The Millerite Movement and American Millennial Culture, 1830-1845

Barnard, John Richard 01 August 2012 (has links)
Those who anticipate the end of the world are often met with ridicule. This is especially true with the Millerite movement of the 1830s and 1840s. David L. Rowe has referred to most historians' treatment of them as an episode of "comic relief in the otherwise complex and tragic play of events from Jacksonian Democracy to the Civil War." A number of scholars, starting in the 1980s, established that Millerites were not the lunatic fringe as they were once characterized, mainly by demonstrating that Millerites were not the only group in the antebellum United States harboring apocalyptic expectations, rescuing the Millerites from the fringe of the Second Great Awakening. Though critical to our understanding of Millerism, most of these studies have been inexorably confined to western New York, where the movement originated and gained the most support, virtually ignoring Millerites in other parts of the country. More importantly, these studies have failed to break down the entrenched dichotomy between the "optimistic" millennialists, represented by Finneyite evangelicals, and "pessimistic" millenarians, represented most clearly by the Millerites. By examining various aspects of the Millerite movement through its well-established press, this these shows that Millerism, more than a coherent social movement or ecclesiastical institution, was a meeting ground for various currents of millennial thought that were pervasive in the first fifty years of the American republic.

Two-Stage Operational Amplifier Design by Using Direct and Indirect Feedback Compensations

Zhang, Jiayuan 21 June 2021 (has links)
This paper states the stability requirements of the amplifier system, and then presents, and summarizes, the classic two stage CMOS Op-Amp design by employing several popular frequency compensation techniques including traditional Miller compensation, nulling resistor, voltage buffer, and current buffer. The advantages and disadvantages of all these compensation strategies are evaluated based on a standard performance which has a 70dB DC gain, a 60◦ phase margin, a 25MHz gain bandwidth, and a slew rate of 20 V/us requirements. All the designs and simulation results are based on a 180mm 1.8 V standard TSMC CMOS technology. Ultimately, the traditional Miller compensated Op-Amp (a single compensation capacitor amplifier) cannot meet all the requirements but all other techniques could with also a boost of performance in various aspects. / Master of Science / Two-stage CMOS operational amplifier has two input pins and one output pin. it is used to amplify the differential inputs signal and transfer it to the output side. Usually the input signals are too weak to be processed by the rest of the system units. So the Op-Amp can amplify the weak input signals which then can either be further modified for some specific applications by the rest units of the system or be the final output of this entire system. The role of the Op-Amp in analog and digital systems is as the role of transformers in the power system. So the output signal is required to have fast and stable responses to the inputs. This paper states some standard requirements of the Op-Amp in aspects of gain, stability, and operating frequency. Due to the classic design of two-stage Op-Amp has poor performance of stability and operating frequency, some compensation techniques are applied as the feedback networks to improve its performance. These techniques include traditional Miller compensation, nulling resistor, voltage buffer, and current buffer. The advantages and disadvantages of all these compensation strategies are evaluated based on a 180mm 1.8 V standard TSMC CMOS technology.

A Toulmin Analysis of Miller v. California

DeLoach, Mark B. (Mark Benson) 08 1900 (has links)
This study deals with the Supreme Court decision in the case of Miller v. California, 413 U.S. 15 (1973). The study analyzes the arguments presented in the decision by both the majority and the dissenting justices according to the Toulmin model. This study begins with a review of viewpoints on the First Amendment, and how they will be applied to the question addressed in the thesis. The history of the obscenity controversy is detailed to explain the viewpoints that the Supreme Court has taken dealing with this problem. This study concluded that the arguments presented by the majority were not supported by ample evidence. The arguments presented by Justice Douglas in the dissent were more justified. This study concludes that more study needs to be conducted in the area of obscenity; and that the material should not be suppressed.

Developmental genetic analysis of post-axial longitudinal limb reduction defect (PALLRD) in Miller syndrome and nonclassical Miller syndrome

Aldridge, Kishan Victoria January 2018 (has links)
This project aimed to provide a greater understanding of limb development through the characterisation of Mendelian disorders. The more specific aim was to identify the developmental basis of the Post Axial Longitudinal Limb Reduction Deformity (PALLRD) seen in the autosomal recessive Miller syndrome caused by mutations in Dihydroorotate Dehydrogenase (DHODH)[1]. In addition whole exome sequence analysis was used to identify further causative variants in a group of individuals with Non Classical Miller syndrome. These individuals were negative for mutations in DHODH although they had a clinically overlapping PALLRD. A single novel variant was discovered in Fibroblast Growth Factor Receptor 1 gene (FGF1) in one individual in this cohort. Due to the known vital role of FGF signaling in limb bud development the functional significance of this variant was investigated further[2]. In vitro data suggested that this variant has a dominant negative effect. Finally I compared the differential gene expression profile of embryonic mouse forelimb and hindlimb at a later stage of development. Digital Gene Expression Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (DGE-SAGE) produced gene-expression profiles of the forelimbs and hind limbs from 14.5 days post conception (d.p.c) murine embryos. This data included known differentially expressed genes as well as novel candidate genes that are putative regulators of limb growth. Whole mount In Situ Hybrisation (WISH) and Quantitative Real Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRTPCR) provided corroborating evidence for the differential expression of a subset of these genes between the forelimbs and hind limbs. This project suggests a role for DHODH in limb bud cell proliferation. It also demonstrates a novel potentially dominant negative mutation within FGFR1 in an individual with a limb deformity. Finally a subset of genes involved in regulating the differential growth between the forelimb and hindlimb were presented.

Bostadsrättsföreningar, en potentiell skattkammare : Ett Modigliani-Miller exempel på svenska bostadsrättsmarknaden

Persson, Eddie, Rosendahl, Tim January 2012 (has links)

Measurements of the Inner Piston Motion and Cylinder Pressure of a Differential Stroke Internal Combustion Engine

Chen, Ting-hao 14 August 2009 (has links)
The thermal efficiency of a differential stroke engine based on the Atkinson cycle is higher than that of engines with an Otto cycle or Diesel cycle. To fulfill the requirement of the expansion ratio that is greater than the compression ratio in the Atkinson cycle, a mechanism with an inner piston that can provide such a motion control in a differential stroke engine is needed. In order to measure both of the inner piston motion and the cylinder pressure of a differential stroke engine, this thesis is focused on building up a measurement system to inspect the design of a mechanism that achieves the motion needed in a differential stroke engine. To obtain the inner piston motion in a differential stroke engine operated at a speed, the measurement system is equipped with a laser sensor and an angular encoder to identify the difference between the theoretical and experimental results. Also, to inspect the cylinder pressure, a pressure transducer is employed with the test bed so that both of the P-T diagram and P-V diagram can be calculated by using the measured result. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed test bed, real experiments are performed. The developed measurement system has proved to be a useful tool during the developing processes of design and manufacture of differential stroke engines.
