In dialogue with English modernism : Storm Jameson's early formation as a writer, 1919-1931

Gerrard, Deborah January 2010 (has links)
After a period during which Storm Jameson’s restricted literary identity has been that of the politically engaged woman writer, critical interest in the intellectual and stylistic complexities of her work is now reviving. Yet Jameson’s background in early English modernism and the manner in which it enriches her writing continues to pass unnoticed. This thesis uncovers new evidence of Jameson’s immersion in the early English modernisms of Alfred Orage’s Leeds Arts Club and New Age journal and of Dora Marsden’s journals, the New Freewoman and the Egoist, as an avant-garde student before the Great War. Drawing analogies with the post-colonial notions of ‘Manichean delirium’ and of ‘writing back to the centre’, this thesis argues that, subsequently – as a provincial socialist woman writer struggling to make her way at the predominantly male and elitist cultural centre – Jameson developed a vexed outsider-insider relation to English modernism which she expressed during the 1920s in a series of intertextual novels critiquing the contemporary cultural scene. It examines each of these novels chronologically, beginning with Jameson’s critique of the early modernisms of Orage, Marsden and associated writers in her first two novels, before moving on to her engagement, in turn, with the work of D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf and Wyndham Lewis. Employing a socially oriented model of intertextuality, this thesis reads each novel synchronically as a sceptical and often witty probing of some of the polarised, and frequently contradictory, positions taken within the modernist debate. It also interprets the 1920s fiction diachronically as a developmental journey towards what Jennifer Birkett terms the ‘stylised realism’ of the 1930s and 40s, in which William James’s Pragmatism plays a central role, allowing Jameson to assimilate those intellectual and stylistic elements within English modernism that she values before leaving the rest behind.

Narrating Sentiment in Mason & Dixon: A Modernist Novel of Feeling

Upton, Creon January 2007 (has links)
This thesis approaches Thomas Pynchon's novel, Mason & Dixon, in terms of its narrative structure and sentimental content. Pynchon is generally regarded as a challenging and innovative writer, so narrative is an unsurprising subject for a study of his most recent work; sentimentalism, on the other hand, is a far cry from traditional approaches to his writing. Despite this, however, as I outline in my introduction, sentimentalism has long hovered around the edges of Pynchon's work. In Mason & Dixon it takes a privileged role as the dominating mood of the novel's final section, "Last Transit." This sentimentalism, far from being the retrogressive move that the term might imply, is bound up in a radically reconceived approach to the narrating voice of novelistic discourse, whence comes the unifying feature of my study. In Mason & Dixon, I identify this unity in the novel's referencing of film, long-established as one of Pynchon's major cultural influences. In my first chapter, I outline my approach to sentimentalism and narrative-in the modern and, specifically, modernist novel, as well as in contemporary film. In chapter two I outline my conception of Mason & Dixon's narrator as emulating film's visual representations; in chapter three, I explore this narrator as a "radically underdetermined" identity, who represents, not a linguistically embodied subjectivity, but rather representation as its own agent, as representation itself. In my fourth and final chapter, I examine how this narrator manages the sentimental content of the novel, concentrating on the character of Mason.

Indiana Disciples of Christ and the modernist-fundamentalist controversy, 1919-1930

Siebenaler, David P. January 2004 (has links)
Like many mainline Protestant denominations, the Disciples of Christ in Indiana experienced discord and schism during the 1920s as a result of the modernistfundamentalist controversies. Although many historians accentuate the role of doctrinal disputes, recent scholarship suggests the importance of social and cultural factors. This study shows that the strife between modernist and fundamentalist Disciples in Indiana encapsulates a larger cultural rift in American society that had been growing since the latter part of the nineteenth century. Using the rhetoric of "cooperation," modernist Disciple leaders of the statewide Disciples of Christ organization tried to implement a more centralized church structure that would enable them to pursue a progressive agenda. Fundamentalist Disciple ministers and laypersons regarded such efforts as an infringement on their local autonomy, and their widespread involvement in the 1920s Ku Klux Klan was symptomatic of their anxiety over modernizing forces within their churches and throughout American culture. / Department of History

This research intends to study the presence of the popular culture in Manuel Bandeira’s poetry, through the analysis of the manner in which the rhythms of the texts created by the popular imaginary are incorporated into the modernist author’s works. Thus, we start by the selection of poems that explicitly evoked the popular literature of oral tradition to, in sequence, analyze the formal aspects that constitute the rhythmic level of the poems. In so doing, we seek to establish a connection between the rhythmic and the semantic aspects, in order to study, not only the structure, but also the role it plays in the poem. For this purpose, we use as theoretical basis the lessons about rhythm and poem analysis present in O estudo analítico do poema (2006), by Antonio Candido and the teachings about phonology expressed by Roman Jakobson in Seis lições sobre o som e o sentido (1977), among others. About Manuel Bandeira’s works, we will consult critical works such as Humildade, paixão e morte (2009) by Davi Arrigucci Jr. and Manuel Bandeira: verso e reverso (1987), a book organized by Telê Porto Ancona Lopes. The popular aspect of Bandeira’s poetry is approached through several studies and registers of Brazilian’s popular culture and music by Mário de Andrade, works such as Literatura oral no Brasil (1984), by Luís da Camara Cascudo. We selected six poems distributed among four of the author’s books, among which we find different kinds of popular compositions, like children’s songs, lullabies, prayers, among others. Thereby, we hope to comprehend the role played by popular culture in Manuel Bandeira’s works

'Liberties and licences' : gender, stream of consciousness and the philosophy of Henri Bergson and William James in selected female modernist fiction 1914-1929

Saeed, Alan Ali January 2015 (has links)
This thesis reconsiders in detail the connections between a selection of innovative female modernist writers who experimented variously with stream-of-consciousness techniques, May Sinclair, Dorothy Richardson, Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf. It describes in this context the impact of the philosophy and thoughts of both William James and Henri Bergson upon these women writers’ literary work. It also argues for a fundamental revision of existing understandings of this interconnection by considering the feminist context of such work and recognising that the work of these four female writers in effect incorporates a ‘gendered’ reading of James and Bergson (encountered both directly and indirectly through the cultural and intellectual zeitgeist). In establishing a feminist perspective as key elements of their aesthetic the thesis explores the vital influence of existing tradition of female autobiography upon their reception and usage of both James and Bergson. The latter’s impact on such women writers were so distinctive and powerful as the work of these philosophers seemed to speak directly to contemporary feminist concerns and in that context to represent a way of thinking about society and culture. This echoes and has parallels with existing attempts at revisions of patriarchal society and creating new spaces for female independence. In the above context the thesis reviews existing research on the impact of James and Bergson on these four writers and offers new insights into how each of them made use of these two seminal thinkers by analysing the relationship between theories, selected literary and philosophical texts. Stream-of-consciousness ought to be seen as a distinctive, specific tradition connected with feminist concerns and as a way of writing the inner and hidden self, rather than just a narrow formal feature of literary texts; it offers women a continuing, creative exploration of its possibilities as fictional practice. The female modernists included in this account represent the celebrated: Virginia Woolf and Katherine Mansfield, together with writers largely and unjustly forgotten in subsequent periods: Dorothy Richardson and May Sinclair. However, the thesis demonstrates that such female modernist writers gained much from being part of a range of informal networks, being almost within a tradition in which they learnt, borrowed and reacted to each other; an interconnection that requires new critical recognition.

A contribuição das casas modernas para o ensino de projeto de arquitetura: uma interpretação do estudante na sua formação / The contribution of modern houses for the education project architecture: interpretation of a student in their training

Elvis José Vieira 19 December 2006 (has links)
The present dissertation aims to study and analyze the modern house projects which have contributed to new living architecture and urban concepts, and the acknowledgement of these intentions and purposes is used as guideline for the development of didactical orientations. Different projectual concepts that belong to the Twentieth Century architecture history are also compared in order to set up an internationally constructed scenario which will include brazilian didactical teaching experiences (FAUUSP and FAUUBC) as well as historical european examples such as the BAUHAUS experience in Germany. The faculty teaching carreer of the author shall help the construction of the concept he names as shared didactical experience.

Edison Hitoshi Hiroyama 07 May 2010 (has links)
The research adopts the theme of Housing Collective vertical, to examine aspects of the architecture of buildings and urban spaces set up for them. Will be studied for projecting the operations defined by the architects, the construction solutions adopted, and the representativeness of the building, within a context of cultural production similar. Under the urban issues, will present the processes and agents that contributed to the consolidation of selected urban areas. From there take a reading of the relationship established between these two elements, highlighting the various possible dialogues, which results in areas eligible for the city. In both objects of study we will record and present their current status, and thus confirm the initiatives proposed in their original designs, as well as the changes occurred.
