determination of the kinetic energy of the associated 3He ions. In the subsequent decay of eta mesons, channels with lepton - anti - lepton pairs were studied in the WASA detector. In a separate study properties of the WASA deuterium pellet target were investigated and in particular the effects on the beam of the beam - target interactions. In both sets of experiments the fused nuclear system was detected by means of a zero - degree spectrometer with a semiconductor detector telescope. Choosing the detectors to match the rather different requirements, precise information regarding the identity and the momentum of the detected ions could be obtained in both cases.

Search for the Rare Decay $B_s^0 \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ at D0

Results of the search for the rare decay $B_s^0 \to \mu^+ \mu^-$ using data collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider are presented. This analysis covers the full Run II data set, corresponding to approximately 10.4~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity in $p\bar{p}$ collisions at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV. The analysis used new variables and a multivariate technique to improve the background reduction. After seeing fewer events than expected from background, a new Tevatron best observed limit was set on the branching fraction of the decay at $\cal{B}$($B_s^0 \to \mu^+ \mu^-$) $< 15 \times 10^{-9}$ ($12 \times 10^{-9}$) at the 95\% (90\%) C.L.

Scalar Mesons In Radiative Phi-meson Decays Into Neutral K-meson States

Radiative Decays of the phi-meson to the scalar mesons f0(980) and a0(980) are investigated within the framework of charged kaon loop model for both point-like scalar mesons and for scalar mesons with extended structure. Then, the radiative phi-meson decay into neutral K-meson is studied via a two step mechanism in which the scalar mesons couple the final state to the phi-meson through the charged kaon loop. The branching ratio of this decay is calculated and it is shown that this reaction will not provide a significant background to the measurements of phi-meson into neutral K-meson states decay for testing CP violation.

Test des Standardmodells im B-Mesonen-Sektor durch Mischungsphänomene und seltene Zerfälle

In dieser Arbeit werden die seltenen Zerfälle b -&amp;gt; s gamma und b -&amp;gt; s g, sowie die BB¯-Oszillation einschließlich QCD-Korrekturen in Next-to-Leading-Log-Approximation untersucht. Es handelt sich hierbei um Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) Prozesse, welche auf dem Born-Niveau innerhalb des Standardmodells verboten sind. Diese Prozesse sind besonders geeignet zum Testen des Standardmodells, da mögliche Erweiterungen potentiell denselben Beitrag liefern können. Als Erweiterungen werden das 2-Higgs-Dublett-Modell, Links-Rechts-Modelle und insbesondere das Minimale Supersymmetrische Standardmodell diskutiert. Am Beispiel der BB¯-Oszillation wird gezeigt, daß die Bestimmung der Wilson-Koeffizienten inabhängig von der Behandlung der leichten Felder ist. Dazu wird zum einen die dimensionale Regularisierung der IR-Divergenzen und zum anderen die Einführung von IR-Regulatoren benutzt. Für das BB¯-Mixing werden mit Hilfe der sehr genau gemessenen Massenaufspaltung &amp;quot;Delta m B&amp;quot; Aussagen zu (V td V* tb)² getroffen. Weiterhin wird das Verzweigungsverhältnis BR[B -&amp;gt; &amp;quot;X s gamma&amp;quot;] im Standardmodell und im Minimalen Supersymmetrischen Standardmodell bestimmt. / Calculations for the rare decays b -&amp;gt; s gamma and b -&amp;gt; s g, as well as the BB¯-mixing inclusive QCD-corrections in Next-to-Leading-Log-Approximation are presented throughout this work. The decays and the mixing are caused by Flavor Changing Neutral Current (FCNC) processes, which are absent on the tree-level within the framework of the Standard-Model. Hence these processes are qualified to test the validity of the Standard-Model, because possible extensions may provide similar contributions. Considered extensions are the 2-Higgs-Doublet-Model, Left-Right-Models and the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard-Model. It is shown that the determination of the Wilson-coefficients is independent of the treatmentof the light fields for the case of the BB¯-mixing. For this proof the dimensional regularisation of the IR-divergences on one side and a regulator mass for the light fields on the other side isutilized. The well-known value for the mass splitting &amp;quot;Delta m B&amp;quot; available from the BB¯-oscillation is applied to deduce (V td V* tb)². Furthermore the branching ratio BR[B -&amp;gt; &amp;quot;X s gamma&amp;quot;] is calculated within the Standard-Model and the Supersymmetric Standard-Model.

Measurement of the Partial Branching Fraction for Inclusive Semileptonic B Meson Decays to Light Hadrons B-&amp;gt;Xu l nu and an Improved Determination of the Quark-Mixing Matrix Element |V_ub|

This thesis presents an analysis of inclusive semileptonic $B \to X_u e \nu$ decays using approximately 454 million $\Upsilon(4S) \to B \bar{B}$ decays collected during the years 1999 to 2008 with the BABAR detector. The electron energy, $E_e$, and the invariant mass squared of the electron-neutrino pair,$ q^2$, are reconstructed, where the neutrino kinematics is deduced from the decay products of both B mesons. The final hadronic state,$ X_u$, consists of a sum of many hadronic channels, each of which contains at least one $u$ quark. The variables $q^2$ and $E_e$ are then combined to compute the maximum kinematically allowed invariant mass squared of the hadronic system, $s_h^{max}$. Using these kinematic quantities, the partial branching fraction, $\Delta BR(B \to X_u e \nu)$, unfolded for detector effects, is measured to be $\Delta BR(E_e&amp;gt;2.0 GeV, s_h^{max}&amp;lt;3.52 GeV^2) = (3.33 \pm 0.18 \pm 0.21) \times 10^{-4} in the $\Upsilon(4S)$ and \Delta \tilde{\BR}(\tilde E_e&amp;gt;1.9 GeV, \tilde {s}^{max}_{h} &amp;lt; 3.5 GeV^2) = (4.57 \pm 0.24 \pm 0.32) \times 10^{-4} in the $B$ meson rest frames. The quoted errors are statistical and systematic, respectively. The CKM matrix element $|V_{ub}|$ is determined from the measured $\Delta \tilde{\BR}$ using theoretical calculation based on Heavy Quark Expansion. The result is $|V_{ub}| = (4.19 \pm 0.18{}^{+0.26}_{-0.20} {}^{+0.26}_{-0.25}) \times 10^{-3}, where the errors represent experimental uncertainties, uncertainties from HQE parameters and theoretical uncertainties, respectively.

A comparative study is done on the Mini Drift Chamber (MDC) and the Scintillating Electromagnetic Calorimeter (SEC), two main components of the WASA detector. The purpose of the study is to determine the most effective way to calculate the mass of the η−meson by determining the invariant mass of the final products in the η → e+e− decay. When calculating the invariant mass of the lepton pair the distribution from the MDC had a standard deviation of σMDC = (4.212 ± 0.080) · 10−2 GeV/c2 and from the SEC σSEC = (3.563±0.011)·10−2 GeV/c2. To get a precise measurement, events with a lepton scattering at a polar angle below 30◦ have to be rejected, and to achieve highest precision, it is favorable to use the SEC for momenta above 0.28 GeV/c and the MDC below, respectively. In this study, a combined method is developed which results in an invariant mass resolution of σMix = (3.341±0.012)·10−2 GeV/c2. Thus, the combined method gives a small improvement compared to using the SEC alone, but a considerable improvement compared to using only the MDC.

Measurement of charmed hadron production in e±p deep inelastic scattering with the ZEUS detector

Charmed hadron production has been studied in 225 pb<sup>-1</sup> of data collected with the ZEUS detector in the HERA-II runnning period. Studies were made in the D* → D<sup>0</sup>π → Kππ decay channel to determine the potential for the microvertex detector to improve charm signals. Integrated cross sections were measured for the decays D<sup>0</sup> → K<sup>0</sup><sub>s</sub>π⁺ π⁻, D<sup>±</sup> → K<sup>0</sup><sub>s</sub> π<sup>±</sup>, D<sup>±</sup>_s → K<sup>0</sup>s K<sup>±</sup> and Lambda<sup>±</sup>_c → Lambda<sup>0</sup>π<sup>±</sup> in the kinematic region 5< Q² < 1000 GeV², 0.02 < y < 0.7, 1.5 < pT(D,Lambda_c) < 20.0 GeV, -1.6 < pseudorapidity(D, Lambda_c) < 1.6. The D<sup>0</sup> cross section was additionally measured down to pT(D<sup>0</sup>) > 1.0 GeV. Differential cross sections as a function of Q², x, pT(D) and pseudorapidity(D) were measured for the D<sup>0</sup>, D<sup>±</sup>, and D_s<sup>±</sup> channels. The measurements were compared to next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, and good agreement found for all variables in all channels over the measured kinematic region. The strangeness-suppression factor, gamma_s = D_s<sup>±</sup>/(D<sup>±</sup> + D<sup>0</sup>), was measured and found to be in good agreement with values previously measured at HERA and elsewhere, and with the DJANGOH and RAPGAP Monte Carlo. The ratio of charmed baryons to mesons, Lambda_c<sup>±</sup>/(D<sup>±</sup> + D<sup>0</sup>), was measured and also found to be in good agreement with Monte Carlo.
