Target language use in Modern Language classrooms : perception and change among newly qualified teachers in Scotland

Lynch, Michael Patrick January 2015 (has links)
In this thesis I investigate the practices and perceptions of some Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) of modern foreign languages (MFL) in Scotland in relation to how they use the target language (L2). I seek to answer the questions “In what different ways do student teachers of modern languages use the target language in Scottish secondary school classrooms?’, ‘What reasons do they give for how they use it?” and “In what way(s), if any, do newly qualified teachers of modern languages change teaching pedagogy in their initial stages of teaching in relation to the use of the target language and what reasons do they give for any changes they make?”. The issue arises because of the continuing gap between what initial teacher education (ITE) advocates in respect of L2 use and what qualified teachers say they do, in so far as there is evidence in this area. There is little empirical evidence relating to how and why MFL NQTs develop the practices and perceptions of qualified teachers. Data was gathered through an online questionnaire issued to all modern languages teachers in Scotland and semi-structured interviews were conducted with a small group of PGDE (Secondary) Modern Languages students at the end of their PGDE year and at the end of their first year of teaching as NQTs. Audio-recordings of the NQTs were also made during this first year of teaching. Data from the four sources were analysed using an inductive approach, remaining flexible in terms of extending, modifying and discarding categories. The findings revealed that the NQTs used considerably less target language during their NQT year and had changed their views on the target language substantially since their PGDE year. They reported that they found it difficult to use L2 for discipline, grammar teaching, explaining things and for social chat. At the same time there were huge changes in their practice and big changes in their views vis-à-vis L2 use. Significantly, the data revealed that these changes in practice and views happened very quickly, were a lot starker and occurred a lot faster than previously thought. This situation seems to have many causes – influences from experienced colleagues, survival tactics, how teachers develop their own pedagogy and identity as teachers. This thesis recommends that those involved in ITE and Career Long Professional Learning look particularly at the two areas of situated learning and teacher cognition in relation to the use of the target language. It further recommends collaborative research between teachers in schools and other agencies, such as Education Scotland and local authority quality improvement officers, together with teacher educators to develop an understanding of how to promote effective learning and teaching strategies in relation to the use of the target language in class.

I privat och offentligt : Undervisningen i moderna språk i Stockholm 1800–1880

Bernhardsson, Peter January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to characterise the shifting relationship between public and private education in nineteenth-century Sweden. It does so by a study of modern language teaching in Stockholm 1800–1880. Whereas modern languages had long been taught by private language masters, German, French and English were only officially recognised as subjects of public grammar schools in 1807. The study shows that, unlike the impression given by earlier studies, the introduction of public teaching of modern languages did not bring an end to private language instruction. The study further demonstrates that although private language teaching continued to thrive alongside the expanding public language education, the relationship between the two types of education changed over time. Until the 1840s, both private and public education operated as competitors in a local educational market, adjusting their language teaching to local demand and mutual competition. A crucial condition for this competition was the fact that state curriculums still had a relatively limited impact on the actual teaching of public schools. In the later part of the century, the language teaching within public schools became more influenced by the idea of formal education, leading to an increased focus on grammar. Simultaneously, the role of private language instruction evolved into complementing public teaching, primarily by providing the practical proficiency neglected in public schools. While the study questions the importance and effects of central reforms, especially in the earlier decades of the 19th century, it points to other significant factors that influenced the local education market. In particular, the gradual centralisation and systematisation of public schools diminished their ability to cater for local demand. But the growing importance of formal credentials meant that public schools had less need to compete for students. Students were no longer necessarily attracted by the practical usefulness of schooling, creating both the possibility of the specific form of language teaching that developed within public schools, as well as the need of supplementary private instruction.

On the teaching of foreign languages, this problem intensifies, by reason of the actual need of the existence of spaces, set as facilitators to practice a new language. With the purpose of finding solutions to the lack of an environment that promotes the teaching and learning of a foreign language, which in this case is the English language, bibliographic in nature qualitative research and case study. This research was based on the case study in EE "Antônio Marinho de Carvalho Filho", located within the State of São Paulo, in the city of Hyderabad. For that there is only a one-sided view of the researcher, the qualitative research was based on relationships between users and the existing spaces, through both observation of lessons and the school building spaces. In addition to the observations, questionnaires were used and unstructured interviews geared toward students and teachers involved in the process of teaching and learning the English language. Important to remember that the study was based on experience in the classroom of elementary school Cycle II, 6th to 9th grade. To address this issue, it was necessary to also assess the physical environment, their occupation and the perception of the users, through an experiential approach and behavioral observation. To this end, the instruments were used: Walkthrough, Behavioral Map, Wish, Visual Selection, Poem and a technical inspection which featured survey and architectural documentation. The bibliographical research in the fields of pedagogy and Kowaltowski studies included Architecture, Frago, Rheingantz and other theorists who worry about the use of school space as curriculum and in which are some clear answers about the spatial influence in the educational process. The collected data intensified the need for readjustment in the space school studied in relation to the process-oriented environments for teaching and learning, in particular in the English language. Finally, use alternatives were pointed and occupation of spaces studied with recommendations for improvement of the environments with the aim of promoting the teaching of Modern Foreign languages.
