Det är ju bara serier : En studie om journalistik i grafiska noveller / It´s just comics : A study of journalism in graphic novels

Lindahl, Christopher, Ankersen, Dag January 2010 (has links)

The purpose of this thesis was to study how journalism is represented in graphic novels, what roles are represented and if journalism in graphic novels is good or evil. The goal was also to see if there were any similarities or differences over a period of time. This was done with a qualitative analysis of two graphic novels written and drawn by Frank Miller. When we did the analysis we focused on pictures and texts that directly had a connection to the journalistic role. We used a semiotic approach to analyze the two graphic novels were our main focus where on what connotation, what denotation and what stereotypes could be found.

This study establishes that stereotypes are used to represent journalism in a negative way. Journalists are also the cause of more harm than good. When you put journalism into the narrative technique of good versus evil they are clearly evil and use their power to undermine the heroes of the story. The journalists are put into stereotypical roles such as the female news reporter who is all looks and no brain, or the overzealous male reporter who tries to tell the truth but no one will listen to him.

It is also clear that journalism is represented in a way that describes it as a phenomenon that spreads panic because the journalists in many cases come to their own conclusions without having all the facts. The study also shows that over a period of fifteen years the role of the journalist is the same but the way they are represented is very different. Because of the larger rivalry from other news sources the media is forced to find new ways to attract an audience. Therefore the newer graphic novel portrays a sexualisation of the journalistic role.

Tragic themes in the plays of Arthur Miller

Wortham, Christopher John January 1968 (has links)
Aeschylus wrote that we learn through suffering. Whether one agrees with this statement or not, one has to recognise that it has given rise to a great deal of discussion about tragedy. What kind of suffering we can associate with tragedy will be considered in the chapters which follow. The more immediate concern is the business of learning. Man can learn a good deal about the problems that confront him, but he cannot learn all there is to know about anything. His knowledge is relative. He may postulate the absolute, but it is beyond the grasp of the human mind to perceive the absolute in its absoluteness. The relativist can avoid an epistemological quagmire by simply accepting that a relativistic attitude is only of relative value; he has the intellectual humility to recognise that whatever he thinks or says is likely to reveal only part of the truth. Arthur Miller has suggested that the best serious literature is concerned with the absolute, in that he criticises one of his contemporary playwrights for writing a work which "fails to extend itself so as to open up ultimate causes". Can a common man such as Willy Loman be considered as a tragic hero? Does tragedy still exist in modern drama? Could the dark side of the “American dream” be the external flaw that provoces Loman’s fall? The objective of studying Arthur Miller’s play Death of a Salesman is focused on the possibility whether the protagonist, Willy Loman, can be considered a tragic hero. This study consists of a literary and historical perspective and is of a qualitative-descriptive character. The problem focuses on the question: what could be the influence, or rather, the illusion of the “American dream” that causes Willy’s tragic fall? This study is constructed by three cornerstones: first, the analysis of drama and tragedy from the perspective of Aristotle’s theory; second, the analysis of social drama and ultimately, the historical and literary perspective of the concept of the “American dream” as a reason for Willy Loman’s fall. The results of this study indicate that Death of a Salesman is not a period piece and that this play highlights issues from the past that are still current. It is noticed that Willy Loman meets his inglorious end because he is fooled and deluded by the “American dream”. The development of tragedy, culminating in modern social drama, indicates that a common man can be tragic, exactly because of the fact that Willy is an ordinary human being, which even more provoces feelings such as fear and pity, once what happened to him can happen to anyone of us. Existe ainda tragicidade no drama moderno?

There are several papers in the literature that focus on this topic, few directed in particular to the state of Paraiba, but none of them uses the methodology described herein. It is known that below the cloud base (850hPa) profiles of temperature and moisture are not affected by the BMJ parameterization scheme because it does not consider the downdrafts of cold air to lower levels. Given this assumption, the methodology implemented in this work is to compare temperature, moisture and wind series provided by ETA with the respective synoptic analyzes of convective ERA-INTERIM/ECMWF for two contrasting situations. The model was configured with a horizontal resolution of 12 km and 30 vertical levels, covering the northeastern Brazil and the adjacent Atlantic and the focus of analysis is for three cities in the state of Paraiba. The results revealed that the predicted temperature to Joao Pessoa was slightly underestimated for low levels, while for the other two cities the model significantly overestimated the temperature at 1000 mb and slightly underestimated in 900 and 800mb. The predictions of moisture and wind were considered satisfactory when compared with the Analysis, and the best results were found at low levels. There were no significant differences between the estimates in both contrasting situations.
