Στην εργασία αυτή περιγράφεται η ολοκληρωμένη ανάπτυξη και υλοποίηση συστήματος συλλογής και ελέγχου ποιότητας μετεωρολογικών δεδομένων που έχει τεθεί σε πλήρη λειτουργία από το καλοκαίρι του 2011 στο εργαστήριο Φυσικής της Ατμόσφαιρας του τμήματος Φυσικής του Πανεπιστημίου Πατρών. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο περιγράφονται οι βασικές έννοιες των μετρούμενων φυσικών παραμέτρων. Οι μετρούμενες φυσικές παράμετροι είναι η θερμοκρασία, η σχετική υγρασία, η ταχύτητα ανέμου, η διεύθυνση ανέμου, η ατμοσφαιρική πίεση, το ύψος υετού, η ολική και η διάχυτη ηλιακή ακτινοβολία. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο περιγράφονται τα γενικά στοιχεία του σταθμού (θέση) καθώς και οι βασικές αρχές λειτουργίας των οργάνων. Τα όργανα που χρησιμοποιούνται είναι το θερμοϋγρόμετρο, ο ανεμοδείκτης, το ανεμόμετρο, το βροχόμετρο, το βαρόμετρο και τα πυρανόμετρα. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο περιγράφεται ολοκληρωμένο το σύστημα συλλογής και μετρήσεων καθώς και τα χαρακτηριστικά των οργάνων και των συσκευών που έχουν εγκατασταθεί. Στο σύστημα συμπεριλαμβάνονται εκτός των οργάνων τα συστήματα συλλογής και καταγραφής (data loggers) καθώς και το σύστημα μεταφοράς (modem και καλωδιώσεις). Στο τέταρτο κεφάλαιο αναφέρεται ο προγραμματισμός των δύο τμημάτων του σταθμού. Στο πέμπτο κεφάλαιο περιγράφονται η διαχείριση μετεωρολογικών δεδομένων, ο έλεγχος ποιότητας και η ανάλυση των δεδομένων. / This paper describes the development and implementation of an integrated system of collection and quality control of meteorological data that has been fully operational since the summer of 2011 at the laboratory of Atmospheric Physics, Physics Department, University of Patras. The first chapter describes the basic concepts of the measured meteorological parameters. These are temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, atmospheric pressure, amount of precipitation, total and diffuse radiation. The second chapter describes the general elements of the station (position) and the basic operating principles of the instruments used (humidity temperature probe, potentiometer windvane, anemometer, rain gauge, barometer and the pyranometer). The third chapter describes the integrated system for data collection and the characteristics of the instruments and devices that are installed. The system includes instruments for the data collection and recording (data loggers) and transfer (modem and wiring). The fourth chapter deals with the planning of the two parts of the station. The fifth chapter describes the meteorological data management, quality control and analysis.

Variability and interannual trends in the climatology of radon-222 at two Southern Hemisphere coastal baseline sites

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This thesis characterises and discusses two continuous coastal Southern Hemispheric (SH) atmospheric radon (222Rn) signals. Large-scale atmospheric circulation patterns are important components of the climate system implicated in driving catastrophic events such as extreme droughts and mega-wildfires and radon measurements at coastal sites provide valuable information on interactions of terrestrial and oceanic air masses on regional to hemispheric scales. The main collaborating SH atmospheric observatories in this study are located at Cape Grim (CGO, Tasmania, 1992-2017) and Cape Point (CPO, South Africa, 1999-2017). The radon signal from a high-altitude remote island oceanic site in the Northern Hemisphere Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO, Hawaii, 2004-2015) is also incorporated for comparison purposes. The CGO radon signal is the longest and most sensitive in current existence. A variety of statistical, spectral, trend, back-trajectory and trajectory density methods are utilized in this study to illuminate features of the datasets on multiple scales. Strongly skewed radon distributions occur, with a large number of events falling into a compact range of low values (corresponding to marine air-masses) and a smaller number of events spread over a wide range of high-radon values (continental air-masses). Making use of Fast Fourier Transform power spectral analysis, prominent periodicities are identified on diurnal and annual scales. Inter-annual variations in seasonal and diurnal radon and meteorological characteristics, indicating changes in the continental/oceanic atmospheric mixing state, are evident especially during the period from 2012 to 2017, perhaps associated with the strong El-Niño southern oscillation centred on 2015. A slow but systematic decline in CGO and CPO radon levels is evident over the dataset, associated with fewer continental and more marine air-masses impacting the coastal stations. The long-term trends observed in the atmospheric radon signal may indicate changes in SH circulation patterns over time, perhaps associated with climate change effects.

The Relationship Between Meteorological Factors and Ice Conditions in Hudson Bay

<p> This study focuses on the relations hip between ice cover and wind frequency, wind speed and air temperature. Results showed that there are four distinct MELT periods along the west coast of Hudson Bay. With a standardized MELT period, stations are generally higher correlated with their southern neighbours. Onshore wind frequencies increased signficantly from the NOMELT to the MELT period, and were associated with air temperatures 3 to 4 degrees Celsius colder than those of offshore winds. </p> <p> Mean air temperature was most highly correlated with percent ice cover. Ice cover was most strongly correlated with mean air temperature at Chesterfield Inlet and least so at Churchill. Thus, freeze-up and melt at Chesterfield Inlet are most strongly influenced by air temperature whereas at Churchill, other factors, presumably wind direction and currents, strongly influence the ice cover. Ice cover was most strongly influenced by air temperature during the NOMELT period. This shows that cold temperatures hasten freezeback more than warm temperatures hasten MELT. </p> / Thesis / Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Comparison of three vertical refractivity profiles in the Gulf region

In this paper, a set of local radiosonde meteorological data, from 1990 to 2005, have been used to statistically analyze the refractivity gradient, DeltaN, at the lowest 65 m, 100 m and 1 km of the atmosphere above the surface of the Earth in the Gulf region. These three levels are the reference atmospheric layers in which the refractivity gradients have been evaluated by the ITU-R Recommendations P.453-10 and P.452-12The vertical variations of the refractivity profile aredisplayed through the cumulative distributions of the refractivity gradients at the targeted levels. The obtained results are compared for the three layers and also compared with the estimated values in the ITU maps and tables when available. Downscaling Meteorological Predictions for Short-Term Hydrologic Forecasting

<p> This study investigates the use of large scale ensemble weather predictions provided by the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) medium range forecast (MRF) modeling system, for short-term hydrologic forecasting. The weather predictors are used to downscale daily precipitation and temperature series at two meteorological stations in the Saguenay watershed in northeastern Canada. Three data-driven methods, namely, statistical downscaling model (SDSM), time lagged feedforward neural network (TLFN), and evolutionary polynomial regression (EPR), are used as downscaling models and their downscaling results are compared. The downscaled results of the best models are used as additional inputs in two hydrological models, Hydrologiska Byrans Vattenbalansavdelning (HBV) and Bayesian neural networks (BNN), for up to 14 day ahead reservoir inflow and river flow forecasting. The performance of the two hydrological forecasting models is compared, the ultimate objective being to improve 7 to 14 day ahead forecasts. </p> <p> The downscaling results show that all the three models have good performance in downscaling temperature time series, the correlation between the observed and downscaled data is more than 0.90, however the downscaling results are less accurate for precipitation, the correlation coefficient is no more than 0.62. TLFN and EPR models have quite close performance in most cases, and they both perform better than SDSM. </p> <p> Therefore the TLFN downscaled meteorological data are used as predictors in the HBV and BNN hydrological models for up to 14 day ahead reservoir inflow and river flow forecasting, and the forecasting results are compared with the case where no downscaled data is included. The results show that for both reservoir inflow and river flow, HBV models have better performance when including downscaled meteorological data, while there is no significant improvement for the BNN models. When comparing the performance of HBV and BNN models through scatter plots, it can be found that BNN models perform better in low flow forecasting than HBV models, while less good in peak flow forecasting. </p> / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)
