A Service Virtualization Architecture for Efficient Multimedia DeliveryKorotich, Elena 20 December 2012 (has links)
This thesis provides a novel architecture for the creation and management of virtual multimedia adaptation services offered by a multimedia-enabled cloud. The aim of the proposed scheme is to provide an optimal yet a transparent user access to adapted media contents while isolating them from the heterogeneity of the utilized devices, diversity of media formats, as well as the details of the adaptation services and performance variations of the underlying network. This goal is achieved through the development of service virtualization models that provide various levels of abstraction of the actual physical services and their performance parameters. Such virtual models offer adaptation functions by comprising adaptation services with accordance to their parameters. Additionally, parameters describing the functional specifics of the adaptation functions, as well as multimedia content features, are organized into a hierarchical structure that facilitates extraction of the virtual models capable of satisfying the conditions expressed by the user requests. At the same time the paramter/feature organization structure itself is flexible enough to allow users to specify media delivery requests at various levels of request details (e.g., summarize video vs. drop specific frames). As a result, in response to a user request for a multimedia content, an optimal virtual service adaptation path is calculated, describing the needed media adaptation operations as well as the appropriate mapping to the physical resources capable of executing such functions. The selection of the adaptation path is done with the use of a novel performance-history based selection mechanism that takes into account the performance variations and relations of the services in a dynamically changing environment of multimedia clouds. A number of experiments are conducted to demonstrate the potential of the proposed work in terms of the enhanced processing time and service quality.

EFFECTS OF SPEAKER'S ACCENT IN A MULTIMEDIA TUTORIAL ON NON-NATIVE STUDENTS' LEARNING AND ATTITUDESCao Ngoc, Lam Vien 01 May 2014 (has links)
Research in the field of multimedia has yielded principles for the design of effective multimedia instructional messages including Mayer's principles regarding voice. According to the voice principle, students learn more deeply when the narration in a multimedia lesson is spoken by a native voice rather than a non-native voice. The generalizability of the voice principle has been demonstrated when applied to multimedia users who are native speakers of the language used in narration. However, three out of four English users are non-native speakers of English, and the vast majority of verbal exchanges in English do not involve any native speakers of the language at all. By focusing on non-native users, the results of this study should clarify the applicability of the voice principle to a broader target audience. The study investigated whether the accent of the narrator in a multimedia tutorial affected participants' learning and attitudes toward the narrator. The independent variable of the study was narrator's accent with two levels: native accent and non-native shared accent. The dependent variables of the study were participants' learning and their attitudes toward the narrators. Sixty-five Chinese participants at a Midwestern university in the United States were randomly assigned to one of two groups in this experimental design. Data to test the dependent variables were collected through a learning achievement test and an attitude survey. Data analyses revealed that there was no significant difference in overall learning and recall level learning between the two accent groups. However, the group who heard the narration spoken with the native American English accent had significantly more positive attitudes toward their respective narrator than the group who heard the narration spoken with a non-native shared Chinese accent. The study qualifies the voice principle by establishing the limits of its generalizability to non-native English speakers. The study suggests to instructional designers that the use of a non-native shared accent should not affect students' learning negatively although it may affect their attitudes toward the speakers. In addition, the study helps assure non-native instructors that they can record their own voices to use in multimedia instruction as their non-native students will learn as effectively as with a native English accent.

The term 'effective' is used because multimedia transmission is a nightmare if the conveyance is not smooth, seamless and efficient. Over time, the world has seen tremendous improvement that started from the era of the first generation of multimedia generation to the point of multimedia transmission. Much has been said and done in this area and the world has become a connected enterprise because of the transmission of multimedia.
In spite of these successes that have been recorded in these areas, there are still many challenges facing multimedia transmission. What determines the progress of technology globally is the trends of evolution that multimedia transmission has gone through. An important challenge facing multimedia transmission is one that has been neglected for a long time. There has been deep neglect of the devices that are used in transmission while much emphasis has been on the protocols and the software that are being developed for multimedia transmission. Devices play a very important role in the realization of seamless transmission of media.
Lately, the world seems to have realized the fact that devices that do the actual transmission needs more attention. These devices are the ones that do the distribution and the transmission of the multimedia streams or signals. This has been highlighted in a recent research study that was referenced in the Cambridge Handbook of Multimedia Learning that showed that the expectations of meeting the world's target on multimedia has been reduced by half because of problems arising from the inefficiency of multimedia devices and not really from the protocol perspective as earlier perceived.
It is inline with the above that this research was titled "improving multimedia transmission through enhanced multimedia devices". Generative Multimedia (GM) applications are an increasingly popular way to
implement interactive media performances.
Our contributions include creating a metric for evaluating Generative
Multimedia performances, designing a model for accepting perceiver
preferences, and using those preferences to adapt GM performances.
The metric used is imprecision, which is the ratio of the
actual computation time of a GM element to the computation time of a
complete version of that GM element.
By taking a perceiver's
preferences into account when making adaptation decisions, applications
can produce
GM performances that meet soft real-time
and resource constraints while allocating imprecision to the GM elements
the perceiver least cares about.
Compared to other approaches, perceiver-directed imprecision best allocates
impreciseness while minimizing delay.

Syftet med denna studie har varit att undersöka om studenter som går första året på en teknisk högskola upplever att närvaron eller frånvaron av bilder i undervisning av ett naturvetenskapligt ämne påverkar deras förståelse för ämnet och hur väl de minns ämnet som studeras. Genom semi-strukturerade kvalitativa intervjuer fick sju studenter berätta om sina erfarenheter från grundläggande kemi- och fysikkurser på högskolan och om erfarenheter av bilder i andra studier. Studiens resultat har analyserats enligt en fenomenografisk analysmodell där uttalanden jämfördes och grupperades genom likheter och olikheter som resulterade i de tre kategorierna; Multimedia - effekt på lärandet, Bildens inverkan för förståelse, Bildens inverkan för att minnas. Studien visar att studenterna upplever att bilder som används enligt tidigare forskning kring multimedia-effekten och kognitiv belastningsteori påverkar lärandet positivt både kortsiktigt och över längre tid. Det vill säga att den djupare förståelsen ökar när konkreta instruktiva bilder används tillsammans med text eller tal, och att mer generella bilder som övergripande visar ett naturvetenskapligt fenomen tillsammans med text eller tal ökar motivationen för lärande. Motivationen har i sin tur uppmuntrat till att studenten tänker vidare kring ämnet som lärs ut. När instruktionerna är designade för att optimera hur arbetsminnet påverkas enligt kognitiv belastningsteori upplever studenterna störst positiv inverkan på sitt lärande.

Spirited Possessions| Media and Intellectual Property in the American Spiritual MarketplaceVentimiglia, Andrew 19 March 2016 (has links)
<p> This dissertation explores the role that intellectual property law plays as it influences the circulation and use of religious goods in contemporary religious organizations in the United States. The coherence of many modern spiritual communities no longer lies in a centralized institution like the church but instead in a shared dedication to sacred texts and other religious media. Thus, intellectual property law has become an effective means to administer the ephemeral beliefs and practices mediated by these texts. I explore a number of cases to demonstrate how intellectual property law can be used to maintain and adjudicate social relations rather than simply determining the proper allocation of ownership over a contested good. This project uses a number of select case studies – the legal battles of the Urantia Foundation and Worldwide Church of God, Scientology’s lawsuits against Internet Service Providers, the practice of sermon-stealing as it relates to the growth of sermon databases – to examine how religious communities ethically justify forms of ownership in religious goods and to highlight the incongruities between theories of authorship, originality and ownership within spiritual communities and those embedded in the law. I conclude that religious property owners construct innovative strategies for knowledge production and distribution as they mobilize IP to organize social and spiritual communities, care for and protect sacred goods, produce new articulations of spiritual identity, and even use the prohibitions of law to enchant material forms. </p>
