Study of SAPS-like flows with the King Salmon SuperDARN radar

Drayton, Robyn Anne 06 November 2006 (has links)
This thesis has two focuses. The major focus is an investigation of the nature of high-velocity ~2 km/s)ionospheric flows occasionally detected by the King Salmon SuperDARN radar at relatively low magnetic latitudes of 65^0. The second focus is a validation work on the quality of SuperDARN convection measurements. As an alternative convection-monitoring instrument, an ion drift meter onboard the DMSP satellite was chosen for comparison with SuperDARN. This study includes a broad range of velocities of up to ~1.5 km/s. Consideration of very large velocities is fundamentally important for successful research on the major topic of the thesis.<p>The validation work is performed first. Two approaches are undertaken. The first approach considers data at the raw level. SuperDARN F region line-of-sight velocities are directly compared with DMSP cross-track ion drifts in approximately the same directions. More than 200 satellite passes over the fields of view of five Northern Hemisphere and four Southern Hemisphere radars are considered. It is shown that all radars exhibit overall consistency with DMSP measurements and a linear fit line to the data has a slope of 0.8 with a tendency for SuperDARN velocities to be smaller. Radar echo range effects and the role of spatial inhomogeneity and temporal variations of the convection pattern are investigated. SuperDARN convection maps were generated for select events for which SuperDARN l-o-s data agree almost ideally with DMSP measurements.<p>Convection maps were obtained using all Northern Hemisphere SuperDARN radars. The full convection vectors were found to be in reasonable agreement with the DMSP ion drifts, although a small deterioration (~10%) was noticed. The overall agreement between SuperDARN and DMSP measurements implies SuperDARN observations are reliable for velocity magnitudes of up to ~1.5 km/s, and SuperDARN radars are suitable instruments for studying extremely fast ionospheric flows. These results also imply that radar measurements can be merged with DMSP measurements into a common data set to provide more reliable convection maps.<p>For the main focus of the thesis, a statistical investigation of the King Salmon radar echoes was performed to determine typical echo characteristics and compare them with data from other SuperDARN radars. It is shown that King Salmon regularly observes high-velocity echoes in the dusk sector at ~21:00 MLT and ~65^0 MLat. Individual events are presented with line-of-sight velocities (observed with the L-shell aligned beams) as high as 2 km/s. Statistically, the enhanced flows are the largest and cover the greatest area in the winter and are the smallest and cover the least area in the summer. Similar fast flows were discovered in the Unwin radar data (in the Southern Hemisphere, lowest magnetic latitude ~57^0) that became available near the completion time of this thesis. It is also shown that statistically, the Stokkseyri radar, which observes in the auroral zone and has a similar azimuthal orientation as King Salmon, does not observe similar high-velocity echoes. Geophysical conditions for the onset of high-velocity King Salmon flows in several individual events are then investigated. It is shown that fast flows are excited in close association with substorm progression near the King Salmon field of view. By comparing SuperDARN data with optical images obtained from the IMAGE satellite and particle data from the DMSP satellites it is shown that velocity enhancement begins at substorm onset and peaks 20-50 minutes later over a range of latitudes including the auroral and sub-auroral regions. During the substorm recovery phase, as bright aurora shifts poleward, exceptionally fast flows can be excited at the equatorial edge of the electron auroral oval and these flows can be classified as sub-auroral polarization stream (SAPS) flows. Variability of SAPS flows and their relationship to auroral oval processes are discussed. Finally, several suggestions for further research are presented.

Investigation Over A National Fire Danger Approach For Turkey With Geographic Information Systems

Yamak, Cagatay 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The aim of this study was to investigate Meteorological Fire Danger Indices for Turkey. A number of internationally implemented fire danger indices were calculated with Fire Danger Processing software and their performances were tested with Mandallaz and Ye&rsquo / s Performance Score Method. As a result, among other meteorological fire danger indices that have been applied by several fire fighting administrations and services, the U.S. National Fire Danger Rating System, Mc.Arthur&rsquo / s Fuel Moisture Model and Forest Fire Weather Index, BEHAVE Fine Fuel Moisture Model and Keetch Byram Drought Index, the Canadian Fire Weather Index was selected as the best performing fire danger index for Turkey. Calibrated with monthly fire history data of the last 5 years&rsquo / records, the results during the determined fire season were integrated with vegetation cover data for Turkey, derived from GLC 2000 global land cover data. Besides, daily performance of the Canadian Fire Weather Index was observed by three consecutive days in August 2006 and the outcomes were evaluated with the information about fire events compiled from newspaper archives. The study is a first attempt for further fire related analysis at the national scale / an attempt to establish an early warning system and a spatial base for mitigation effort for the wild fire phenomenon in Turkey.

Investigation Of Passive Sampling Of No2 And O3 In Ambient Air And Determination Of The Effects Of Meteorological Parameters To The Uptake Rate

Bayindir, Elif 01 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
In this study NO2 and O3 gases which are the secondary pollutants in ambient air were sampled with designed passive tubes. The collected samples were extracted for UV-VIS spectrometric analysis. NO2 gases were converted to NO2- ions by extracting with water and then this solution was colored with Saltzman reagent (5:1 sulfanilamide and N-(1 naphthly)-ethlyene-diamine dihydrochloride). Then the absorbance of the solution was measured at 537 nm. O3 was extracted with 3-metyl-2-benzothiazolinone hydrozone hydrochloride solution which gives yellow color after extraction. The absorbance of the solution was measured at 430 nm. Before starting the experiment, the exposure time was optimized. For this purpose, 15 days in winter and 65 days in summer samplings were conducted. For both NO2 and O3 it was decided that 7 days of sampling period was required as an optimum sampling time in order to reach maximum collection efficiency values for both pollutants. To determine the uptake rates of the passive tubes, NO2 was sampled in fifteen weeks and O3 was sampled in thirteen weeks. During each sampling period passive tubes were placed nearby the active air sampling stations of Refik Saydam Hygiene Center, Air Quality Control and Research Laboratory in Ulus and Ke&ccedil / i&ouml / ren. Then uptake rates of NO2 and O3 passive tubes were determined by comparing passive and active sampler data. The uptake rate was calculated for NO2 and O3 as 0.91 x 103 cm3 h-1 and 1.71 x 103, respectively. Since sampling was done in ambient air the effect of meteorological parameters should be determined. Each meteorological parameters, wind speed, wind direction, relative humidity, temperature, pressure and solar ration were correlated with uptake rates. It was found out that none of these parameters had a significant effect on NO2 passive tube uptake rate. However, O3 passive tubes were affected from temperature, solar radiation and relative humidity. Temperature and solar radiation showed positive correlation with uptake rate, on the contrary, relative humidity was inversely correlated with uptake rate. Finally the pollution map of Ankara was created by taking samples from forty points in the city.

Terrain Modeling And Atmospheric Turbulent Flowsolutions Based On Meteorological Weather Forecast Data

Leblebici, Engin 01 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, atmospheric and turbulent flow solutions are obtained using meteorological flowfield and topographical terrain data in high resolution. The terrain topology of interest, which may be obtained in various resolution levels, is accurately modeled using structured or unstructured grids depending on whether high-rise building models are present or not. Meteorological weather prediction software MM5, is used to provide accurate and unsteady boundary conditions for the solution domain. Unsteady turbulent flow solutions are carried out via FLUENT with the help of several User Defined Functions developed. Unsteady flow solutions over topographical terrain of METU campus are computed with 25m x 25m x 15m resolution using structured grids. These FLUENT solutions are compared with the MM5 solutions. Also, the accuracy of the boundary layer velocity profiles is assessed. Finally, effects of surface roughness model extracted from MM5 for the region of interest is investigated. In addition, unsteady flow solutions over METU campus are repeated in presence of high-rise building models using unstructured grids with resolution varying from 5 meters around buildings to 80 meters further away. The study shows that unsteady, turbulent flow solutions can be accurately obtained using low resolution atmospheric weather prediction models and high resolution Navier-Stokes solutions over topographical terrains.

Study of Application of Artifical Neural Network on the Trend of Ozone Concentration in the Urban Area, Kaohsiung

Hsu, Ciung-wen 15 July 2008 (has links)
PM10 and ozone are the dominant air pollutants in the Urban Kaohsiung. Ozone is a secondary pollutant generated in the troposphere from the precursors nitrogen dioxide and non-methane hydrocarbons. The trends of ozone concentrations first statistically are summarized utilizing the monitoring data during the period 1998¡Ð2007. All data are collected from four fixed-site air quality monitoring stations in Kaohsiung City. The results show that ozone concentration in Kaohsiung has one perennial peak concentration, occurring in October and March. The highest values occur in October and the secondary high value in March. The lowest values occur in the summer. The monitor data possess timeliness of data and the non-linear dynamic tendency. Artificial Neural Network ¡]ANN¡^, a system recognition, self-study function and ability of the solution to non-linearity dynamic system problem, was used as a tool to analyze these monitor data. This work utilizing neural networks develops a model to predict the trend of ozone situations in the Urban Kaohsiung. The network was trained using meteorological factor and air quality data when the ozone concentrations are the highest. The optimum set value of five parameters including date partition, hidden layer neurons, training function, leraning rate , and momentum coefficient were obtained based on trial and error methods. The simulated results of ozone concentration have a correlation coefficient within the range 0.865¡Ð0.899 and IOA within the range 0.927¡Ð0.934. The trend results of ozone concentration reflect strong relationships in all stations. The results of this study indicate that the artificial neural network (ANN) is a promising method for air pollution modeling.

Study of Tidal Phase and Amplitude Characteristic in Kaohsiung Harbor and Central Taiwan Strait

Wang, Wei-hua 10 February 2009 (has links)
In recent year, tidal gauge has progressed in temporal resolution or measurement accuracy, so that the quality of observational data tends to stable and reliable. However, setting up tidal gauge in the offshore areas restricts may apply due to many factors such as seabed topography, weather, sea state and leveling survey from land to gauge. Good tidal correction is one of key factors to the accuracy of bathymetric survey and to the area where tidal range is large. This study tried to use tide prediction data derived from the Yu(1993)¡¦s tide numerical model and verified with actual observed tide data, and further establishing a tidal zone of Taiwan Strait by tidal characteristic. Using Taichung and Mailiao tide stations as a reference tidal station, the direct tide station correction, tidal zone correction, nearest model grid correction, and virtual station correction methods were applied to evaluate the accuracy of tide calculating value by amplitude ratio and tidal phase difference. The tidal zone correction is not totally depending on the spatial distance from reference tidal station, and it is found that correction result of this approach is one of the best. However, further improvement in tide correction may need to explore due to different spatial resolution applied in different numerical models. In addition, the boundary condition of a harbor for tidal model is very complicated. This is why it is hard to make a numerical model for a harbor. In this study, two additional high accuracy radar tidal gauge were installed in Kaohsiung harbor and first-class leveling survey was performed in order to maintain tidal measurement accuracy, also to avoid the effect of errors propagation. According to the results from experiment, average tidal phase of second entrance of the Kaohsiung harbor is earlier than that of first entrance about 6 minutes, and average difference of tidal height is approximately 2-3cm. For this reason, we should pay attention to decide a proper reference tide station for tidal correction for dredging hydrographic surveying. And any possible tidal observation errors, such as meteorological tide. If two additional tidal gauges of this study are removed in the future, we still can predict tide height from fixed tidal gauge.

Μελέτη των περιβαλλοντικών συνθηκών έκλυσης του χημικού στοιχείου 222Rn και η πιθανή συσχέτιση της με την σεισμικότητα της περιοχής Μεγάρων

Οικονομόπουλος, Ευάγγελος 18 March 2009 (has links)
Over the last decades evidence for correlation between radon emission and earthquake activity suggests that monitoring of radon in soil gas can be used as a method to predict future earthquakes. However, although the method is promising for earthquake prediction and most of the seismic activity in Europe is released in Greece, no systematic experiments were conducted so far. In this study we present preliminary results of a two years experiment through the monitoring of eight sites in the Megara basin. In each site, soil radon exhalation was monitored in shallow boreholes (80 cm deep), using CR39 films, which were exposed every 15-day. The Megara basin was selected as a study area for the following reasons: (a) the basin is actively deformed and most of this deformation is accommodated by strong historic earthquakes. The most recent of these events are the 1981 Corinth earthquake sequence. (b) Within the basin large faults have spectacular outcrops, and or still preserve seismic ruptures. Thus the tectonic setting of the monitoring sites is well known in its tectonic position. (c) The entire experiment is set up quite close to Athens, thus earthquake epicenters are calculated fairly well and detailed meteorological data are also available. The experiment includes a series of monitoring sites distributed from Megara town to the coast of the Alkyonides bay, that it well known as the epicenter of the 1981 Corinth earthquakes. In essence the coastal area of the Gulf is rather the surface expression of the South Alkyonides Fault zone. Surface displacement along this fault during the 1981 event reached up to 1 m north side down. Based on these monitoring sites, we present the first results regarding the background soil radon concentration in the Megara basin as well as radon exhalation through a fault. Specifically, we present data of radon exhalation through a still preserved co-seismic rupture, 20 north of the rupture on the hanging wall block and 200 m south of the rupture within the footwall block of the South Alkyonides Fault zone.

Tarpvyriausybinė klimato kaitos komisija pažymi, kad nuo XX a. pradžios planetos oro temperatūra pakilo 0,7oC, Europoje – 1oC. Per XXI a. ji gali padidėti dar 1,5–5,5oC. Didžiausią neigiamą poveikį papr. pušiniam pjūkleliui daro aukšta ( + 27 - + 31 0C) oro temperatūra ir padidėjęs kritulių kiekis. Didžiausią poveikį pušinio pelėdgalvio sunykimui turėjo šalnos bei krituliai (liūtis, kruša). Didelę žalą pušinio verpiko populiacijos gausumui turėjo stichinė-ekstremali aktyvios augalų vegetacijos laikotarpio šalna. Verpiko vienuolio populiacijos gausumui turėjo įtakos 1982 m. vietinė stichinė sausra. O 1996 m. populiacijos mažėjimą galima sieti su dideliu miško gaisringumu, metų pradžioje užfiksuotu speigu (-33 0C), bei rudens šalnomis rugsėjo viduryje (-6 0C). / The IPCC notes that the twentieth century. the beginning of the planet's surface temperature has increased by 0,7 ° C in Europe - 1 º C.. In the twenty-first century. It may be increased by 1,5 to 5,5 °. The greatest negative impact on compressor. for half saw blade makes the high (+ 27 - + 31 0C) temperatures and increased rainfall. The greatest impact can withstand destruction had frost and precipitation (rain, hail). Significant damage to the pine lappet population abundance had extreme natural-active vegetation period of frost. In the population significantly reduced the use of sanitary protection.
