ARCANA

Horn, Tyler Joseph 01 May 2022 (has links)
Arcana is a series of interactive sound sculptures. Relying heavily on found and repurposed materials gathered in the Southern Illinois region, I will highlight the properties of objects associated with modes of performance. Natural materials, salvaged instruments, and sports equipment will be used to harness the tonal qualities of these found and assembled objects. This project was inspired by the writings and works of Harry Partch, Carl G. Jung, Benjamin Patterson, Robert Raucschenberg, Matthew Barney, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Timothy Morton.

The Management Consultant: The Hermes of our time

Fouweather, Ian January 2017 (has links)
No / Our need for certainty in an uncertain world is not new, but the narratives we choose have to resonate with the times we imagine. In the 21st century, management discourses focus on rapid technological and societal changes to highlight a radically open future that is fundamentally different from the past. Where once oracles used the exploits of Zeus, Apollo and Dionysus to dispense wisdom and provide direction in our collective struggle for survival, we now look elsewhere. With the rise of scientific management in the early 20th century, it has been to Management Consultants that the corporate world and public institutions have looked towards to provide the certainty they require. Not surprisingly with its rise, commentators and critics have sought to understand the nature of the industry and why it has become such a significant part of the business environment. Paradoxically, despite over twenty five years of writing, and many authoritative voices the nature of the industry remains rather vague (Harvey et al. 2016). To shed light on why this might be, this paper draws on Greek mythology, focussing on the god Hermes; the fleet footed traveller who like an ancient consultant was despatched from the heavens to bring messages and wisdom to mortals on Earth.

A Study of Plato’s Use of Myths and its Relation to Philosophy and Moral Education

Nakazawa, Yoshiaki January 2015 (has links)
The way in which Plato’s uses of myth relate to his theory of moral education and his conception of philosophy is examined. Plato’s use and conception of myth (muthos) is notoriously difficult to determine, however, especially because it is difficult to determine whether and in what way Plato wishes to contrast muthos with logos. I argue that muthos plays an integral role in Plato’s philosophical investigation and dialectic, and therefore it is best understood as a “guise” of logos. Myth is not a suspension nor transcendence of logos, as scholars have suggested. Plato uses myth when he is concerned with moral education, that is, the moral transformation of the reader and the interlocutor. According to this line of interpretation, Plato’s myths play a heuristic role in service of his moral pedagogical goals. I outline Plato’s pedagogical goals in the context of his theory of moral education, and conclude with some suggestions about the integration of philosophical myths in educational settings today.
