The French philosopher Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1998) develops an aesthetic based on the concept of sublime from his writings on art from the decades of 1980 and 1990. Such formulations belong to his philosophical period characterized as Kantian turn, based on the reading of Kant's critical philosophy, but with nuances of Burke's influence. The present work aims to investigate the descriptive concepts of Lyotard’s aesthetic of the sublime, as well as the way they are used in the commentary of music issues, especially those of the musical avant-gardes of the twentieth century. It is intended to problematize the role of music in the constitution of Lyotard's aesthetics, as well as the scope and appropriateness of the composers listed by the philosopher as examples of authors committed to the values of the sublime. The main hypothesis is the assertion that Lyotard's sublime finds a privileged and singular fit in the work of the American composer Morton Feldman (1926-1987), due to the search for the divestiture of the spirit-subject-consciousness present both in the work of the philosopher and in the essayist and musical work of the composer. As a consequence, it is concluded that a musical critique that wants to address the present issues of the sublime demands an essayist writing that echoes a philosophy of the event, evoking the opening of language determination toward a manner (and not a method) of reflexive type of investigation, in terms of Lyotard's reading of the Kant’s Critique of the Faculty of Judgment.

Vem vill bedriva klimatsmart dikt? : Om ekokritik och miljöetik i Gunnar D Hanssons Tapeshavet / Who wants to conduct climate-smart poetry? : On ecocriticism and environmental ethics in Gunnar D Hansson’s Tapeshavet

Westblom, Simone January 2022 (has links)
This essay analyses the poems ”(Österöd)”, ”(Återbesök – 26 augusti)” and ”(Koelbjergkvinden)” from Gunnar D Hansson’s collection of poems Tapeshavet. The poems are examined in relation to Timothy Morton’s ecocriticism, and from a meta-poetic and ethical perspective. What the poems emphasize is the problematic aspect of trying to convey an anti-anthropocentric world, as the human subject is always implicated in the meta-poetic grip which Hansson uses. Subsequently, the poems also carry an ethical aspect because they engage in questions about both how one ought and can write about the environment.

Cubature on Wiener Space for the Heath--Jarrow--Morton framework

Mwangota, Lutufyo January 2019 (has links)
This thesis established the cubature method developed by Gyurkó & Lyons (2010) and Lyons & Victor (2004) for the Heath–Jarrow–Morton (HJM) model. The HJM model was first proposed by Heath, Jarrow, and Morton (1992) to model the evolution of interest rates through the dynamics of the forward rate curve. These dynamics are described by an infinite-dimensional stochastic equation with the whole forward rate curve as a state variable. To construct the cubature method, we first discretize the infinite dimensional HJM equation and thereafter apply stochastic Taylor expansion to obtain cubature formulae. We further used their results to construct cubature formulae to degree 3, 5, 7 and 9 in 1-dimensional space. We give, a considerable step by step calculation regarding construction of cubature formulae on Wiener space.

Banding and Marking Methods in Studying Seasonal movements of the Sharp-Tailed Grouse in Morton County, North Dakota

Klett, Albert T. 01 May 1957 (has links)
The Great Plains variety of the sharp-tailed grouse Pediocetes phasianellus jamesi Lincoln was the predominant upland game bird during the exploratory and early settlement period in North Dakota (Coues 1874 and 1878 . Larson 1928, and Williams 1926) . Since then its status has diminished as the prairie grassland gradually was converted to intensively used pastures and cropland. Although the sharptail is still abundant enough in its remaining habitat to provide for liberal annual harvests , further demand on these lands by a growing human population will make it necessary to apply game management measures other than hunting regulations if the sharptail is to be retained as an important game bird in the state.

The Derivation and Application of a Theoretically and Economically Consistent Version of the Nelson and Siegel Class of Yield Curve Models

Krippner, Leo January 2007 (has links)
A popular class of yield curve models is based on the Nelson and Siegel (1987) (hereafter NS) approach of fitting yield curve data with simple functions of maturity. However, NS models are not theoretically consistent and they also lack an economic foundation, which limits their wider application in finance and economics. This thesis derives an intertemporally-consistent and arbitrage-free version of the NS model, and provides an explicit macroeconomic foundation for that augmented NS (ANS) model. To illustrate the general applicability of the ANS model, it is then applied to four distinct topics spanning finance and economics, each of which are active areas of research in their own right: i.e (1) forecasting the yield curve; (2) investigating relationships between the yield curve and the macroeconomy; (3) fixed interest portfolio management; and (4) investigating the uncovered interest parity hypothesis (UIPH). In each application, the ANS model allows the formal derivation of a parsimonious theoretical framework that captures the essence of the topic under investigation and is readily applicable in practice. Respectively: (1) the intertemporal consistency embedded in the ANS model results in a vector-autoregressive equation that projects the future yield curve from the current yield curve, and forecasts from that model outperform the random-walk benchmark; (2) the economic foundation for the ANS model leads to a single-equation relationship between the current shape of the yield curve and the magnitude and timing of future output growth, and empirical estimations confirm that the theoretical relationship holds in practice; (3) the ANS model provides a theoretically-consistent framework for quantifying risk and returns in fixed interest portfolios, and portfolios optimised ex-ante using that framework outperform a passive benchmark; and (4) the ANS model allows interest rates to be decomposed into a component related to economic fundamentals in the underlying economy, and a component related to cyclical influences. Empirical tests based on the fundamental interest rate components do not reject the UIPH, while the UIPH is rejected based on the cyclical interest rate components. This provides empirical support for suggestions in the theoretical literature that interest rate and exchange rate dynamics associated with cyclical interlinkages between the economy and financial markets under rational expectations may contribute materially to the UIPH puzzle.

A Nonlinear Transient Approach for Morton Synchronous Rotordynamic Instability and Catcher Bearing Life Predictions

Lee, Jung Gu 2012 May 1900 (has links)
This dissertation deals with three research topics; i) the catcher bearings life prediction method, ii) the Morton effect, and iii) the two dimensional modified Reynolds equation. Firstly, catcher bearings (CB) are an essential component for rotating machine with active magnetic bearings (AMBs) suspensions. The CB's role is to protect the magnetic bearing and other close clearance component in the event of an AMB failure. The contact load, the Hertzian stress, and the sub/surface shear stress between rotor, races, and balls are calculated, using a nonlinear ball bearing model with thermal growth, during the rotor drop event. Fatigue life of the CB in terms of the number of drop occurrences prior to failure is calculated by applying the Rainflow Counting Algorithm to the sub/surface shear stress-time history. Numerical simulations including high fidelity bearing models and a Timoshenko beam finite element rotor model show that CB life is dramatically reduced when high-speed backward whirl occurs. Secondly, the theoretical models and simulation results about the synchronous thermal instability phenomenon known as Morton Effect is presented in this dissertation. A transient analysis of the rotor supported by tilting pad journal bearing is performed to obtain asymmetric temperature distribution of the journal by solving variable viscosity Reynolds equation, energy equation, heat conduction equation, and equations of motion for rotor. The tilting pad bearing is fully nonlinear model. In addition, thermal mode approach and staggered integration scheme are utilized in order to reduce computation time. The simulation results indicate that the temperature of the journal varies sinusoidally along the circumferential direction and linearly across the diameter, and the vibration envelope increased and decreased, which considers as a limit cycle that is stable oscillation of the envelope of the amplitude of synchronous vibration. Thirdly, the Reynolds equation plays an important role to predict pressure distribution in the fluid film for the fluid film bearing analysis. One of the assumptions on the Reynolds equation is that the viscosity is independent of pressure. This assumption is still valid for most fluid film bearing applications, in which the maximum pressure is less than 1 GPa. In elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) which the lubricant is subjected to extremely high pressure, however, the pressure independent viscosity assumption should be reconsidered. With considering pressure-dependent viscosity, the 2D modified Reynolds equation is derived in this study. The solutions of 2D modified Reynolds equation is compared with that of the classical Reynolds equation for the plain journal bearing and ball bearing cases. The pressure distribution obtained from modified equation is slightly higher pressures than the classical Reynolds equations. / PDF file replaced 10-21-2012 at the request of the Thesis Office.

A brief history of the writing (and re-writing) of Canadian national history

Hamel, Jennifer Leigh 17 August 2009
Canadian historians periodically reassess the state of their craft, including their role as conveyors of the past to the Canadian public. With each review since the late 1960s, some Canadian historians have attempted to distance the profession from the work of those scholars labelled national historians. Three of the most prominent of these national historians were Arthur Lower, Donald Creighton, and W.L. Morton, whose work was once popular among both professional historians and the general population. Drawing primarily upon reviews of their monographs, this thesis tracks the changing status of national history within English-Canadian historiography since 1945 by examining how Canadian historians have received the work and assessed the careers of Arthur Lower, Donald Creighton, and W.L. Morton.<p> National history can be broadly defined as the history of a specific nation, more typically, a nation-state. While the specific characteristics of national history have, like other types of history, changed over time, Canadian national history in the decades following the end of the Second World War used strong scholarship and clear, readable prose to communicate a specific vision of Canada to the general public. While Lower, Creighton, and Morton applied differing interpretations to their historical research, they all employed these components of national history within their work. After the Canadian Centennial, a new cohort of baby boomer historians brought a different set of values to their understanding of history, and the interpretations so widely acclaimed during the 1950s and early 1960s failed to persuade this new generation of Canadian historians. The lasting reputation of each of these three national historians has been highly dependent on whether each scholars preferred interpretation aligns with the new values held by the new generation of Canadian historians. While W.L. Mortons western perspective fit in well with the regional concerns of the 1980s, and Arthur Lower retained a reputation as an early innovator of social history, Donald Creightons career has been remembered for the strident opinions of his later life, especially regarding the growth of Quebec nationalism and the increasing influence of the United States within Canadian national affairs. It is Creightons diminished reputation among English Canadian historians that is most commonly linked to the moniker of national history. As the gap between the postwar understanding of Canada and the post-Beatles vision for Canada continued to widen throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Canadian historical community, on the whole, continued to equate all national history with the reactionary reputation of an aging Donald Creighton. While this simplistic view provides convenient shorthand for the genre of national history, it fails to appreciate both the substantial contributions of national historians to Canadian historiography and the widespread influence of their work on the reading Canadian public.
