Migration, Identity, and the Spatiality of Social Interaction in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman

Kessell, Nicole 10 April 2018 (has links)
Utilizing Henri Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space as a framework for exploration, this research is concerned with the social and cultural impacts of modernization and international migration to Muscat, Oman focusing on the production of space and its role in the modification and (re)construction of culture and identity in the everyday. While the Omani state is promoting a unifying national identity, Muscat residents are reconstructing and renegotiating culture and identity in the capital city. Individuals are adapting and conforming to, mediating, and contesting both the state’s identity project as well as to the equally, if not more, influential social control that is the culture of gossip and reputation. What’s emerging is a distinctly Muscati culture.

Step IV of the muon ionization cooling experiment (MICE) and the multiple scattering of muons

Carlisle, Timothy January 2013 (has links)
The Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE) is the first technical demonstration of muon ionization cooling, using a prototype section of a Neutrino Factory cooling channel. MICE is currently under construction at the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory in the UK and will make the first cooling measurements in 2015, in Step IV of the experimental programme. Cooling predictions in Monte Carlo simulations of Step IV were found to disagree with the predictions of the 'cooling formula', a widely-used approximation, by up to 30% in liquid hydrogen (LH2). This disagreement was shown to originate, largely, from the multiple scattering expression used in the cooling formula. It was necessary to go back to the fundamental physics of scattering to derive a more accurate expression that includes scattering from atomic electrons. A modified form of the cooling formula was derived using this expression and gave better agreement with the Monte Carlo in LH2. Predictions are given for the equilibrium emittance, using the new expression, for seven low Z materials at muon momenta of 140, 200 and 240 MeV/c. Theories which predict the distribution of multiple scattering angles are briefly reviewed, focusing on Moliere theory and its variants, which are the most widely-used theories. The distributions predicted by these theories are used in most Monte Carlo codes but their implementation is not transparent, especially regarding the treatment of scatters with atomic electrons, which are important in low Z materials. A simple Monte Carlo model to predict multiple scattering distributions was developed that correctly treats scatters off electrons. The model gives very good agreement with measurements by the MuScat Experiment. Investigations were made into the possibility of measuring multiple scattering in MICE Step IV, both with and without the magnetic field. Preliminary results suggest that measurements are easier with no magnetic field, where tracks are straight. Corrections to account for the resolution of the scintillating-fibre trackers are required in both cases, but these are substantially smaller when straight tracks are used.

Exploration and categorization of pre-service physics teachers' alternative conceptions in superconductivity and nanotechnology

Ojal, Oyier John 15 November 2019 (has links)
An exploratory case study research design was followed to explore and categorize 23 pre-service physics teachers’ understanding in the fields of superconductivity and nanotechnology at the Sultan Qaboos University in Oman. To elicit their responses, a five-stage categorical framework analysis was used. The five stages included identification of the thematic framework, familiarization, coding, placing the categories on a chart and finally, interpretation. A conceptual survey test (Conceptual Survey of Superconductivity and Nanotechnology) was administered to the pre-service physics teachers to form four independently homogenous ability focus groups. This was followed by focus group discussions whose data were analyzed to group their conceptions in both the epistemological as well as ontological categories. From the focus group discussions, six categories were considered from previous studies, namely; lateral alternative conceptions, ontological conceptions, naïve physics, Ohm’s p-primes, mixed conceptions and loose ideas. Since this was a pre-instructional study, naïve physics ideas and lateral alternative conceptions were dominant. Naïve physics refers to the untrained student or human perception of various physical phenomena while lateral alternative conception refers the misconceptions individuals have on ideas that may be inconsistent with scientifically acceptable facts. Findings indicate that the pre-service teachers’ conceptions deviated from canonical scientific concepts, are diversified and inconsistent. The knowledge on pre-instructional conceptions will influence the development of evidence-based pedagogy, which is fundamental to the development of an effective physics education curriculum. / This study aimed to evaluate the influence of the plastic cover film of low density polyethylene (LDPE), 160 mm thick, transparent and width of 3 m, the microclimatic conditions of the vineyards covered in the region Submédio São Francisco - RSMSF, productivity and economic profitability of viticulture table in the region. The research consisted of four experimental stages conducted in vineyards production of table grape varieties Festival and Italy Muscat in Petrolina, Pernambuco (09 ° 06 '14''S, 40 º 29' 52 "W, altitude 360 m) during October 2009 to November 2010. The coverage period occurred only during the ripening and harvesting of the grapes, as traditionally used by local farmers. Was studied three treatments: treatment 1 - no plastic cover canopy (SCob), treatment 2 - plastic cover positioned 50 cm above the canopy (CP50) and treatment 3 - plastic cover positioned 100 cm above the canopy (CP100). Each research plot consisted of seven consecutive useful plants and a row of planting. The microclimatic monitoring was performed by temperature sensors and relative humidity, wind speed and radiative flows, installed in three locations: beneath the canopy at the time of the clusters between the canopy and the plastic cover over the cover and the atmosphere. The sensors were connected to automatic data acquisition CR23X and CR1000, programmed to perform readings every 2 seconds to generate hourly and daily averages and extreme values daily. The results indicated that the plastic cover positioned at 50 cm and 100 cm above the canopy changed the microclimate of the vineyard, increasing the air temperature and relative humidity and reducing wind speed and reducing up to 40% availability of radiation inside. The transmissivity of the plastic cover allowed the passage of 67% of global radiation (Rg), 55% of the ultraviolet (UV), 58% of photosynthetic active radiation (PAR), and 76% of infrared radiation (IR). Between April and May, time of year that occur in the region increased cloudiness and air temperature more gently, the plastic has changed the microclimate of the interior of Italy Muscat grape vineyards, with up to 2 ° C in air temperature , increased relative humidity in relation to the external environment (with the main difference being observed in the canopy CP50, a significant reduction in wind speed, especially on the canopy, and the amount of defect clusters with CP50 in the canopy compared to canopies Scob and CP100. During September and October the physical productivity under the canopy was positively influenced and contributed to a greater availability of radiation when compared to canopy cover CP50. The increased business productivity, whether by reducing the quantity of clusters with defects observed during the April and May in the canopy CP50 or by increased availability of light in September and October period in canopy CP100, was decisive to positive economic return of the activity, making the benefit / cost ratio remained always greater than 1 widening of the margin of safety activity.

Marcon, Ângela Rossi 18 June 1925 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior, CAPES / Farroupilha, located in the Serra Gaúcha region, is the county that owns the third largest production of grapes for processing in Brazil and the largest producer of muscat grapes, representing almost a half part of Brazilian production. In the last ten years, the production and commercialization of sparkling wines muscat in Brazil increased significantly, demonstrating a growing annual consumption. This product pleases the palate of the Brazilian and also of consumers from other countries, because every year sparkling Brazilian muscat win several medals in international competitions. Another important aspect was the achievement in 2015, of the Geographical Indication of Origin of wines from Farroupilha, contributing even more to the highlight of these products in the Brazilian and abroad market. Among the main varieties cultivated and used for the elaboration of quiet wines and sparkling wine muscat are Moscato Branco, Moscato Giallo, Moscato R2 and Malvasia de Candia. The more detailed knowledge of the sensorial, aromatic and qualitative characteristics of these products are important as they allow to characterize the profile of the wines and sparkling wines of this region. Therefore, the objective of this work was to determine the aromatic composition of the sparkling Farroupilha muscat; their evolution during storage; characterize wines elaborated with moscato varieties and determine the influence of yeasts Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Torulaspora delbrueckii on the chemical and sensorial composition of Moscato Branco wines. Physicochemical, chromatographic and sensorial analyzes were performed. The results allow to attribute to the sparkling wines with less time of storage citrus and fruity aromas and to the sparkling ones with more time, notes of apple, truffles, almonds, roses and honey. Each grape variety provides different aromas for each sparkling wines, contributing to a higher aromatic complexity. The Moscato Giallo variety attributes to the wine aromas that refer to fruits such as pear and pitanga, and herbs such as rosemary. The wines of the variety Moscato R2 stood out for the notes of citrus fruits and rosemary, and the wines of the variety Moscato Branco presented citric notes, pear and pitanga. The yeasts used also influenced the aromatic composition. The wines elaborated with pure yeasts of T. delbrueckii presented higher levels of isoamyl acetate (banana), ethyl hexanoate (fruits, anise), 2-methyl-1-propanol (alcoholic) and 2-phenylethanol (roses). These concentrations tend to decrease in mixed fermentations. Wines produced with S. cerevisiae 100% EC 1118 showed the highest levels of ethanal (green apple), 1-propanol (pungent), ethyl octanoate (pineapple, pear) and linalool (roses). Thus, this study demonstrates that, although the consuption tendency of muscat wine and muscat sparkling wine being between 12 and 18 months, these products have the potential to be consumed with greater storage time, without losing their typical characteristics. It was also verified that the sparkling wines of Farroupilha presented similar quality to the sparkling wine produced in the region of Asti, region of Denomination of Origin traditionally known with almost one hundred years of wine history.
