The employment of ex-military as teachers : the military, masculinity and moral regulation

Le Gassick, Peter James January 2016 (has links)
This doctoral research has analyzed the employment of ex-military as teachers from a perspective of identity and culture. Using a single case study approach, including focus groups, interviews and observations, the research has explored a military academy within 'College', a further education institute in the south of England. Focusing particularly on the experiences of four teachers who had recently left the British Armed Forces, the analysis employs Pierre Bourdieu's habitus, field and capital to understand the macro, micro and subject level influences that shape field practice. It is proposed that, at a macro level, moralizing discourse regarding undesirable working class youth has been positioned against an idealized masculine military power identity. This has overlaid existing discourse regarding the feminized nature of teaching and the marketization of education. This can be viewed as an ideological tension between a pervading centre-right perspective of education as a tool of social order and preparing the young for employment, dominating a broader liberal egalitarian ideal of education for comprehensive social reform. At a micro level, the construction of military identities was accomplished through capital exchanges regarding military experience and relational processes of differentiation with feminized 'others'. Student identity work used processes of imagination, constructing imagined social capitals through storytelling, symbolic interaction and ritualized performance. It is proposed that socialization with idealized military types, providing conceptualized forms of idealized vocational habitus, provided access to powerful imagined capitals on which students were able to draw in the construction of new identities. The research indicates that there are both positive and negative outcomes to this identity work. The data shows that the identity work through the differentiation of feminized ‘others’ can lead to behaviours that could be viewed as aggressive or abusive. The research also argues that this identity work can have a motivating effect on students who want to join the Armed Forces, leading to successful educational attainment where identity narratives supported academic practice. With respect to the ex-military teachers themselves, the research witnessed the most successful transitions being made by the youngest members; the oldest member struggled to change to the new field conditions, his cultured military habitus disposing him to military practice, resulting in him positioning himself professionally through the capitals of his past.

Descriptions of Self-Esteem Among Women in a General Educational Development (GED) Program

Bonnett, Mary A. 05 1900 (has links)
This research investigated changes in self-esteem and whether the origin and development of that self-esteem could be described in adult females participating in a GED program located at an Army Community Outreach Center. The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory was used to measure the self-esteem of 22 female family members of military personnel who did not adequately complete a high school program in the United States. Data were collected through interviews, daily journal writings, questionnaires, instructor's written observations, and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory.

Vliv alkoholu na kontraktilní vlastnosti kosterního svalstva / Influence of alcohol on the contractile properties of skeletal muscle

Vrba, Matěj January 2018 (has links)
Title: Influence of alcohol on the contractile properties of skeletal muscle Objectives: To identify the impact of alcohol to contractile attribute (Tc - contraction time and Dm - maximal displacement) m. rectus femoris. Method: The diploma thesis corresponds with empirically-theoretical based study. The research has a character of a quasiexperiment. The measured participants were consisted of students (n = 8) of Military Department (VO) and students (n = 3) of civilian (TVS) of attending full-time studies at the Faculty of Physical Education and Sport (FTVS) of Charles University (UK) in Prague. There were used the methods of descriptive statistics to describe it - rate position (arithmetic mean) and a measure of variability (standard deviation). Contractile attributes (Tc, Dm) were measured on the device TGM 100 at an electricity current intensity 80 mA. To analyse the normality of data was used Kolmogorov-Smirkov's test. For further calculations was used parametric method one-way ANOVA for repeated measurements were used statistical significance. For statistical processing was used computer program IBM SPSS Statistics 22 and the individual dose of alcohol relative to body weight was administered in three rounds at 20 minute intervals. Results: The average Tc was 33.23 ± 3.45 ms for the first...

Officersprogrammet, ett särintresse

Sturesson, Joakim January 2020 (has links)

An Evaluation of Military Education Assistance Programs From Participants Perspectives

Bolling-Harris, Ella 01 January 2015 (has links)
An Evaluation of Military Education Assistance Programs From ParticipantsF Perspectives by Ella Bolling-Harris MS, Capella University, 2008 MS, Capella University, 2004 BS, Park University, 2000 Doctoral Study Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Education Walden University August 2015 Military education programs exist to assist military members in completing their college education prior to exiting the military. At a southwestern United States Army Installation, members have expressed dissatisfaction with the education programs. The purpose of this case study was to examine the education programs from the participants' perspectives. Mezirow's transformative learning theory was used as the framework for the study. The research questions elicited program participants' perceptions of various aspects of the programs, the potential for conversion of a basic skills program to a 2-year degree program, and suggestions for leaders for implementation of programs. The sample of participants included 15 military members stationed at the Army Installation who were enrolled in college and exiting the military within 12-24 months, were serving on active duty at the Installation, had been on repeated deployments, were 18 years or older, and had been in the military 4 or more years. Data were collected through interviews and responses were coded and analyzed for common themes. Results from emergent themes were used to develop a project that included strategies for military leaders to assist military members in their degree completion. Recommendations included a timeline for leaders to implement strategies to assist military members desiring an education, converting the current Basic Skills Education Program to a 2-year general studies degree program, implementing adjustments for deployment, and creating an education buddy team for military members enrolled in college. Implications for social change include improving military education assistance programs to allow more military members to complete their education in order to assist them in entering the civilian workforce in their own communities or others after their military obligation has expired.

No. of bitstreams: 1 6809.pdf: 33733430 bytes, checksum: 99604d528fa7b753edf8de6f0564922e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-02-27 / This study falls into the history, philosophy and education sociology research line and its aim is to analyze the graduation of aviator officers at the Brazilian Air Force Academy. Our goal has been to reach an understanding of changes in the course curriculum, considering historical factors as well as the need for such changes. Our research starts in 1974, when the Air Force Academy was transferred to the country town of Pirassununga, up to the present time. Our bibliographical research suggests that the several curriculum modifications were not based on previous study and were not closely related to the doctrine and military strategy either. We have concluded that Brazil's political and economical situation, combined with a post-cold-war military identity crisis, turned military education into a bureaucratic activity and that has considerably compromised the profile of Brazil's war leaders. So we have analyzed the proposals for curriculum changes in the Aviator Officers Course in order to find how such changes were carried out and, most importantly, to find if they are compatible with the new standards of aviator's graduation and the new managerial tasks required. For that research our primary sources have been the Aeronautical Documentaion Center, the Air Force Academy archives and the legislation. We have also interviewed lieutenants who graduated in 2009 in order to hear their opininions on the adequacy of the new curriculum to the daily routine of an aviator.

Peer Support and Academic Resiliency for Recently Relocated High School Student

Kennebeck, Melanie Marie 01 January 2019 (has links)
Residential relocation requiring a change of school enrollment can negatively disrupt academic achievement, extracurricular participation, attendance, and ability to appropriately regulate emotions/behaviors. This disruption impacts military-affiliated students every 2 to 3 years. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively inform Student 2 Student’s (S2S’s) continued development and the Military Child Education Coalition’s (MCEC’s) pursuit of better serving newly relocated students. This will help the program to reach beyond good intentions and mitigate the perils of assuming that benefits occur without quantitative support. The three-factory model of Academic Resiliency was used as the theoretical framework guiding this study. Two American public high schools with similar demographics were requested to provide data for all new 9th through 12th graders, who enrolled in the school district for the first time during the 2018-19 academic year. A Mann-Whitney U was used to compare grade point averages (GPA), attendance percentages, number of extracurricular activities, and number of behavioral referrals for 179 students at a school with S2S to 97 students at a school without S2S. The 2 groups showed statistically significant differences across all 4 dependent variables. For example, the S2S group showed higher levels of extracurricular participation and fewer behavioral referrals than the control group. Additionally, a positive relationship between attendance and GPA was supported for the control group more than the S2S group. Overall, the results of this study quantitatively inform S2S’s continued development and the MCEC’s pursuit of better serving newly relocated students worldwide, which assists to create positive social change.
