Novel Antenna Designs for Mobile HandsetsFang, Chi-Yin 13 June 2003 (has links)
Two novel antenna designs for mobile handsets are proposed in this thesis. With a helix loading, an inverted-L monopole antenna capable of generating two resonances at about 900 and 1850 MHz is first presented. The operating bandwidths obtained cover the required bandwidths of the GSM/DCS/PCS bands. Besides, an internal mobile handset antenna comprising a PIFA and a PILA, which are, respectively, designed for covering the GSM and DCS/PCS bands is also presented. The PIFA and PILA together occupy a compact volume of 7.2 ¡Ñ 20 ¡Ñ 40 mm3, and are suitable to be built-in within the housing of a mobile handset.

Multiband Chip Antennas for Mobile HandsetsHsu, Ming-Ren 03 June 2008 (has links)
In this thesis, the study mainly focuses on developing multiband chip antennas for mobile handsets. Three possible solutions and their extended and integrated designs are presented. By using the dielectric material as the chip base, the chip antenna can be smaller in size and simpler in design. Most of the applications of the traditional chip antennas are rarely used as the mobile phone antenna and are commonly designed with a single operating band to cover GPS or WLAN operation only. Different types of the antennas are proposed in the thesis. The metal patterns of the monopole and loop antennas are manufactured inside the chip base with an occupied volume of generally less than 0.8 cc, some even as small as 0.3 cc. Electronic components like the lens of the embedded camera and the speaker can be integrated close to the chip antenna with little influences on the radiation characteristics. Consequently, the developed chip antennas are suitable for mobile communications and can cover not only GSM850/900/1800/1900/ UMTS bands but also WLAN/WiMAX bands.

Internal Uniplanar Antennas for Laptop ComputerLiao, Shih-jia 18 June 2009 (has links)
In this thesis, three small-size internal multiband antennas for laptop computer application for different wireless communication systems are proposed. In the first design, the coupling feed is incorporated to the planar inverted-F antenna to achieve a dual-resonance excitation in the lower band such that the obtained bandwidths can easily cover GSM850/900/DCS/PCS/UMTS operation. The effect of the user¡¦s hand on the antenna is also studied. In the second design, we introduce the T-shaped coupling feed used in the PIFA for successful excitation of two wide operating bands to cover WLAN operation in the 2.4 GHz band and 5.2/5.8 GHz band, and the size reduction is even larger than 50%. Finally, a multiband monopole antenna with a band-notching slit is proposed. By embedding the slit of length about a quarter-wavelength at about 4 GHz, a band-notching characteristic is obtained, which leads to an additional resonance at about 3.5 GHz. Hence, three wide operating bands for covering all the desired operating bands of WLAN/WiMAX systems are achieved for the proposed antenna.

Internal Printed WWAN Antennas for Laptop ComputerLee, Li-chun 19 June 2009 (has links)
Two novel internal WWAN antennas having multi-band operation capability and suitable to be embedded in the laptop computers are proposed. The first antenna is a penta-band printed monopole slot antenna, which can cover GSM850/900/1800/1900/UMTS operation. The second antenna is a penta-band printed dual-loop antenna. The antenna can cover GSM850/900/1800/1900/UMTS operation and occupies a small size. The effects of the environment and the user¡¦s hand on the internal laptop computer antenna are also studied. Take the first antenna as an example; the obtained results show that the effects of the internal environment of the laptop computer are mostly on the antenna¡¦s impedance matching, which however can be improved by adjusting the parameters of the antenna. On the other hand, since the user¡¦s hands are lossy materials, a decrease in the antenna¡¦s radiation efficiency is observed when the user¡¦s hand is in the vicinity of the internal antenna.

The hearing abilities of elasmobranch fishesCasper, Brandon M 01 June 2006 (has links)
The hearing abilities of elasmobranch fishes were examined in response to several types of stimuli using auditory evoked potentials (AEP). Audiograms were acquired for the nurse shark, Ginglymostoma cirratum, the yellow stingray, Urobatis jamaicensis, in a controlled environment using a monopole underwater speaker. A dipole stimulus was used to measure the hearing thresholds of the horn shark, Heterodontus francisi, and the white-spotted bamboo shark, Chiloscyllium plagiosum. The dipole experiments yielded much lower thresholds than any other experiment, suggesting that this type of sound specifically stimulated the macula neglecta by creating a strong velocity flow above the head of the shark. A shaker table was created to measure the directional hearing thresholds of the C. plagiosum and the brown-banded bamboo shark, C. punctatum. This experiment showed that these sharks could sense accelerations equally in all directions suggesting that they have omnidirectional ears. The results also yielded higher thresholds than with the dipole, suggesting that the macula neglecta was not stimulated as the sharks were being accelerated. An audiogram was also acquired for the Atlantic sharpnose shark, Rhizoprionodon terraenovae, using a monopole speaker in the field. This experiment revealed that the hearing thresholds did not appear to be masked by ambient noise levels, and resulting thresholds yielded the lowest levels detected by any elasmobranch using AEPs. Taken together, these experiments show that sharks are most sensitive to low frequency sounds in the near field and use both their otoconial endorgans as well as the macula neglecta to sense particle motion.

Comparative Study of Different Excitation Techniques for Microstrip-like Structures over an Infinite Perfect Electric Conductor PlaneJamaly, Nima January 2006 (has links)
The overall goal of the thesis is to establish detailed comparisons among different well-known models of excitations in their application on Microstrip-like Monopoles. Comparisons are made over the input impedances predicted by these excitations. In this way, the Galerkin’s version of the Method of Moment is applied and rooftops functions are chosen as our basis/weighting functions. Different excitation models have their influence over the excitation vector and a unique MoM matrix is used to give input impedances. We shall elicit the effects of several parameters over relative input self/mutual impedances derived from these excitation models and finally make conclusions about their differences in anticipating the input Resistance, input Reactance and also resonance frequencies.

A wideband monopole antenna designLourens, Jako 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The successful operation of a man-pack VHF jamming system requires a compact and efficient antenna operating over a wide bandwidth. The design of such an antenna is the focus of this thesis.
The antenna should be of a practical size for a portable system and it must radiate energy efficiently across a frequency bandwidth in excess of a decade. A practical „target‟ specification of such an antenna has been drawn up based on the performance of a commercially available system.
Several possible antenna topologies, each with a variety of loading section options, are tested using “Full wave” electromagnetic modelling (FEKO). Each topology/loading-section is numerically optimised for load element values by considering both its gain and reflection coefficient. Results of the „optimally loaded‟ solution for each topology are then compared to each other to arrive at the best overall design.
The best result is found to be the traditional monopole whip-type antenna, with four R-L loading sections spread along its length. The simulated results show that the proposed antenna can be expected to meet the target standing wave ratio (SWR) specifications while offering a gain advantage of between 5 and 10 dBi higher than is available commercially. The selected design is constructed and its performance measured.

It begins by introducing a gradual recap on the major types of defects, and how their approaches change as the Lagrangian assumes greater symmetry groups. Next, remains attention only to models that support monopoles. Firstly , it's studied the global monopole SO(3), presenting through an analytical approach, its main features such as asymptotic space with angular deficit and null gravitational interaction. Posteriorly, it's shown that monopole solutions can arise also in field theory with Lorentz symmetry violation. / Neste trabalho, apresenta-se uma abordagem bibliografica sobre defeitos topolOgicos corn destaque para os monopolos corn ausencia de campos de gauge. An investigation of near fields for HF shipboard antennas: surface PATCH and wire grid modeling using the Numerical Electromagnetics CodeElliniadis, Panagiotis 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / The Numerical Electromagnetics Code (NEC) was used to evaluate the admittance, average power gain, and the electric near and far field of a monopole antenna mounted on a cubical box over a perfectly conducting ground plane. Two models of the box, employing surface patches and wire grids, were evaluated. The monopole was positioned at the center, the edge, and at a corner of the box's top surface. Admittance and average power gain of the antenna were calculated. NEC results were examined and compared with experimental data and with results from "PATCH", another independent electromagnetic modeling code. The near electric field was calculated for both models. Computer graphics techniques were presented for plotting NEC near field results using DISSPLA (Display Integrated Software System and Plotting Language), a commercial graphics package. Contour and 3-D amplitude, and phase plots of the near electric fields were presented. Radiation patterns were calculated to relate far field and near field behavior of the antenna. Surface patch and wire grid models are compared and conclusions were presented. / Naval Ocean Systems Center / http://archive.org/details/investigationofn00elli / O&MN, Direct Funding / Lieutenant, Hellenic Navy
