Previous issue date: 2012-11-23 / This study aimed at the functionally analysis of the verbal behavior of two people
diagnosed as schizophrenic, who were institutionalized patients. The participants, both
male, aged 51 and 57, presented a detailed report of hospitalization in several psychiatric
institutions. To evaluate the antecedent and the consequence of the inappropriate verbal
responses of the participants, we applied some methods such as (a) indirect functional
evaluation, (b) functional evaluation through direct observation and (c) experimental
functional evaluation, using two designs: (1) of multiple elements and (2) of reversionreplication
like AB1B2B3AB1B2B3 within follow-up. Associated with the design (1), four
main conditions were used: attention condition, demand condition, alone condition and
control condition. The attention condition was manipulated in three subconditions:
condition of minimum atention, condition of average attention and condition of maximum
attention. All the meetings lasted five minutes, were videotaped, and were individually
done with each participant over twenty-four sessions. The multiple elements design
sections were selected at random, applied, and later replicated in reverse. For the phases B2
and B3, an institution employee was trained in how to specifically interact with the
participants. The baseline of the design (2) is comprised of four sessions in phase A and
then another set of four sessions were also applied to each phase of the procedures B1, B2
and B3. For intervention phases B2 and B3, an institution professional in which participants
were hospitalized was trained. Upon completion of these phases A and the interventions
B1, B2 and B3 were repeated. Finally there were two sessions for the follow-up. Each of the
32 sessions with both participants lasted 15 minutes. Thus, participants were exposed to a
series of conditions in which antecedent and consequent events were manipulated and
their effects on the appropriate speeches (FA) and upon the inappropriate ones (FI and
RV) were observed. The results showed that the inappropriate speeches (FI and RV) were
controlled by multiple attention conditions: either to get attention (positive reinforcement)
and to escape demands (negative reinforcement). The results also demonstrated that the
proposed interventions favored the increase of FA, under the DRA effect, and in addition
the reduction of FI and RV as an extinction effect. The results also showed the relevance
of the procedures adopted such as the functional assessment interviews and the direct
observation of the target behaviors. Consequently, they also demonstrated the importance
of the training applied. The results that promoted the discussion of reinforcing the values
of social attention may have changed by an OM effect, denoting the relevance of studying
the antecedent and consequence events, on the inappropriate speeches of people diagnosed
as schizophrenic. Therefore, besides having advanced the research, the results corroborate
with the literature of the area and its implications.
follow-up.
treinamento aplicado.

Previous issue date: 2014-12-11 / The present study analyzed functionally inappropriate verbal responses of a person who
had been diagnosed with schizophrenia in a psychiatric service (CAPS) located in Cuiabá,
MT. The participant, male, single, 25 years old. To investigate the antecedent and
consequent events from inappropriate verbal responses, was used the functional assessment
process being interviewed staff CAPS and family; also direct observations of their
behavior. This information supported the functional analysis with the conditions: (1)
attention, (2) demand, (3) alone and (4) control. The condition (1) attention was divided
into: (1.1) attention-team, (1.2) attention-comment, (1.3) attention-doubt and (1.4)
attention-reprimand. The condition (2) demand was subdivided into (2.1) and activitydemand
(2.2) demand group. The results showed that under the conditions of attention and
demand was highest occurrences of inappropriate verbal than in other conditions: alone
and control. It is inferred from these findings that inappropriate verbal responses were
maintained by the sources of positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement. To
intervene, was used the design of type AB1B2A followed by follow-up, was applied to the
differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) procedure, allowing a reduction
of inappropriate words and increasing appropriate. Such studies enable the development of
more effective interventions aimed at increasing desired from people who have psychiatric
diagnosis of schizophrenia behaviors.
comportamentos. Essas informações subsidiaram a análise funcional com as condições: (1)
atenção, (2) demanda, (3) sozinho e (4) controle. A condição de (1) atenção foi
subdividida em: (1.1) atenção-equipe, (1.2) atenção-comentário, (1.3) atenção-dúvida e
(1.4) atenção-reprimenda.
sozinho e controle.
esquizofrenia.

Previous issue date: 2010-03-15 / This study aimed at functionally analyzing the verbal behavior of a person diagnosed with
schizophrenia undergoing treatment in a specialized service. The participant is a female,
diagnosed with simple schizophrenia, 27 years old, from the state of Bahia, single,
incomplete elementary school, low social-economic status, and presenting a history of
treatment in several institutions. To control the procedures, we used the design of multiple
conditions with three main conditions: condition attention (A), condition alone (S), and
condition control (C). Condition (A) was manipulated in four sub-conditions: (A1)
attention, eye contact (inappropriate speech was followed by 10 seconds of eye contact);
(A2) attention, physical contact (inappropriate speech was followed by 10 seconds of
physical contact); (A3) attention, comment (inappropriate speech was followed by the
comment It is difficult to understand when you talk like this ); and (A4) attention, task
execution (appropriate speech was followed by social attention in the form of signs of
approval); condition (S) was manipulated in two sub-conditions: (S1) alone, without
demand (participant remained in the room in the absence of the researcher) and (S2) alone,
with demand (participant remained in the room in the absence of the researcher, with
demand); and condition (C) (participant remained in the room composed by reinforcers, in
the presence of the researcher, who was writing on a sheet of paper). Under the conditions
studied, we also aimed at observing some emotional behaviors of the participant, such as
annoyance, anger, pleasure, elation, anxiety, sadness, and relief inferred from the
intonation of her voice and her behavioral topography. The results demonstrated that the
social attention manipulated under the different conditions controlled the participant s
inappropriate speech, which may have worked as a motivational operation for the
occurrence of her verbalization. They also demonstrated that under condition (A) there
were more manifestations of emotional phenomena, and rage (attention, eye contact, and
alone, without demands) was the most frequent emotion, followed by elation (attention,
comment), whereas the least frequent emotions were pleasure and relief (attention,
comment, and eye contact, respectively). These findings are discussed in terms of the
implications of the effects of a motivational operation as a component for the functional
analysis of the verbal behavior of the participant in the present investigation.
principais: condição atenção (A), condição sozinha (S) e condição controle (C). A
condição (A) incluiu quatro subcondições: (A1) atenção, contato olho a olho (a fala
