A Generalized 2-D Multiport Model for Planar Circuits with Slots in Ground Plane

Khajehnasiri, Amirreza January 2005 (has links)
With increasing complexity of microwave integrated circuits and tendency towards building integrated modules, real estate in printed circuit boards becomes more at premium. On the other hand, building MIC's on a single semiconductor substrate such as GaAs has other drawbacks as substrate requirements for different components are sometimes contradictory. This has motivated researchers to consider multi-layer and stacked designs. Multi-layer planar circuits offer advantages that cannot be equaled by traditional single layer designs. In this respect, a new class of planar structures, based upon a multi-layered stack of dual-mode stripline or microstrip patches is becoming increasingly popular. In the new stacked design coupling between planar circuits separated by a ground plane is accomplished through coupling apertures in the common ground plane. <br ><br /> This thesis is about developing a new approximate multiport network model for fast analysis of multi-layered planar structures with ground plane slots. To extend applicability of multiport network model (MNM) to the class of planar structures containing ground plane slots, a generalized network formulation for aperture problems is combined with traditional MNM to account for the presence of the slot. To this end, the slot is replaced by an unknown equivalent surface magnetic current. Slot ports are defined in terms of electric and magnetic fields over the slot in accordance with the generalized network formulation for aperture problems. While traditional MNM for planar circuits is based on generalized impedance matrices, we adopt a hybrid matrix approach for multi-layer structures. The hybrid matrix consists of four sub-matrices that relate terminal voltages and currents of edge and slot ports. The same generalized impedance matrix in the absence of the slot can be used to relate terminal voltages and currents of edge ports when the slot ports are short-circuited. Open circuit voltage at edge ports due to terminal voltages at slot ports and terminal currents at slot ports due to input currents at edge ports are represented by two transfer matrices. Both these transfer matrices can be calculated from 2D analysis which only considers <em>TMz</em> modes. <br ><br /> Interaction among slot ports, represented by a generalized admittance matrix, however, requires considering both <em>TMz</em> and <em>TEz</em> modes. This generalized admittance matrix is obtained from tangential component of the magnetic field over the slot due to the equivalent surface magnetic current and relates terminal voltages and currents of slot ports. Full modal expansion consisting of both <em>TMz</em> and <em>TEz</em> modes is used to compute the generalized admittance matrix of a slot in a regularly shaped planar cavity. For irregularly shaped patches, modal expansion is not available. Instead, a new contour integral equation for magnetic field, derived for the first time in this thesis, is combined with complex images method for calculation of generalized admittance matrix of a slot radiating in a planar cavity of arbitrary shape. <br ><br /> Once the hybrid matrix representation of a planar circuit on a ground plane containing a slot is derived, it can be connected to the hybrid matrix of any other planar circuit on the other side of the ground plane. This can be done by enforcing network equivalent of continuity of tangential fields across the slot. This leads to a generalized impedance matrix for the multi-layer structure relating terminal voltages and currents of edge ports of both planar circuits. <br ><br /> To show the accuracy of the proposed method of analysis, several proof-of-concept structures have been analyzed by both this method and ANSOFT HFSS full-wave simulator as a reference. In most cases excellent agreement is achieved in predicting the return loss and radiation patterns of these multi-layer structures which proves the validity of the proposed approach for fast analysis and design of multi-layer planar structures.

The Analysis and Simulation of the Structure of the Nonlinear Optical Waveguide

Tasy, Huey- Jiuan 28 June 2001 (has links)
In this paper¡Awe use both beam propagation method and BPM_CAD to analysis the characteristics of nonlinear optical waveguide structures. The refractive index of optical waveguide medium changes with field intensity called nonlinear optical waveguide. We use Mode Theory to solve three layers optical waveguide. There are nonlinear cladding, substrate layers and linear film. Not only find the disperson relation curve, but also observe the affections of the input power to field distribution. With the help of this, we propose a general math method to analysis symmetric muti-layer optical waveguide with periodic index that both cladding and substrate are nonlinear. According to the nonlinear dispersion relation we consider both the affections of the input power to refractive index in the film and space soliton at nonlinear interface. We propose a optical coupler and feed-back optical switch. And also, we analysis 2¡Ñ3 branches optical waveguides by changing their media to nonlinear media. According to the result, we find that they have both logic function and optical switch.

The Analysis, Simulations, and Applications of the Structure of the Nonlinear Waveguide

Lin, Jyh-Shiuan 10 July 2002 (has links)
In this paper, we used the beam propagation method to analyze the characteristics of nonlinear optical waveguides. Refractive indexes of media in planar optical waveguides are changed with the electric field intensity called nonlinear planar optical waveguides. We use the modal theory to solve the three-layer planar optical waveguide with the guiding film is nonlinear. We not only obtained dispersion relation curves, but also observed the affections of the input power to field distributions. By the basic theory of this, we proposed a novel method to analyze multi-layer planar optical waveguides with nonlinear or localized nonlinear guiding films.By the theory and novel method we pointed out, on the other hand, we proposed an all-optical switch and analyze the all-optical device by the beam propagation method.

Construction of static and dynamic multi-layer petrophysical models in Camisea gas reservoirs, Peru

Gandhi, Ankur 03 January 2011 (has links)
Estimation of static and dynamic petrophysical properties of multi-layer hydrocarbon reservoirs is crucial for the assessment of storage and flow capacities, compartmentalization, and for best primary or enhanced recovery practices. Interactive numerical simulation to reproduce field logs and core data is a reliable procedure to estimate static and dynamic petrophysical properties of complex rock formations. Previously, Voss et al. (2009) introduced the concept of Common Stratigraphic Framework (CSF) to construct and cross-validate multi-layer static/dynamic petrophysical models by invoking the interactive, numerical simulation of well logs both before and after invasion. This thesis documents the successful implementation of the CSF concept to examine and quantify the effects of mud-filtrate invasion on apparent resistivity, nuclear, and magnetic resonance logs acquired in San Martin, Cashiriari and Pagoreni gas fields in Camisea, Peru. Conventional petrophysical interpretation methods yield abnormally high estimates of water saturation in some of the reservoir units that produce gas with null water influx. This anomalous behavior is due to relatively low values of deep apparent electrical resistivity, and has otherwise been attributed to the presence of clay-coating grains and/or electrically conductive grain minerals. On the other hand, electrical resistivity logs exhibit substantial invasion effects as evidenced by the separation of apparent resistivity logs (both LWD and wireline) with multiple radial lengths of investigation. In extreme cases, apparent resistivity logs “stack” because of very deep invasion. We diagnose and quantify invasion effects on resistivity and nuclear logs with interactive numerical modeling before and after invasion. The assimilation of such effects in the interpretation consistently decreases previous estimates of water saturation to those of irreducible water saturation inferred from core data. It is shown that capillary pressure effects are responsible for the difference in separation of resistivity curves in some of the reservoir units. The final multi-layer CSF is in agreement with gas production measurements and permits reliable flow predictions to assist in reservoir engineering and production studies. / text

Mesoscopic superconductivity : quasiclassical approach

Ožana, Marek January 2001 (has links)
This Thesis is concerned with the quasiclassical theory of meso-scopic superconductivity. The aim of the Thesis is to introduce the boundary conditions for a quasiclassical Green’s function on partially transparent interfaces in mesoscopic superconducting structures and to analyze the range of applicability of the quasiclassical theory. The linear boundary conditions for Andreev amplitudes, factoring the quasiclassical Green’s function, are presented.  The quasiclassical theory on classical trajectories is reviewed and then generalized to include knots with paths intersections.  The main focus of the Thesis is on the range of validity of the quasiclassical theory. This goal is achieved by comparison of quasiclassical and exact Green’s functions.  The exact Gor’kov Greens function cannot be directly used for the comparison because of its strong microscopic variations on the length-scale of λF. It is the coarse-grain averaged exact Green’s function which is appropriate for the comparison. In most of the typical cases the calculations show very good agreement between both theories. Only for certain special situations, where the classical trajectory contains loops, one encounters discrepancies. The numerical and analytical analysis of the role of the loop-like structures and their influence on discrepancies between both exact and quasiclassical approaches is one of the main results of the Thesis. It is shown that the terms missing in the quasiclassical theory can be attributed to the loops formed by the interfering paths.  In typical real samples any imperfection on the scale larger than the Fermi wavelength disconnects the loops and the path is transformed into the tree-like graph. It is concluded that the quasiclassical theory is fully applicable in most of real mesoscopic samples. In the situations where the conventional quasiclassical theory is inapplicable due to contribution of the interfering path, one can use the modification of the quasiclassical technique suggested in the Thesis.

Vision Based Obstacle Detection And Avoidance Using Low Level Image Features

Senlet, Turgay 01 April 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study proposes a new method for obstacle detection and avoidance using low-level MPEG-7 visual descriptors. The method includes training a neural network with a subset of MPEG-7 visual descriptors extracted from outdoor scenes. The trained neural network is then used to estimate the obstacle presence in real outdoor videos and to perform obstacle avoidance. In our proposed method, obstacle avoidance solely depends on the estimated obstacle presence data. In this study, backpropagation algorithm on multi-layer perceptron neural network is utilized as a feature learning method. MPEG-7 visual descriptors are used to describe basic features of the given scene image and by further processing these features, input data for the neural network is obtained. The learning/training phase is carried out on specially constructed synthetic video sequence with known obstacles. Validation and tests of the algorithms are performed on actual outdoor videos. Tests on indoor videos are also performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithms in indoor scenes. Throughout the study, OdBot 2 robot platform, which has been developed by the author, is used as reference platform. For final testing of the obstacle detection and avoidance algorithms, simulation environment is used. From the simulation results and tests performed on video sequences, it can be concluded that the proposed obstacle detection and avoidance methods are robust against visual changes in the environment that are common to most of the outdoor videos. Findings concerning the used methods are presented and discussed as an outcome of this study.
