Text in Afrikaans / Every person yearns to function as an independent and integrated human being who experiences inner peace and wholeness. The search for a way of life that leads to wisdom and life knowledge has continued through the centuries and according to Hancock (2005:8) it began as early as 40 000 years ago. This research study takes up this search, describing human wholeness from a spiritual, philosophical and psychological perspective, in the context of specific essential characteristics. Together with this, applicable therapeutic approaches were researched to structure an intervention model to achieve wholeness. Wholeness therapy is an eclectic approach based on medical hypnoanalysis with added aspects of the rational-emotive behavioural therapy of Albert Ellis, choice theory of William Glasser and Victor Frankl’s logotherapy. By means of qualitative research a case study from a psychological practice was described, in which a person was enabled to experience wholeness through wholeness therapy which is described in full. / Educational Studies / D.Ed. Em 1893 o yoga chega às Américas com a vinda do Swami Vivekananda aos Estados Unidos e no Brasil, nos anos de 1940, Caio Miranda começa a ensinar a prática no Rio de Janeiro. Portanto, o yoga é praticado há sessenta anos no país e há, ainda, poucas pesquisas sobre o mesmo no campo da saúde coletiva, razão esta que justificou o nosso interesse. Além do que em 2002 a Organização Mundial de Saúde incluiu o yoga no conjunto das práticas mente-corpo e estimulou seus países membros a pesquisar e adotar esta prática nos seus sistemas de saúde pública. O objetivo desse trabalho é analisar as percepções dos líderes das principais tradições do yoga em São Paulo sobre a possibilidade da inserção dessa prática como política pública no Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS) e seus processos de formação e profissionalização. Foram identificadas 21 tradições principais, das quais 18 líderes foram entrevistados e três não o foram por diferentes razões. Foram realizadas entrevistas em profundidade em janeiro/fevereiro de 2006; em setembro/outubro de 2008 e abril de 2009, com roteiro construído em três secções: a) Identificação pessoal; b) A prática do yoga e c) Yoga e saúde. As entrevistas tiveram duração média de 1,5h e aconteceram em diferentes locais da cidade de São Paulo, de acordo com os apontamentos dos entrevistados. Todas foram gravadas, transcritas e analisadas com base na tradição da análise temática da pesquisa qualitativa. A maioria dos instrutores tem curso superior, formação em yoga adquirida no Brasil e em países estrangeiros, em cursos nos EUA e na Índia, viagens e retiros. Em relação à profissionalização, alguns dos entrevistados tiveram contato muito cedo com o yoga, seja através de leituras, influências familiares, inclinações místicas, estados de saúde delicados ou simples curiosidade. Outros entraram em contato com a prática na idade adulta e decidiram se dedicar à docência do yoga. Os entrevistados atuam em escolas particulares de yoga ou em organizações que promovem diferentes tradições do yoga, dando aulas, palestras, cursos de formação, cursos intensivos e de férias, bem como organizando retiros, viagens, seminários, e alguns escrevem artigos e traduzem livros sobre temas do universo do yoga. Todos os entrevistados aprovam a inclusão do yoga no SUS e elaboraram sugestões sobre: como a prática poderia ser ofertada, o público alvo, as técnicas de yoga a serem ensinadas, a duração das aulas, etc. Algumas áreas em que o yoga poderia fazer importantes contribuições seriam: vegetarianismo; correção postural e integração dos movimentos; cultura de paz; cultivo de valores; abstenção de vícios; consciência espiritual; integração do si; cultivo da atenção, oxigenação cerebral; cultivo de uma disciplina e melhoria da qualidade de vida. Conclui-se que o yoga é visto como um conjunto de práticas físicas, sociais e filosóficas úteis para o campo da saúde, todavia com muitos desafios para a sua integração no SUS, devido à sua identificação com a cultura alternativa e distanciamento das bases epistemológicas da medicina complementar e integrativa. / Abstract: Background: Yoga is a psycho-physical practice systematized by Patanjali, a Hindu sage, who lived in the second century BCE. In 1983, yoga was brought to America by Swami Vivekananda. In Brazil, around 1940, Caio Miranda began teaching the practice in Rio de Janeiro. Thus yoga has been practiced for the last sixty years in the biggest urban centers of the country and there are very few academic studies on the subject in the health field, which is the main reason to justify our interest in the study. Besides, in 2002, the World Health Organization included yoga in the group of the mind-body practices and stimulated its members to study and adopt these practices in the national health systems. Objective: This article explores the São Paulo yoga leaders' perceptions regarding the potential insertion of yoga as a public policy into the Brazilian National Health System, and their process of professionalization. Methods: Twenty one main traditions were identified, of which 18 leaders were interviewed, and the other three didn't participate for different reasons. Indepth interviews were carried out in January/February 2006; September/October 2008 and April 2009, through the application of a questionnaire divided into three sections: (a) personal identification; (b) yoga practice; and (c) yoga and health. The interviews lasted approximately 1.5 hr and took place in various locations in São Paulo city, according to appointments arranged by the interviewees and after they had signed a voluntary consent form. All the interviews were tape-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed according to the qualitative research tradition. Most yoga leaders have college education and acquired their yoga training in Brazil and in foreign countries, like USA and India, and through trips and retreats. Concerning their professionalization, some of the interviewees came in contact with yoga at a young age either through books, family influences, mystical inclinations, delicate states of health or simply curiosity. Others discovered yoga as adults and decided to become yoga teachers. They work in private yoga schools or for organizations which promote different yoga traditions, teaching, giving lectures, courses for teachers, intensive and vacation courses, and they also organize retreats, trips and seminars; some of them write articles and translate books on different themes pertaining to the yoga field. Results: All the interviewees approve the inclusion of yoga in the Brazilian National Health System and suggested how the practice could be applied, the main public, the yoga techniques, the duration of the classes, etc. Areas in which yoga was perceived as being able to make important contributions included: vegetarianism; postural correction and integration of movements; peace culture; the cultivation of virtuous values; abstention from addictive substances; spiritual consciousness; integration of the self; cultivation of awareness; brain oxygenization; cultivation of discipline and improved quality of life. Conclusion: Yoga is seen as a group of useful physical, social, and philosophical practices for the health field. Heinrich Boll's early prose : a discourse of war-damaged bodies

Using insights drawn from research in a variety of disciplines into theories of the body, this dissertation investigates Heinrich Boll's (1917-1985) early prose (1936-1955) as a discourse of war damaged bodies. The "new" texts discussed appeared in Germany between 1982 and 1995. The thesis represents the first attempt to analyse Boll's work from the perspective of the human body. Chapter I briefly outlines the influence sociology has had for a better understanding of the role of the human body in society. This chapter demonstrates that the body can be fruitfully used both as a critical tool and as an interpretative device in discussing literary texts. An elucidation of the methodology and theoretical approach used concludes the chapter. The thesis explores Boll's use of the body not only as aspects of the narrative and also for its ethical implication. According to him, an author's temporality ("Zeitlichkeit") is the first thing to be communicated before embarking on an analysis or interpretation of his work. Chapter II investigates the "Aryan/Nazi" body and refers to other contemporary body discourses. Chapter III, investigating the "Writer's" body, provides insights into Boll's biography. Both chapters shed considerable light on Germany's cultural, social, internal, and external political situation. Chapter IV describes the soldier's 'closed,' "disciplined" body as portrayed in texts such as Das Vermachtnis. Colonel Bressen, a key character in Wo warst du, Adam?, epitomises the "mirroring" body in Chapter V. More "Schein" than "Sein," it reflects an intentionally internalised and acquired "habitus." In Chapter VI, Boll's war story "Der blasse Hund," provides a striking example of a "dominating" body which seeks to preserve its power and to control its fears through committing violent acts against its helpless victims. In contrast, however, a "communicative" body such as Kate Bogner's in Und sagte kein einziges Wort, examined in Chapter VII, is 'open' and caring. Throughout his early prose, Boll's careful use of body language reveals the multi-layered nature of reality. The process of shaping self through regular physical exercise among women : a grounded theory

The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychological and social processes of regular physical exercise use by women who consider themselves "exercisers." In using grounded theory method, the primary objective of this study was to generate a substantive theory that described (a) the experiences of women who self-identified as exercisers and engaged in regular physical exercise, (b) the contextual factors that influenced their participation, and (c) explained the experience of participating in regular exercise, considering both the positive and negative effects of exercising, and the process of change through its use. Twenty-two women (age range, 21 to 60 years) were interviewed about their exercise experience. Twenty participants self-identified as exercisers. Two other participants, a former exerciser, and a nonexerciser, were interviewed in order to explore theory limits. A middle-range theory of "shaping self through exercise" was identified as the basic process of these women's experience of regular physical exercise. The process involved the reciprocal connection between two intrapersonal phases: "shaping up" and "experiencing self as shaped." Through interactions among the subprocesses of shaping up ("talking to self," "experiencing exercise," "diverting from self" and "feeling good about self") exercisers in this study experienced self as shaped through "growing into self," "grounding self in exercise," and "expressing self through exercise." Influenced by personal meaning and contextual conditions (one's personal exercise background, current life context, and socialcultural environment), exercisers frequently re-experienced both phases. Aspects of each conceptual element of the theoretical model are identified and illustrated by narrative data. This grounded theory provides insight into the complexity of women's physical exercise experience. To appreciate this experience it is necessary to view the social-psychological process from an interactionist perspective. Findings suggest that women's exercise may be more than physical movement in reaction to environmental and personal influences, but may also be an intrinsically motivated endeavour towards self-growth, self-care, and selfexpression. Awareness of the complexity of this process, including personal and contextual influences, may provide guidance towards more successful adoption and maintenance of exercise. The master's thesis discusses basic elements of metaphysics by René Descartes. The first part of the thesis focuses on his personal life because certain events shaped and influenced his further actions and ideas. To understand the context of time, the paper presents history knowledge that is relevant to the topic. René Descartes is still known today for his philosophical ideas which helped to develop findings in the field of metaphysics. During his lifetime, that is the first half of the 17th century, natural sciences were gaining in popularity. The thesis follows up with mathematization and geometrization of nature. Descartes' basic premise of knowledge is methodical skepticism which ultimately results in his first personal certainty of philosophy. Next part focuses on the clarification of the dualistic concept of two different substances - rez extensa and res cogitans. The largest and most important part deals with the mechanical conception of the human body. René Descartes believes that the human body is a machine operated by mechanical principles. The thesis introduces a systematic description of the body which logically justifies the primary ideas of this French philosopher.
