Individual Religious Affiliation, Religious Community Context and Health in Mozambique

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: This dissertation examines associations between religious affiliation, religious community context and health of women and their children in Mozambique focusing on the following issues: (1) attending prenatal consultations and delivering children in a health facility; (2) women's symptoms of STDs; and (3) under-five mortality. Estimation of random intercept Poisson regression for the outcome about attending prenatal consultations demonstrated a favorable effect of affiliation to Catholic or Mainline Protestant and Apostolic religious groups. The concentration of Zionist churches in the community had a negative influence. Random intercept logistic regression was used to estimate the relationship between religion and institutional child delivery. Affiliation to Catholic or Mainline Protestant denominations as well as concentration of Catholic or Mainline Protestant churches in the community had some beneficial effect on giving birth in health clinics. The presence of Zionist churches in the community had some negative effect and that of other groups no significant influence. Random intercept logistic regression was also employed for investigating the influence of religion on women's symptoms of STDs. Belonging to the Catholic or Mainline Protestant church had some protective effect on reporting symptoms of STDs. There was no effect of religious context, except that the concentration of Other Pentecostal churches had a positive effect on reporting symptoms of SDTs. Event-history analysis was conducted for examining relationships between maternal religious affiliation with under-five mortality. Affiliation to Catholic or Mainline Protestant churches and to Apostolic denominations increased the odds of child survival, although, the influence of having a mother belonging to Catholic or Mainline Protestant churches lost statistical significance after accounting particularly for the average level of education in the community, for the period of 5 years preceding the survey date. Taken together, the results in this dissertation show some protective effect of religion that varies primarily by denominational group to which women are affiliated. They also indicate that religious community context may have some negative effect on health of women and children. The nature of the effect of religious community context varies with the type of outcome considered and the type of religious mixture in the community. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ph.D. Social Science and Health 2011

Desterritorialização e reterritorialização das comunidades atingidas pela exploração do carvão mineral em Moatize, Moçambique

Matos, Elmer Agostinho Carlos de January 2016 (has links)
This study aimed to understand the socio-spatial transformations resulting from the introduction of the mining activity in the Moatize district, in Mozambique. For understanding these dynamics, the historical of political and economic transformations traversedby the country allowed us to understand how the international capital seized the territories of local communities. Starting from the constitutional and legislative reviews, the country opened its doors to international capital, and approved several exploration projects in mineral and energy resources with implications for the territory of local communities. Amendments or revisions have provided the necessary conditions for the introduction of neoliberal policies (first introduced in 1987 with the implementation of the Economic Rehabilitation Program), responsible for destroying the active role of the state and placed the economy in the hands of economic agents. To facilitate its implementation, revisions to the laws of Lands and Mines become senior members of the dispossession of territories of local communities to benefit mining companies. The legislation, which presented themselves as defenders of the interests of local communities, hid behind the exchange of territory by land. In the new space, guaranteed by law, they are introduced new objects, in order to (re)produce dynamic needed to build spaces of living and production. To understand this dynamic expressed in the process of Territorialization-Deterritorialization-Reterritorializatin, was chosen the Moatize district, in Tete province, rich in coal mines, where it was selected communities affected by mining projects of Vale and Rio Tinto. Using the methodology of geographical scales was possible to understand how actors located at higher scales materialize their wishes in the territories of local communities, where nearly two thousand five hundred families were directly affected by mining projects and forcibly displaced to new resettlement sites. The conditions found in the resettlement areas are hindering the inclusion of these communities, deteriorating the quality of their lives.

Reflexos de Moçambique na narrativa para crianças e jovens: um estudo da obra O homem que não podia olhar para trás / Reflections of Mozambique in the narrative for children and young people: a study of the work \"O homem que não podia olhar para trás\"

Regina Celia Ruiz 14 September 2015 (has links)
This paper aims to analyze, from the perspective of Comparative Studies, the work O homem que não podia olhar para trás from the Mozambican writer Nelson Saúte, pointing out the hybrid of the text, performed by several dialogues that are closely connected among brands of oral tradition and stylistic and aesthetic aspects of the narrative, in constant relation to Roberto Chichorro\'s paintings. This combination of languages, bringing up reminiscences left by the myth of Orpheus, refers to important aspects of the history of Mozambique.

The fisheries potential of Marcusenius pongolensis, Oreochromis mossambicus and Schilbe intermedius in Mnjoli dam, Swaziland

Khumalo, Nokuthula January 2006 (has links)
This thesis investigates aspects of the diversity, abundance and biology of the fish species inhabiting Mnjoli Dam, an irrigation dam that is located in the rural lowveld region of Swaziland. Specific objectives for this thesis were: to determine the fish species present and select three principal species based on their abundance; to investigate the relative abundance and distribution of the three selected species; and to describe key population parameters, such as growth, maturity, reproductive seasonality and mortality. The three dominant species were selected on their fisheries potential. These were Marcusenius pongolensis, Oreochromis mossambicus and Schilbe intermedius. Marcusenius pongolensis was the most abundant species in terms of both catch per unit effort and mass. Catch rates were shown to vary according to habitat type. Age and growth parameters were obtained from sectioned otoliths. Marginal zone analysis showed that annulus formation occurred in winter for all three species. The maximum-recorded ages were 8, 6 and 8 for M. pongolensis, O. mossambicus and S. intermedius, respectively. Growth for the three species was best described by the three parameter von Bertalanffy growth model as Lt = 1.88.67(1- exp⁻¹·⁴⁸⁽t⁺°·⁶⁷⁾) mm FL for M. pongolensis; Lt = 226.83(1- exp⁻°·⁴⁽t⁺²·°²⁾) mm TL for O. mossambicus and Lt = 214.59(1- exp⁻°·⁶°⁽t⁺¹·²°⁾) mm FL for S. intermedius. Sexual maturity was estimated for male and female M. pongolensis at 134 mm FL and 119 mm FL, respectively. Oreochromis mossambicus matured at 239 mm TL and S. intermedius at 205 mm FL. Two spawning peaks for M. pongolensis and S. intermedius were observed, one at the onset of summer (November) and the second at the beginning of autumn (February-March). Oreochromis mossambicus also exhibited two spawning peaks, one in spring (September) and the second in autumn (February –March). Mean mortality rate (Z), estimated using catch curve analysis was 0.77 year⁻¹ for M. pongolensis, 0.49 year⁻¹ for O. mossambicus and 0.79 year⁻¹ for S. intermedius. Natural mortality was assumed to be equal to Z since there is no fishery activity at the dam. Size specific selectivity curves were developed for each species. Of all the mesh sizes used, the 44 mm mesh size net had the highest catch rates in terms of numbers for M. pongolensis and S. intermedius. The 75mm mesh caught the highest catch rates for O. mossambicus. . The 44mm and 75 mm meshes seem to be the most suitable mesh sizes for harvesting the candidate species. It is concluded that no commercial fishery should be established on the dam, yet a small subsistence fishery could be a possible option. Management options such as input controls, open and closed seasons and areas and minimum sizes are discussed.
