Design and Evaluation of a Mobile Phone-based Remote Patient Monitoring System for Heart Failure Management: A Focus on Self-care

Methods to improve self-care and clinical management of heart failure are required, especially in light of the anticipated increase in heart failure prevalence and associated high costs. Remote patient monitoring (RPM) has been shown to improve heart failure outcomes, but the feasibility and efficacy of mobile phone-based RPM systems are still unknown. The main objectives of this research were to investigate the optimal design of a mobile phone-based RPM system, and to determine the effects of the system on self-care, clinical management, and health outcomes. A mobile phone-based RPM system was first developed using a user-centric design process. It was then evaluated with a six-month randomized controlled trial consisting of 100 patients attending a heart function clinic. The quality of life improved only for the intervention group, but both intervention and control groups improved with respect to self-care, heart function, and heart failure prognosis. The clinic was determined to be a confounder. Patients who were enrolled into the clinic for less than six months showed significantly greater improvements (six months is required for patients to stabilize from medication optimization). Therefore, a subgroup analysis using data from the 63 patients who were enrolled into the clinic for over six months at time of recruitment was performed. The results from the subgroup analysis indicated that the RPM system improved self-care, heart function, and heart failure prognosis at statistically significant and clinically meaningful levels. These improvements were found to be a result of enhanced self-care knowledge and practices, as well as enhanced clinical management enabled by the system. No differences in mortality or hospital admissions were found between groups, but the trial was underpowered to detect changes in these outcome measures. In summary, mobile phone-based RPM was found to be a feasible and effective tool to help improve heart failure management and outcomes.

Near-Field Characterization of FM Transmitter Devices in Mobile Phone Applications

Mobile Phone, without this we can’t think to pass a day in presence. We have found a rapid increase of mobile phone users from a few years ago till now. Day by day the modern technologies allow the mobile phone to become smaller, cheaper, and more reliable. This also creates new possibilities for applications and integrations of the classical broadcast systems and modern mobile phone technologies. One example is the FM transmitter in mobile phone. The FM transmitter in a mobile phone is a “cool” feature which allows listening to the music content in phone on a car or home radio.   This thesis work deals with the near field characterization of FM transmitters in mobile phone applications. The RF scientists and engineers neglect the near field zone because typical RF links operate at distances of many wavelengths away where near field effects are totally insignificant. But in this work we are interested in the near field properties of the FM transmitter. We measured the field intensity at near field and estimated the field strength at the far field region at 3 meters. To measure the field intensity and the effective radiated power we used HR1 near field scanner. As this is a new measurement approach, we made the validation of this system by measuring a reference dipole antenna at 880MHz and then compare the measured results to the CST simulation results. A basic phone model of FM transmitter has been created by CST simulation and a prototype has been made which was also used as our DUT. After validation of the near field measurement system we measured our DUTs (3 models-one cable fed prototype and two active devices) with the near field system and estimate the effective radiated power and field intensity at 3 meter. Furthermore, we measured our DUTs at 3 meter with a far field measurement system with optical fiber connection. A feasible relation between field strength and measured power was defined in order to correlate the near field scanner results with the far field measurement system.   This paper also provides a short design guide line for built in FM antennas by relating the antenna size and placement to input power and the field strength in mobile phone FM transmitter application

Half-Wavelength Loop Antenna for Mobile Phones

In this thesis we introduce a half-wavelength loop antenna for operation as an internal antenna for mobile phones. First, we introduce a single loop antenna for single-band operation (eg., UMTS band), and experimental and simulated results are presented. Next, we introduce a dual-band loop structure which covers the operating bandwidths of the GSM/DCS dual-band mobile phone. The proposed dual-loop antenna is studied, especially for the effects between the two loops of the antenna. Both of the single-loop and dual-loop antennas have the characteristics of generating similar surface currents on the ground plane with that of the conventional monopole and planar inverted-F mobile phone antennas.

Telecom market was opened due to the demand of Taiwan¡¦s joint WTO and Mobile operator became a ¡§new star¡¨ business then. The first private-owned telecom operator launched service in 1997, then, mobile phone penetration rate grew up rapidly from 6% of 1997 to more than 100% of 2003. Taiwan¡¦s mobile phone penetration rate has ranked No.1 in the world; meanwhile, mobile operators in Taiwan also faced the challenge of the coming new telecom era-mobile value added service. Mobile value added service was introduced to Taiwan market 5 years ago and it became the theme of competition within these two years. Most of the papers were focused on the entire telecom competing strategy, very few of them were involved the study of value added service. The study, therefore, tries to adopt case study to analyze the difference of key players in the market and hope to provide recommendation to those players in mobile telecom market. Following are the major discoveries: A. The marketing strategy and key elements of value added service of those key players are too similar to cause the competitive advantage B. Players are eager to win in launch timing and therefore, lack of solid marketing survey and study. C. Players need to enhance the conception and operation for service marketing because most of the marketing operation were still based on traditional 4P D. When there is no difference in either products or strategy, successful and complete execution will lead to the final succeed.

The growth rate in the field of Computer, which is one of the traditional 3C industries, has been getting slower in recent years, then Communication replaces it and serves as the main driving force to keep the 3C industry growing. The author chooses mobile phone as the main subject of the thesis to analyze since mobile phone is the product which has the largest market share and the greatest potential for growth in the field of Communication. Under current trend development of mobile phone, the thesis aims to analyze and investigate 1)the product architecture of mobile phone; 2) what kind of change it has on the business architecture of mobile phone chip manufacturer; 3) what kind of impact it brings on chip manufacturer which works in concert, i.e. Foundry Fab. The research begins with the analysis of the application terminal of market. The author classifies the mobile phone into two categories, namely, low-end and high-end, and organized the collected information/data about the current market demand of mobile phone, changes of internal mobile phone devices, and requirements on Foundry OEM services. Also, data/info about the strategic activities of leading mobile phone IC chip corporations are collected and organized; the collected data will be presented and analyzed. Finally, the analysis will be the base, which the conclusion will be drawn upon. The study discovers that the original product architecture of mobile phone displays an ¡§integral-closed¡¨ structure; however, under current trend development of mobile phone, the low-end mobile phone had changed into a ¡§modular-closed¡¨ structure, even increasing the ¡§open¡¨ degree. The product architecture of high-end mobile phone is characterized by ¡§integral¡¨ and ¡§modular¡¨ since the specifications of internal devices of high-end mobile phone are more complicated and still not established yet. Moreover, the high-end mobile phone is in the stage of development, together with the addition of new functions, which in turn resulted in a perplexing and uncertain business environment. Therefore, companies often form strategic alliances in order to reduce the risks of developing new products in an unstable business environment. The competition pattern has changed from ¡§firm against firm¡¨ to ¡§alliance against alliance¡¨. Hence, we can tell the impacts resulted from the change of product architecture on business architecture. Finally, the answers of some questions are still cannot be found not due to the limitation of the study. Therefore, a list of unsolved questions is given in the end of the study so as to form an initial lead in the development of a ground for further research.

Design and Implementation of Broadband Internal Planar Monopole Antennas for Mobile Handsets

An internal small antenna usually suffers from degradation in performance of impedance bandwidth and radiation patterns. In this thesis, we design and fabricate a broadband interior type planar monopole with an omni-directional radiation pattern over a wide operation band using a slant feeding strip. It has a measured impedance bandwidth about 465MHz with center frequency at 1.66GHz (1427 ¡V 1892MHz) and the maximum cross polarization level about -13dB at 1800MHz, which is GSM1800 band in mobile communications. A modified design is an interior planar monopole with a slant slit. It has a measured impedance bandwidth about 455MHz with center frequency at 1.71GHz (1487 ¡V 1942MHz), including GSM1800 and PCS1900 band, and the maximum cross polarization level about -15dB at 1800MHz. The antennas have the dimensions of 40mm*15mm which occupies a small size on the system board and they are suitable to be mounted within the mobile handset device.

The Research of the pricing of the Mobile Telecommunication

In recent years, mobile phone service has become the most popular term of telecommunication service. However, in back of the complex pricing plans and promotion plans, there are some interesting tropics. For example, how does a mobile phone service operator price the on-net and off-net charges? What is the factor that makes the off-net charges more expensively than the on-net one? And which principle is adopted to design the multiple pricing plans by the operators? In this study, we will make some amendment for the Hotelling Model, and set a new model which be called the Psychological Differential Model, that can expectably explain the eventuality which a man has a lot of phone number from different operators simultaneously. Besides, it will add a factor which will derogate the network externalities of the utility of mobile phone service. Mathematically, we use the way of ¡§Two-stage Market Pricing¡¨ to develop the equilibrium of on-net and off-net charges. By the cost pricing method, we can find the access fee will cause off-net charges more expensively than on-net one in the chapter three of this paper. Finally, in the chapter four, this study will introduce the principle of the third price discrimination to explain the outcome of multiple pricing plans.

Abstract This study explores the feasibility of applying mobile phone¡¦s value-added services in attracting adolenscents¡¦ participation in local festival. In recent years, Taiwan¡¦s local governments have been considering how to effectively enhance cultural identities and promote cultural tourism through conducting various kinds of festivals. Against this backdrop, the introduction of using mobile phone for festival marketing is seriously considered. Although adolescents are the group most in need of cultivation of local culture, previous marketing effort proved to be fruitless. Traditional festivals continue attracting visitors from the so-called cultural tourists ¡V those already with cultural knowledge of the tourist site (known as tourist gaze). Usually it was in the ccasion of family tour that adolescents would participate in festivals. Therefore, it has been an issue regarding how to attract adolescents in attending festivals. While adolescents are characterised by the nature of social grouping, plus high flexibility of adopting new technologies, the auther is most interested in how to use mobile phones as a effective means for attracting them to festival places. By conducting a survey of 738 valid samples, generally aged 14-16, from Kaohsiung¡¦s public high schools, the author uses factor analysis to sort out perceiveably the most favorable marketing tools. Short message service (SMS) stands out as the first choice. They also favour value-added services that adds with local culture taste. Particularly they would welcome value-added services that can incorporate role models, favourite products, and group activities into festival marketing. Using adolescents¡¦ familiar jargons will touch their heart as well. This study would contribute to the understanding of Kaohsiung¡¦s adolescents in adopting and using information and communications technologies (ICTs) in general, and whether they would accept mobile marketing for promoting festivals in particular. Hopefully by using this findings as an clue or a guide, local governments and telecommunications operators can design a better-planned and effective festival marketing arrangement which can further help constructs adolescents¡¦ local cultural identity. The analysis of competitive advantage among the four telecommunication services

In light of the niche theory, the study aims to understand the competition among the four telecommunication services, including fixed network telecom, second generation telecom service, third generation telecom service and internet phone in the taiwan market. In this study, we put emphasis on the gratification of the telecom user, because the more gratification the telecom get, the more competition it have. The findings suggest that there are eight factors about the gratification of the telecom consumer, including functional, affection, information-seeking, fashion, uitility, entertainment and pricing structure. In addition , there is strong competition between the fixed network telecom, second generation telecom service, third generation telecom service and internet phone. Four telecom services are good at different factors, therefore, new telecom services would not form competitive displacement for fixed network telecom. Thus, we argue that four telecom services satisfy different consumers needs, and they will survive in different segmentations of telecom market service.
