Investigating Morning Commute Route Choice Behavior Using Global Positioning Systems and Multi-day Travel Data

Li, Hainan 30 November 2004 (has links)
One of the major impediments to developing a larger body of knowledge in travel behavior than we currently have is the lack of sufficient data at very detailed levels. The lack of sufficient data is the result of the inherent complexity of gathering and subsequently analyzing observations of the phenomena of interest. This is particularly true for route choice, a topic on which scant link-by-link data appear to be available, especially at multi-day level. In fact, very little empirical work is based on real world observation. This dissertation studies the factors that influence morning commuters route choice and route switching based on objective real-world observations of travel behavior during multi-day period. This dissertation tests the current route choice model assumption that travel time or travel distance is the only factor influencing drivers route choice decision. Investigation of the objective route choice factors confirms that minimizing travel time, although very important, is not the only factor that impacts route choice. Several other factors have been identified that impact commuters route choice. This dissertation examines the choice between using single or multiple morning commute routes. The results indicate the strong explanatory power of work schedule flexibility and trip-chaining on the choice of single or multiple commute routes compared to the commuters socio-demographic characteristics and commute route related attributes. This dissertation also presents an extensive effort in analyzing GPS-based travel behavior data and develops a methodology to subtract route choice information and trip-level travel information from the GPS-based vehicle activity data.

Agee and Shame: A Psychoanalytical Reading of the Autobiographical Fiction

Collins, James January 2002 (has links)
This thesis explores the autobiographical fiction of James Agee from the perspective ofKohut's self psychology and shame studies. Chapter One provides an outline of these psychological theories and draws connections between Kohut's narcissistic personality disorder and shame, makes reference to other scholars such as Joseph Adamson, J. Brooks Bouson and Barbara Ann Schapiro who have employed these theories with such effectiveness to other authors, and discusses Agee within these contexts. Chapter Two focuses on A Death in the Family and examines how Agee's autobiographical persona suffers from a narcissistic injury and excessive shame that precedes his father's death, and explores how other family members suffer from similar disturbances. Chapter Three examines Agee's first novel, The Morning Watch, and - discusses the shame dynamics that underlie Agee's ambiguous presentation ofreligion. Chapter Four explores Agee's short autobiographical fiction from the 1940's and discusses how Agee' s response to the modem world plays an integral role in his examination of the self and interpersonal conflicts. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Representations of Women in The Dallas Morning News During the Feminist Movement

Lambiase, Jacqueline 08 1900 (has links)
Content analysis of The Dallas Morning News focuses on sources, bylines, photographs, and main characters to determine the quantity and quality of portrayals of women. The study included front pages and main local news pages during one week each from 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, and 1990. Change was charted by year for both sexes. In 1950, few representations of women were included and many were stereotypical. Some stereotyping persisted in 1990, and men outnumbered women more than 3 to 1 as story sources, nearly 3 to 1 in front-page bylines, more than 2 to 1 in photographs, and more than 2 to 1 as main characters. Women still lag behind men, despite feminists' efforts to improve coverage.

Original Short Stories

Horany, Sarah B. (Sarah Beth) 12 1900 (has links)
This thesis consists of three original short stories: "August Morning," "Weekend Idyll," and "Free Ride." In addition, an appendix has been added which contains "Hamilton House Roundabout," the original version of "Weekend Idyll." It is included to illustrate the dramatic changes that can occur in the writing process. "August Morning" focuses on a young man's struggle to gain his freedom from his family, particularly his overbearing father. Whether or not he succeeds is ultimately up to the reader. "Weekend Idyll" follows a young woman as she tries to live a dream she has long believed in. Ultimately, her vision is shattered. The final story, "Free Ride," centers on a hapless teenager who finds happiness only in the exhiliaration of racing. Ultimately, it kills him. I wrote stories rather than an analysis primarily for practical reasons. As a teacher I found an exercise in writing more readily transferrable to my classroom.

The role of children's everyday cultures in schooled literacy practices

Campbell, Corinna Lynn 12 January 2015 (has links)
This self-study examines the role that children’s out-of school lives play in the “schooled literacy practices” of the Morning Meeting, a daily meeting in the teacher-researcher’s classroom. Morning Meeting in this Grade 2/3 classroom became a contestable “third space” where several professional tensions intersected for the teacher-researcher. The study explores questions of what “counts as literacy,” what role “popular culture” plays in school, and whose voices are privileged or marginalized in schooled literacy discussions. Data was collected over a 3-week period in the form of immediate and more distanced teacher reflections. A Bourdieusian theoretical framework, critical sociocultural literacy theory, third space theory, and artifactual critical literacy, offered the teacher-researcher lenses through which to analyze the meanings found in the everyday stories and artifacts young children share in the schooled literacy practice of Morning Meeting. The findings of this study inform and create new thinking about the entanglements of children’s out-of-school everyday culture with schooled literacy practices.

This study aimed to evaluate the lixiviation of sulfentrazone and amicarbazone applied to the field, with and without mineral oil, and its relationship with the control of morning glory (Ipomoea nil and I. hederifolia), from seed deposited at different depths and under different layers of sugar cane straw. In sugar cane field, after accumulated rainfall of 35, 67 and 106 mm, PVC pipes of 10 cm in diameter, sliced lengthwise, were buried by the depth of 35 cm. The tubes were removed and, after the last sampling (106 mm), the tests plants sorghum and Ipomoea nil were sown across the section of pipe. Visual assessments of intoxication were made at 7, 10 and 15 days after sowing (DAS) and 20 DAS the dry weight of the seedlings was determined. The experimental design was a randomized block in split plots scheme with four replications. The plot consisted of application of two herbicides (amicarbazone and sulfentrazone), with or without mineral oil, and a control without herbicide. In subplots was studied the depths of leaching (0,0-2,5; 2,5-5,0; 5,0-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-25; 25-30; 30 - 35 cm). For the bioassay, the presence of sulfentrazone was estimated in the upper layer to the 10 cm deep, even with 106 mm of rainfall and whether adding the oil.
